MAHALIA: I didn’t want to be born. Something went wrong along the way, and I’ve been unsure about my purpose on this earth ever since. If I was hit by a car, if I fell off a cliff, would anyone care? Living in Cornucopia with my sister wives under the watchful eye of our husband, Allred Lee Chiles, has turned me into a robot, unable to feel or think for myself. I’ve been looking through a cloudy glass, not trusting myself or others.
But a man came down from the mountains. I’m captivated by Gideon Fortunati, his name expressing all that he is—keeper of my fate, master of reality, teacher of my future. Gideon’s purifying power has enlightened me about my capabilities. I don’t have to let The Prophet take my daughter and marry her off to that old man. I was guilty of dirt and sin, but I can take my life back now.
GIDEON: I was exiled to this godforsaken wasteland in Utah by our MC Prez. My entire existence has been a struggle, a futile tirade against my maker. I ranted against my fate, and in answer I was sent Mahalia. A naive victim of that twisted false Mormon sect leader. He’s tried to mangle her like a spineless puppet, like he has all the other women—the other girls.
Before I met her, I was a child. Now I’ve given up childish ways, and I can see everything in a mirror, face to face. Faith, hope, and love were all handed to me, and the greatest of these is love. I’ve come too far. There’s no surrender now.
It didn't look that far on the map.
Publisher’s Note: This is a full-length, standalone novel with a HEA and no cliffhanger. Possible triggers include underage arranged marriage, forced oral copulation, and male prostitution.
Bestselling author Layla Wolfe likes to bring you alpha males--sometimes two at a time--and the kick-ass women who love them. Her BARE BONES MC series explores the dark, disturbing life of the biker club in Arizona. Her spinoff series THE BENT ZEALOTS MC is a gritty MM saga. THE ASSASSINS OF YOUTH MC is a spinoff set in Utah. For a FREE COPY of THE BARE BONES #1, sign up for her newsletter at: http://www.subscribepage.com/d3s7p6
Through A Glass, Darkly is the first in the new Assassins of Youth MC series , and boy does Layla Wolfe come out will guns blazing in this book. She's taken her signature smart and sexy, womanizing biker and paired him with a naïve yet willful beauty.
Gideon is an outlaw, a rebel, and he makes no bones about it. Mahalia is the dutiful, yet miserable, 40th wife of the prophet Allred Lee Chiles. As the head of the Church of Good Fortune, a fundamentalist Mormon sect, Chiles leads with a iron fist and twisted sense of morality. While Gideon has been accused of ruining women, never has he taken away their freedom, their free will. Seeing the abuses being heaped upon the women and children of Cornucopia he can not turn a blind eye to their plight. As his desire for Mahalia grows, so does his desire to the prophet fall from grace.
I have read several books in The Bare Bones and Bent Zealots series and I have become a real fan of Ms. Wolfe's writing style. This book is no exception. The way she incorporates the often difficult subject of religion into an erotic MC story is perfection. Each page I read kept me wanting more. I had to know what happened next? Where would this wild ride on Gideon's pussy pad take me?
Follow Gideon and Mahalia on their journey Through a Glass and discover the twists and turns that have made this my new favorite book by Layla Wolfe. I look forward to the next in the series and would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well written stories with an adventurous and sexy theme. I happily rate this book 5 Stars!!
**I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I will also be preordering a copy to keep in my collection.
Through the Glass: Darkly is 220 pages per Goodreads and I read this book in less than a day. I love that Layla Wolfe does know how to tell a good story and she writes her series as full-length, standalone novels that have a HEA and no cliffhangers!
Layla you had me laughing at “meat whistle”. I also tried looking up words in this story like Morbot (I think it is a cross between Mormon & Robot, like a Stepford Wife) & zbini - a Navajo word for black. (Mahalia is part black) I am still not certain whether these are made up words or not.
This is Gideon Fortunati and Mahalia story. Mahalia is Allred Lee Chiles “spiritual wife in the new and everlasting covenant of marriage.” Allred Lee Chiles is an evil man. He is the leader of a Mormon Sect and he has many wives.
Now I am going to let you read the synopsis for yourself no need for me to reiterate what Layla has given you about this story. But, this is another book that I love by Layla Wolfe. I had to finish the book with only a few breaks in between reading.
