A fun, inspiring memoir from “the Queen of YouTube” about her journey from anonymity in Florida to massive popularity on the Internet, filled with the unlikeliest of stories that are as poignant as they are hilarious
“Is you okay? Is you good? Cuz I want to know!”
Eager to entertain, dedicated to making people laugh, comedian and video superstar GloZell Green is game for any challenge, no matter how silly, gross, or absurd. Her crazy video stunts have propelled her into the ranks of legendary funny ladies such as Ellen DeGeneres, Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, and Phyllis Diller—and made her an inspiring icon for a new generation. With this funny and liberating book, GloZell uses the stories from her winding journey to unbelievable success to help her fans and young women everywhere navigate the obstacles we all face in life, while helping them find the greatness unique to each of them, inside and out.
Is You Okay? speaks truth about the elements of life we wrestle with every day—empowerment, love, body image, school, work, family, relationships, failure, success. GloZell introduces some of her most outlandish, funny, and unforgettable video challenges and uses each to explore a serious yet common hurdle. Sharing formative stories and insights from her own life, she encourages young women to learn to love their body, break free of their shell, and carve out their own identity.
Making the connection between hilarious physical challenges and meaningful personal challenges, GloZell shows that we’re all in this together. “Everything isn’t just gonna be okay. It doesn’t just have to be good,” she reminds us. “It can be great (even with a spoonful of pepper in your mouth).”
GloZell Green is a classically trained performer and Internet personality who has dedicated herself to making people laugh. The comedienne established her YouTube channel in 2008, which today boasts more than 4.2 million subscribers and a whopping 711 million views and counting, aptly earning her the "Queen of YouTube" title.
Green's YouTube channel features over 2,000 videos that include interviews, comedy about her life, song parodies and more. Five of her videos have been viewed more than 10 million times, and her Cinnamon Challenge video alone garnered over 45 million views. Her crazy stunts and comedic prowess have propelled her into the ranks of legendary funny ladies and have made her an inspiring icon for a new generation.
Green's YouTube platform established her as pop culture fixture, earning her the distinct honor of interviewing President Barak Obama at the White House in January 2015.
That same year, she announced her "Glo All In" docu-series with Awestruck Network, which documents her struggle with fertility and journey to motherhood. Green also appeared in The Wedding Ringer, Nickelodeon's Game Shakers, and in Todrick Hall's Cell Black Django, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White and the Seven Thugs. She wrapped up 2015 by interviewing presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
In 2016, Green was tapped to speak at the MAKERS Conference and announced the release of her first book with HarperOne publishing, Is You Ok?, available on June 7.
She has received widespread press coverage and has appeared on TODAY, The Talk, Dr. Oz, CNN, 20/20 and conducted interviews with The Los Angeles Times, People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Ebony Magazine and many more.
Green is a Florida native and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from the University of Florida. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband.
GloZell has a funny an inspirational message and it is that she is more than OK! I think that her basic message is to be yourself, no matter what, and to know yourself. Don't just think it, do it. Find a way!!! Don't let others stand in your way, and especially do not stand in your own way. Her book is so funny, very inspirational just like her and chatty just like her, and I can hear her, as she speaks to her readers directly! I have always loved watching her comedy videos on YouTube. That is where I know her best. She has kick ass comedic timing, and her one video of eating a spoon of cinnamon is still, her best!!! For a fun time, read, then go subscribe to her for lots of laughs in your future!!!
LOVE HER! Seriously, Glozell is an inspiring woman. She's silly and ridiculous online, yes, but she is also a real person, a beautiful person, a strong person. Someone who is worth knowing. Someone I wish I could know.
Before reading this book I had only seen some few videos from Glozell, not really a fan but I do recognize her magnetic personality.
Reading her book was all sorts of new for me, since I don't tend to read biographies, even less "youtuber's books" but there was something about Glozell and the cover that just called me.
