Love and Star Stuff #3

Bela and the Black Hole

Rate this book
All my friends are Ivy-league-bound with four-year plans and guys they legitimately love. Me? Not even close.

While everyone I know has their life mapped out, I'm left behind. Floundering with a boyfriend I only sorta like.

The only person who seems to notice is Avery… unfortunately, he’s a Player with a capital P.

Oh, he’s also my boyfriend’s best friend. I’ve fallen for the wrong guy before…and don’t want to get hurt again. He's just so hard to resist when our gravitational pull feels so right.

I’m getting sucked into a black hole, and I don’t know if love is what I'll find on the other side.

There are just some books out there that personally touch you; that make you cry and laugh and swoon, even when you know that, objectively, there are probably a few things ‘wrong’ with the book. When the time comes that you have to sit down and review the book, it's a struggle. Do you rave about this book because it made you, personally, feel all the things or do you do the noble thing and try to objectively criticise the book? While, I normally lean to the latter, today I am just not in the mood. All I want to do is scream from the rooftops how bloody beautiful and heart-warming and true this story read; how much I enjoyed it and laughed and blushed and cried.

There are so few books that I can relate to on a personal level, but somehow each and every main characters in this companion series has reflected a different part of me. Monroe isn’t scared of getting down to the gritty levels of her characters, there’s no holding back. Each character’s story is emotional, grabbing and so damn relatable. In our society, teenagers get some pretty heavy mocking. All the parentals seem to do is bang on about how fortunate our generation is but it’s not all sunshine and dandelions in ‘our world’. And this author gets that! She gets our mindsets and exactly how overwhelming the world can seem at this time of our lives. I thought she manage to translate that onto the page this time around even better than her previous books managed to. Bela is a hearty, rich, vibrant character, unsure of herself but trying. I cared about her, and found myself engrossed in her story. I loved that she was different to Maggie & Tallie. Bela felt rawer and realer than both of them, and I loved how far she developed across the story, becoming a stronger, more reassured version of herself.

The writing was also spot on. Not many authors can manage to nail a modern-sounding writing style - either going overboard with the name/brand-dropping and lingo, or making it seem that teenagers speak their own language with weird text talk (and obviously knowing nothing about online communication). Monroe has a brilliant voice which is perfect for her characters and manages to reflect the era perfectly. She does mention current events/celebs but not in a “I’m trying to be a hip, down-with-the-teenagers” way. It’s just reflecting what the story needs to make it really come to life, and I cannot stress how much I enjoyed that.

There’s no doubting that this book did have it’s problems though. To put it bluntly, this book is cheesy to the max. But, in all seriousness, who doesn’t love a good cheesy romance every now and again? Personally, I think they’re good for the soul, so refreshingly fun. However, my main problem was how the romance was concluded The love triangle thing is going to drive some readers insane, but there’s no stopping that. My problem was that Monroe obviously took a lot of care to build up the possibility of this ‘second romance’ - making sure they worked up to a friendship first and all of that great stuff - but then they came to the point where they could take it a step further and they took it ten steps forward instead. It was a little bit too much too soon for me. I wanted even more tension, more development. It felt a little rushed.

Overall?

I enjoyed this story a lot. The characters were on point, especially Bela. The romance was sweet and cute, although a little rushed in the end. I felt that this story was the perfect conclusion to the trilogy - fitting, true and simply adorable.

Very enjoyable lighthearted read. I was one of those silently cheering and hoping for the best to happen with the main character with each turn of the page. She seemed to have all kinds of bad luck. This type of book is nice to read after some of the more intense, stressful ones before it. It is a great one to be able to pick up and relax with. I wonder if there will be any more in this series?

Another fun read in this series. I enjoyed reading Bela's story and I appreciated that each of the title characters in this series were really different in their personalities and struggles. I finished this in just a few sittings.