I do have to give you one quote from Through a Glass, Darkly that really caught me. Gideon is talking to Mahalia. “I want you to know that heaven is my mouth, eternal paradise is my c*ck, and everything to do with me is sheer rapture. OMG, I loved this part of the book. I can’t tell you more because you need to read this book.
If you have read any of Layla’s other books you will know about the Bent Zealots so this is roughly a spinoff from that MC series.
“Publisher’s Note: This is a full-length, standalone novel with a HEA and no cliffhanger. Possible triggers include underage arranged marriage, forced oral copulation, and male prostitution.”
I was gifted a copy of Through A Glass, Darkly for an honest review and I give it 5 Stars. I love Layla Wolfe's Books!
"I’ve been looking through a cloudy glass, not trusting myself or others." This pretty much sums up the internal dialogue and intense emotions felt by both Gideon and Mahalia in this first book of Layla Wolfe's new biker series. Sent to Utah as a punishment by his club's Prez for messing with the wrong woman has left Gideon feeling out of sorts, angry and looking to just "serve his time" in the desert and get the job done he was sent to do ...trade arms to a psycho rebel Mormon polygamist Allred Lee Chiles. I have read a couple of biker/polygamist books before and although there were some similar issues (young girls being forced into marriage to older men, exiling boys from the cult) this one had some unique twists and a compelling story of a woman who was not born into the lifestyle but rather forced to be there with her daughter. As with Wolfe's other books, the dialogue is brash, down-to-earth and the sex is steamy erotic and raunchy (although this one was more story driven and less about gratuitous sex) but with a passionate romance underneath the ugly. The descriptions of the landscape and beauty of the surrounding nature is a complete opposite to the brutality that lives inside of Chiles' compound and the black heart of this monster is a contrast to the light, sweetness of Mahalia as she tries to be strong for her daughter in hopes she can one day escape. Gideon is a hard on the exterior, soft on the inside hero who tries to save more than himself when he is faced with adversity coming from all directions. A wonderfully exciting start to a new biker series and many of the characters we are introduced to will hopefully play larger roles in the next book. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
***** 5 ***** "enlightened by a powerful purity" stars
Will blow your mind. Starting this whole new series with a bang. This has a very touchy subject with some people, polygamy. In my opinion, to me its a stupid made up bull pucky that men desided to have a lot of woman at their disposable. This story will get into the dark parts of this and bring out the abuse towards the woman and the children, that the men think they are all mighty in their holy power.
Mahalia is been in the Mormon religion all her life (I can relate since I am/was in the religion) but she was married to one man. Field, her first husband but he was 'accidentally killed', then she was kidnapped and made the 40th wife, yes the big 40, to a looney balooney 'Prophet' and his crap words of his holy power to tun him into a god at the time of his death or some crap. But all that changes when Mahalia sets her sights of a very sexy stub of a biker, Gideon.
Gideon is in exile for hooking up with his Prez's old lady, but to make matters work he is traveling to a polgy's compound to deal weapons with them but his traveling buddy is non other then Brickiron. He to is in exile for his rape on Ormond Tangier. Gideon had a hard life and we get to read up on his troubling childhood and how he met up with the Assassins and turned his life around. Well until he sees the African Latin beauty and his dreaded exile will turn into a time that he wont forget.
My Review of Through a glass Darkly by Layla Wolfe My Rating 5 Fortunati Stars!
Once again, I’m drawn into the reading world only Layla can write. This story is different from what she has written before, yet not disappointing at all this book captivates you as the reader and tells you a story unlike you were prepared to read….It’s so much better. Gideon and Mahalia are intense, we are given a glimpse into a world with sister wives and punishments, a leader who is truly sadist, there is pain and sadness and not your typical polygamist story but there is absolutely nothing typical about this book. The writing and dialogue is phenomenal it’s brash, and raunchy but you can’t put it down, such an intriquing story, where we see courage and strength. Can’t wait for more!! *Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review* **Reviewed for Hellmouth’s Bookblog & Reviews**
I thought this was a MC book like no other. We see inside the life of one brutal man with many sister wives. Taken against her will, Mahalia and her daughter are living the life of sadness and pain. As the 40th wife to the groups leader life is filled with nothing but heartache. When Gideon, a Sexy biker on the outs with his club's president comes to town, hope shines for both. Is it possible to have the life they want? With evil all around, I thought this was a great story of courage and strength. Unlike any other MC story I have ever read, I enjoyed the uniqueness of the story line. The connection between Mahalia and Gideon was sweet. Question is, can it stand the test they both must face to get to a HEA? I enjoyed finding out.