I don't regret it in the least. The book is interesting, funny and has a very good message for people struggling with being "different", it might not be the greatest self-help book there is but for me it felt sincere, fun and authentic, with some good advice.
Her story might not be unique, her life-path or decisions might not be outstanding, but her way of approaching life and her analysis of it, though simple, can hep you feel not-so-alone when dealing with some of life's situations.
It made me smile more than once and I enjoyed it all the way through. Good, short and simple.
A funny book on the life and rise of an unconventional YouTube star. GlowZell Green is may be older than most of her legion of YouTube followers but her ability to impart humor to a variety of people is timeless. Green's book is witty, insightful and honest as she shares stories of her childhood in Florida as well as her personal struggles with finding a career and fertility. I listened to the audiobook version of the book and recommend this as the best way to experience her book since she reads her own words and her genuine larger than life personality really shines through.
When I saw Glozell wrote a book, I immediately wanted to read it. Instead of a book about her own life, this book seems more like it's about the people who helped her get to where she is in life. It had some funny parts, but it was definitely a bit flat to me in terms of the writing. For a woman who is so over the top in her videos, I thought her book came in as underwhelming when you compare it to her personality.
Did this audiobook and she is good (didn't know her via her YouTube videos or blog) as this was my intro to Glozell. Her story about her teacher splitting up her and her bestie in elementary school. Told with such grace, poise, and dignity... and she still showed kindness throughout. I aspire to be this level of comfortable with myself.
This feels a lot like when I snatched up Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, expecting the kind of humor that makes your sides hurt and tears roll down your face, but then all I felt was mild amusement and boredom. If Mindy's book was only slightly amusing, I must say that Glozell's book was an absolute snooze fest.
I was so excited when I found this book in the kindle store, with GloZell's maniacal smile and green lipstick glowing on the cover. I immediately messaged my sister, exclaiming that Glozell wrote a book!!, because it was actually my sister who first introduced me to this crazy woman via the "cinnamon challenge", which caused us to collapse in fits of laughter. I started reading right away, but quickly became quite bored. This wasn't a humorous account of Glozell's life... It actually felt more like a "how to become famous on YouTube" tutorial. It took me a whopping 15 days to read a 220-something page book. 😐
I probably just need to quit reading books like this, because I so rarely like them (Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is the only exception I can think of right now).
La classica scorciatoia all'americana.
I'll be honest I'm not on YouTube much and I had no idea who is Glozell Green when I started reading this book. I just liked the cover and the blurb inside in the book seemed interesting. As I was reading it I found it not hilarious but mildly amusing. When I was about 2/3 of the way through the book I decided to look at her videos.....big mistake! Not sure what people find funny about her as she is just annoying and obnoxious. I almost dropped this review to two stars after seeing the videos but left it at three since the book was obviously not written in her words but those of the co-author who toned her down her personality to make her less annoying.
I absolutely loved this book! Glozell Green is one of my favorite entertainers so when I heard she was coming out with a book I could not wait to read it. I don't normally read biographies but after reading this I will definitely start trying out more of them. This autobiography not only takes us through Glozell's life and her struggles as an aspiring comedian but also gives advice to people hoping to succeed in the industry and in life in general. I would recommend this to young adults because the book talks so much about career paths and this would apply more to people of that age. Overall I thought this book was great and I hope Glozell will write more in the future.
GloZell is an atypical YouTube star and also one of the most successful. She's interviewed President Obama and Former Presidential Candidate Hilary Clinton and also draws millions of (probably) young fans to her brand of comedy. And this memoir / advice book boldly tells her story and lets you know in no uncertain terms how and why she followed her dreams to become the entertainer she is and why you should too. In it, she quotes some of my favorite gurus - Steve Harvey and Malcolm Gladwell - which is enough to validate her advice, in my opinion. But this was an inspirational read, especially as a new YouTuber myself.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is wondering how to make their dreams a reality. The essential message is to be yourself and to know yourself. Don't just dream about what you want, find a way to make it happen. Don't let others stand in your way, and do NOT stand in your own way. GloZell's book is funny, inspirational and chatty....she speaks to her readers and fans directly throughout! For a fun time and numerous pearls of wisdom, pick up this book, read it, and apply it to your life.
