John Ostrander is an American writer of comic books. He is best known for his work on Suicide Squad, Grimjack and Star Wars: Legacy, series he helped create.

Originally an actor in a Chicago theatre company, Ostrander moved into writing comics in 1983. His first published works were stories about the character "Sargon, Mistress of War", who appeared the First Comics series Warp!, based on a series of plays by that same Chicago theatre company. He is co-creator of the character Grimjack with Timothy Truman, who originally appeared in a back up story in the First Comics title, Starslayer, before going on to appear in his own book, again published by First Comics in the mid 1980s. First Comics ceased publication in 1991, by which time Ostrander was already doing work for other comics companies (his first scripts for DC Comics were published in 1986).

Prior to his career in comic books, Ostrander studied theology with the intent of becoming a Catholic priest, but now describes himself as an agnostic. His in-depth explorations of morality were later used in his work writing The Spectre, a DC Comics series about the manifestation of the wrath of God. His focus on the character's human aspect, a dead police detective from the 1930s named Jim Corrigan, and his exploration of moral and theological themes brought new life to a character often thought of as impossible to write. He has also worked on Firestorm, Justice League, Martian Manhunter, Manhunter, Suicide Squad, and Wasteland for DC.

Reread July 2025 Review:

I took a 2 month break from comics due to life, studying, work, and other circumstances.

Picking up a comic book again for the first time in ~60 days felt so so good. I wanted to start this series over and get everything all back in my mind fresh again, as I stopped about midway through.

Unlike issue #1 where I felt like I should -.5 off my original review, this one sticks the landing and definitely remains as a solid 4 in my book.

BLUF - This is a super fun subsection of Star Wars that lands before The Old Republic era content (aka SWTOR and the like) and is a fun and unique experience outside of 'normal' Star Wars.

"Really liked it." - 4 out of 5 star rating.

Another fantastic entry in this Old Republic comic book series. Really enjoying the Xesh arc, how lightsabers are being depicted here, and the relationship/situation with Trill and the Rakata.

The Old Republic era continues to deliver and be some of the absolute very best in all of Star Wars.

Looking forward to what happens next!

Entry #2 finds Xesh's force saber in the hands of the forge master on Tython. Nothing can damage the metal and they can't make the thing work until Lok's old friend Hawk shows up and ignites it. It needs anger and he's in balance.

Trill arrives at the place where Xesh and his Rakkatan Predor were last on sensors. We get a little of her history, how she and Xesh grew up together, making a blood bond. A bond that Xesh broke and she's angry, reaches out and finds where he is.

Bogan and Xesh arrive in an unexpected manner on Krev Coeur to scour for crystals. The others figure out that Bogan and Xesh have escaped and figured out where they've gone and are likely to go.

Another solid entry.

I love these so much. This era is so interesting and I wish there was more to it, so I’m glad there are seemingly plans for a Dawn of the Jedi film. This is really just great and I love the way the Je’daii are so similar yet so different from the Jedi they will become. I think the Rakatans are fascinating. Trill and Xesh are my absolute favorites. I cannot wait to see what happens. Also, this relationship between Hawk Ryo and Daegen Lok has me very intrigued. They have history.

[Re-read December 22, 2021]

[Original review December 21, 2016]

The second issue of The Prisoner of Bogan series finds our protagonists attempting to discover the mystery behind Xesh's "Forcesaber" and the power it holds. Xesh's former masters, the Rakata, have sent their Force hound, Trill, to find Xesh. Meanwhile, Xesh's absence was finally noticed on Bogan, and two teams of Je'daii have been sent to uncover where he has gone. I'm really enjoying this storyline so far; I like that so many of the characters that were set up in the first volume (Force Storm) are interacting together now.