Through A Glass, Darkly (The Assassins of Youth MC #1) was another great MC read. Layla has done it again with a great series this one was so good. I enjoyed the characters and how the story was played out for the characters. This book is filled with twists and turns that will keep you flipping the pages until the very end of the book. Loved Gideon and Mahila and how they ended up together. Gideon is sent to Utah for punishment and start a new chapter of Assassins of Youth MC. There he meets Mahila one of the wives by the current president of the MC. Things were hot and steamy in this book I loved every minute of it. I highly recommend this book! Can't wait to see what happens next.
I never understood the world of polygamy. I don't get how a women like Mahalia and the other women can believe this "religion" . How it allows men to abuse them , and marry them off like cattle. Thank god Mahalia didn't and stood up for her and her daughter Vonda . Thank god for a man like Gideon who rescue ,loved , and saved her and her daughter and many others. I hate men like Allred leader of prophecy a-hole.
This was different, not what I was expecting. Loved Gideon, hot hot hot. Mahila, hope she can find the peace she needs. Gideon knew deep down he couldn't just walk away from her or what was happening. Alot of ups and downs, this story keeps you on your toes... can't wait to see where she takes us next fantastic!!!!!
I'm always a little scared when starting a new series but Layla Wolfe didn't disappoint. She started her new series off with a BANG!! This was different from all of the other MC books that I have read with incorporating the "religious" aspect. Great story with amazing characters.

Through A Glass, Darkly (The Assassins of Youth MC #1) by Layla Wolfe 5 out of 5 stars I was given this book for an honest review….. This was a different kind of biker/MC book then Layla’s others. I loved it!!! The twists and turns. I always jump on the chance when Layla comes out a new book and this one didn't disappoint. Once you start reading you cannot put it down. I love the characters and the story. Follow Gideon and Mahalia on their journey Through a Glass and discover the twists and turns in their story. Gideon is an exiled outlaw, he’s a rebel, and he makes no bones about it. Mahalia is the dutiful, yet miserable, 40th wife of the Prophet Allred Lee Chiles who is the head of the Church of Good Fortune, a fundamentalist Mormon sect, he leads with an iron fist and twisted sense of morality. I can see everything clearly now Faith, hope, and love were all handed to me, and the greatest of these is love. I’ve come too far. There’s no turning back now.
I cant wait to see what my favorite author Layla Wolf has in-stored for us in her next book!!!! Such a great read!!

The first in a new MC series, The Assassins of Youth MC and opens the world to a unique setting for an MC read, in a Mormon sect. This was a new one on me!
Gideon Fortunati, is sent to Utah, by the MC Pres, to set up a business deal with the sect leader, Allred Lee Chiles. It is here he sets eyes on Mahalia Warrior who also happens to be the latest of Chiles’ wives (his 40th!). Even in the drab garb she is wearing, Gideon feels an attraction to her.
Mahalia was brought into the Church of Good Fortune after her husband dies and is made one of the wives. She has a fifteen year old daughter and when Chiles orders that she be married to one of the other elders makes Mahalia take drastic action. When she hears the pipes of the bike pulling up she takes a look out the window and see the sexy biker for the first time. One look at Gideon has her secret fantasy running into overdrive.
This was an unusual read for me and I must admit some of the dialogue had me stopping and reading back a few times to try and grasp what was being said, however it was an interesting and intriguing storyline. The romance element was an almost instant love that I would have liked to have felt more passion and angst as part of the build-up.
Overall a different MC read and stands out from the usual prose. Three and a half stars.
I was graciously gifted an ARC of this book and have to admit, I liked it but didn't love it. For me, I found it a bit hard to follow at times. Some of the "wording" had me stop at times to re-read because I would get confused with what was being said. There was a lot to grasp. I want the meat and potatoes of a story and sometimes the other stuff overshadowed the main storyline for me.