I think glozell is a very talented young lady and she is doing good with her book .Also i think this book is very truthful and i love it.glozell if you are reading this i just wanted you to know i am a big fan and youaredoing a good job with your videos and your books and dont listen to what people think about your books if the things are bad but I LOVE IT.
I wanted to love this book. Argh! I had never heard of this author (YouTuber) and when I saw this title at the Dollar Tree I figured I had nothing to lose & quite possibly it would be a surprisingly entertaining book. It just wasn’t. My expectations fell flat. Just very disappointed! What a bummer!
I found this book in Dollar Tree, I used to watch Glozell a while back so for a dollar I couldn't pass it up. It was nice to get to know Glozell outside of YouTube.
I get an immense amount of joy watching GloZell on youtube, she's fun and funny and really open about how she feels and what she's thinking.
I actually found this memoir for my friend, she wanted to get into more nonfiction books and I felt this would have been a nice entrance into the nonfiction side of things. GloZell starts each chapter with a question she's been asked before, her answer, and then a story about something that happened in her life, what mistakes she made, and how she came out on the other side of things. It's motivating, it's honest, but it's still really funny and entertaining and you're gunna have a great time. She talks about the mistakes she's made and the hardships she's endured, but I've never felt drained reading her story [if that makes sense]. I've never felt like I had to put the book down and compose myself to keep reading, I emphasized with her struggles, with her sorrows, with her sense of being lost, but I was never overwhelmed by it [which can happen in memoirs, and regular books, so I was really happy that it wasn't happening here].
GloZell wants you to learn from her mistakes, she wants to show you the way [as best she can] so that it's easier for you to get out there and get a head start, she wants you to be the very best you that you could ever be. And I love her for it, and I love that that's her whole message to the world.
I didn't know I needed this book as much as I need to drink more water everyday. They way Glozell effortlessly tells her story and her truth had me smiling, laughing, and crying! The emotional roller coaster she takes you on is personal, deep, but authentic. She lets you into her life from the time she was a young girl to 2016 when the book was published.
She has left me wanting to fight for my dreams, fight for the life I want to live, and to have faith. Like she says "Life doesn't have to just be okay. I promise, it can be great".
I love Glozell, her videos are hilarious! This book, however, bored me. I guess being that it is an autobiography would mean that it wouldn’t be super funny. To be fair I had no idea it was an autobiography. I did learn a lot about her and I’m glad I read it, but I was so excited I bought a signed copy of the physical book as well as a copy on audible. I’m happy to support her but it’s not anything I would read again. I thought it would have been more funny stories, and there were some, but I found myself wishing the book would end faster because it just wasn’t keeping my attention.
I thought Glozell's book was very authentic to her persona on YouTube. She was one of the first content creators of color that I subscribed to. The gist of the book is that she and her peers were steadily trying to learn how to fit in for most of their lives. She eventually realized that it is okay for her (and you) to learn how to stand out.
I didn't think this book was going to be this great because i watched a few videos of her's and thought they are good videos but she is a little weird and i thought the book was going to be worse but it actually turned out to be really good and her advice i am definitely taking it. Because she is very inspirational and motivating.
I have always been a huge fan of Glozell and used to watch all her videos with my friends back in the early YouTube days. It’s the perfect blend of both humor and advice. That being said, multiple references to her working with and being friends with Colleen Ballinger gave me the ick and made what should have been a sweet and funny book age like milk.
I absolutely loved this book! It was a very heartfelt book that made me realize important things that I never noticed before! I think Glozell has a great way of writing with humor but, also teaching important lessons at the same time! I love this book!😍