The romance was almost like an instant love that I am not a huge fan of sometimes and for me it needs to be done just right, in this case I would have liked to have felt much more passion between them and also add in some angst as part of the build-up too.
The cover of this book was FANTASTIC and because I am such a visual person, the description of the female lead turned me off a bit. I had to just keep imagining the book cover. I know it sounds crazy but I am a picky reader and the visuals of my lead characters are VERY, VERY important for me call me vain, call me superficial, I don't care, lololol but that's just how I am when it comes to my characters and hell reading is my escape into my own make believe bubble for a little while, hehehe.
All in all, it was good. I do look forward to giving the next book in the series a go for sure:)
First let me say this is not for everyone! I would consider it a dark romance. I love dark romances so I was excited to read this book. It the dark and mixed in the MC life an mixed it up. I will say this is very original sometimes when you read a book you basically know what is going to happen. This was so not the case.
We find Mahalia who is in a cult/ fundamentalists polygamy group. She is the 40th wife of their so called Prophet. She has a life outside before getting caught up in her current situation. She has an independent spirt that gets her in trouble.
Then on the other hand we have Gideon who is in town as a punishment for messing around with the MC's presidents old lady. His job is to deal guns to the crazy prophet.
This is the crazy ride the two go on after meeting. Overall I really enjoyed this book their were times certain things seemed off but I will definitely read more by this author! If you are looking for an original story that is dark and exciting this is a good story!
Gideon Fortunati is almost out bad from the Assassins of Youth MC. He gets sent to Cornucopia, Utah to do a deal with certified nut job Allred Lee Chiles. In his meeting with Chiles, he also meets Mahalia Warrior, Chiles' 39th wife.
Attraction sizzles between the two of them and Mahalia is soon found in a compromising position. Mahalia has never fit into Cornucopia, having been an outsider before being forced to marry Chiles. Now, her daughter is facing the same fate. She needs out. Her daughter needs out. Gideon wants to give her that.
I'll leave it up to you to read and find out whether they get their happily ever after.
I'd thoroughly recommend this book. Like any MC book, you expect a certain amount of grittiness and Layla Wolfe delivers it without the need to go into graphic detail on some of the more horrific things going on. I was hooked early on and kept turning pages, even when it was way past my bedtime!
This is a well written read full of action and suspense and I loved reading this! This is definitely a dark read that covers some difficult subject matter, but it's handled well by this author. This is one of those books that sucks you in and doesn't let go even after you're done reading it and these are my personal favorite types of books to read. This wasn't a typical MC book and there were aspects that made it stand out from the rest of this genre and this is a good thing. The characters are intense the story is complex and overall it's a great read. I highly recommend this to anyone and I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
this is a different book then Layla's usual MC books. Gideon was sent on a run by his Prez as a punishment, but he never expected to meet a meek woman that would capture his attention, or for that woman to be one of many wives to a thug polygamist, Prophet Allred Lee Chiles. Allred is a dark, twisted, demented man! Mahalia is a good girl that was forced into becoming Allred's 40th wife. Can Gideon get his girl? Can he save the day? you must read this book to find out!!
This is the not my first rodeo with this author, I have read her Bare Bones MC books and loved them all. Ms. Wolfe is a talented author that goes outside the box and is not afraid to touch on subjects that some might shy from. This book is no exception. This particular story deals with underage arranged marriage, beatings, forced sex, male prostitution and a Prophet of the Mormon Church with his own dark vision. The story is told in alternate POV’s and the author shows readers how the two main characters lives changed after their first encounter.
Gideon was exiled to Utah by the President of the Assassins of Youth after hitting on his old lady. Gideon job’s was to help Prophet Allred run guns and set up a new chapter in that end. Gideon is your typical Biker. Loves booze and women, but he never expected that his punishment would send him right into the path of a beautiful olive skin woman, Mahalia. It was nice to see how this tough, strong and rough biker fell for this beautiful, smart and innocent woman. Right from their first encounter he had this need where he wanted to protect her, but he was confused by his feelings.
Mahalia is different from the woman in her church. She choose to stand out with her red garb Her and her daughter are both sent to the Prophet after her husband dies where she is married off to him. Mahalia is miserable with her life, but that is the only life she has known. She does what is demanded from her, right down to the beatings from her husband and the cruel and vicious sexual acts he demands. When she cross paths with Gideon she is immediately taken by this gorgeous man. She has always thought of ways to leave, but never had the courage. When her daughter Vonda is to be sealed into marriage with an older man, she knows she must run.
Things are not as they appear behind the gates. There are so many secrets that have been long buried. What I enjoyed most about this story was the development of Gideon and Mahalia’s relationship. I love how it transpired over time. The two had so much in common, their need to be safe, to belong and their love of poetry. Gideon and Mahalia discover a love neither knew could exist. There are so many twists and turns that emerge during this story, my heart was jumping at nearly every page. I cried for Mahalia and the women that suffered at the very hands of their husbands and for the children that endure such pain. Can Mahalia and Gideon get their HEA? Will the prophet let Mahalia and her daughter escape to freedom? Will all the secrets behind the Prophet and his followers come to light? If you love a MC romance read with a dark twist than this is a book for you. You are going to want to click.
Gideon Fortunati isn't happy to be in the barren landscape of Utah. Exiled from his club by the President, he is set with the task of setting up an arms trade with a local Mormon sect leader, Allred Chiles. He may well have been messing with his Presidents old lady but being sent to this back water with the club VP, who has seriously lost his marbles, is a fate worse than death… Or is it! Determined to get the job done and be in and out, he soon finds that not all is as it seems and that he may need to be the hero and not the passer-by.
Mahalia wasn't born into this life; unlike many of the other followers of the Prophet. She once had a happy and fulfilling life with a husband who she loved and her daughter, but that all seems like a distant memory. She now lives her life trying to follow the rules of her husband, Allred, being his dutiful 40th wife. That is until a mysterious biker arrives in Cornucopia. The biker makes her want to break the rules and dream about a life free from the shackles of the faith and marriage she has been forced to accept. But her biggest hope is that he will help her save her only daughter from the dreaded fate that the prophet has set out for her. He becomes her hope, her dreams and maybe her salvation.
If you have read any of Layla Wolfe’s other titles then you will know that she writes with a gritty edge and explores biker life at its darkest. This book in some respects is no different, except now she has decided to explore life within a cult as well. As with all her books, the attention to detail is so evident in the way she constructs her story, alongside the atmospheric way in which she describes the characters, the backdrop and of course the drama. She really writes beautifully.
What I particularly liked about this book was the humour that was subtly littered throughout the book. It ensures that the story doesn't get too bogged down with the darkness that you would expect by combining bikers and cults. Gideon was a great hero and he grew on me very quickly. He is a total badass biker on the outside, but he has a soft inner and a real need to be a protector and saviour; not just for Mahalia but also for Dingo. As for Mahalia, well her story is a sad one, but she comes alive when the rumble of pipes unsettles the dust in Cornucopia, as indeed it does her life.
A good start to a new series. I now look forward to seeing which direction Layla takes going forward and which characters will fight to find their HEA.
The first in a new MC series, The Assassins of Youth MC, I try and jump at the chance at reading an MC book they are one of my favorite genres. This is the first book of this authors books I have read and she did not disappoint, full of twist and turns and ride I enjoyed very much. This was one of those books I did not want to stop reading once I began it. A different kind of MC read which also makes it a good read. This book is about Gideon and Mahalia. Gideon was sent to Utah as punishment for messing around with the Prez old lady and to handle the exchange of guns with Mormon polygamist Allred Lee Chiles. He's angry and just wants to finish what he was sent to do and leave. Gideon was in trouble for screwing around so to speak with the president of the clubs old lady so he was send on a mission to deal with a gun exchange. He meets Mahalia she is one of many wifes of Allred Lee Chiles. This is where it all begins. Their story was an inserting on to read and fun to follow. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I was gifted this book for an honest review. I give this book 4.5 stars Kathy -Two Feisty Angels and A Devil blog
I really enjoyed this book. Telling the story of Gideon Fortunati who has been sent away on business, and to set up another "Assassins OF MC" chapter in Cornucopia. Although he's been sent away as punishment his dealings with Allred, leader of Cornucopia (and general headcase !!) soon become very "fortunate" for him when he meets one of his wives, Mahalia Warrior. Mahalia is definitely worthy of her surname, Warrior" as she has a hell of a battle going on. She wasn't always a member of cornucopia, she was once an "outsider" and wants that freedom again especially when she hears news about her daughter and what Allred has planned for her. This was a fairly gritty read and while the author hasn't gone into details as to what happens to Mahalia the insinuations are there so the graphic details aren't needed. It kept a steady pace throughout and was well written, i enjoyed the fact that it was done in dual pov's and did have a few laughs at times, especially at Mahalia's inability to use profanities. A great read all told.
I received a copy from the author in exchange for a honest review.
I love MC books. It is my go-to genre. Getting the chance to read Layla Wolfe's next series featuring the Assassins of Youth MC...I'm there! Through A Glass, Darkly was a different kind of MC read for me. The religious aspect of Gideon's love interest being the kidnapped, 40th wife to a zealot was intriguing. Unfortunately, I had a tough time with this book. I didn't like Mahalia. I couldn't connect with her, couldn't relate. She was too all over the place for me: reciting scripture, yet cursing; giving off an innocent vibe yet her demeanor, history, and actions were not. It was like she was two different characters. Not liking her meant I didn't want her and Gideon together (I'm sorry!). Gideon was all I want in a Layla Wolfe biker book - rough, sexy, protective, and loyal. He is the total package! The story was total Layla, too! A gritty, action filled, bike reving story set in beautifully described scenery.
What can I say about this book? Its about Gideon and Mahalia. Gideon was sent to Utah as punishment for messing around with the Prez old lady and to handle the exchange of guns with Mormon polygamist Allred Lee Chiles. He's angry and just wants to finish what he was sent to do and leave. After the death of Mahalia's 1st husband, she is brought in to be another wife to Allred. She was once an outsider and wants to get out after hearing that Allred plans to make her daughter someone's 3rd wife. She is instantly drawn to Gideon and him to her. Mahalia was such a strong and caring h. Gideon took a while for me to warm to. He came off as a very hard H but deep down, he was soft for Mahalia. This author's books are like none else I have read. The writing and dialogue comes off as gritty and brash but it works. The story line with the cult feel definitely pulled me in. I hope there will be more books for each of the other bikers and some of the other women that escaped Allred.
I have enjoyed Layla's other series in the past and was lucky enough to get a copy of Through A Glass, Darkly to read and review. This is a new series and a has a bit of a different feel to her previous books (especially with the Mormon commune!) It took me a while to get into the book and connect with the characters, however once I had I really enjoyed this book. Although it has its moments it didn't feel as naughty as some of Layla's other offerings but I liked the spark between Gideon and Mahalia. I look forward to seeing how this series and the characters in the new MC chapter develop as the series progresses. In this book while telling Mahalia and Gideon's story Layla has done a great job of introducing lots of characters that I imagine will have great future storylines and I for one look forward to hearing their stories in the future!
Through the glass darkly (assassins of youth MC book 1) Reviewed on behalf of 2 girls who love books blog So first I want to start with fact the cover on this book is beautiful and elegant. So on starting this book I could tell it would be slightly different from what I have read of MC books before. The actual story line has huge potential but the language used didn’t make sense for a book set in 1995. For me I just couldn’t finish it I had no interest in the book it may suit others as it is a very tame MC book. “I unsheathed my dong with one hand” for me language like this just isn’t used by the new prez of a new chapter in an MC. I found the sex scenes uninspiring. This really was a slow read for me and in the end I gave up. I rate this story 1 stars.
So I was really excited to read this story but once I really started reading it I just couldn't get into for the life of me. It's slow and doesn't make sense at all to me. I really enjoyed the way the author has written it just wasn't for me. The mixture of religion and a bad ass biker just didn't sit right. The author did have great flow as far as her writing and the story line. I just think it took to long to get to the point of what was happening and the outcome took even longer to figure out. Most of the story it doesn't even seem that it's a MC type story.
I love Layla's work first and foremost. She is an amazing author with a talent for making her stories come to life. She held nothing back for this book and I am extremly honored to have read this book. I instantl fell in love with the main characters as well as the story line. Often times when I read m/f romance novels it's always the same old song and dance. But with 'Through A Glass, Darkly', I find a new style and a new plot. Sure there is romance, but there is also suspense and drama. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't put it down until the very last word. I reccommend this book to everyone! Go read it now!
