Tucked safely away from the world on their peninsula, the 'Veld kingdoms—Estveld and Ostveld—have had little to do with the rest of the world, instead focusing their efforts on fighting each other. But the world hadn't forgotten about them, and the Cheil Empire turned its armies their way.

The three 'Velds allied together, but even their combined might was not enough to prevent defeat. The kings are forced to surrender, but the terms for Estveld and Ostveld appear suspiciously lenient; each kingdom will maintain its independence, so long as the royal bloodline continues unbroken. The only catch seems to be that the Cheil Emperor is allowed to choose each generation's bride.

Prince Cavan of Ostveld fears he won't be allowed to marry the princess to whom he was betrothed. Prince Gair of Estveld never intended to marry at all. But the surrender is already signed, and they are left with no choice but to travel to the capital of the Cheil Empire where they will learn who—or what—the Emperor has in store for them.

A.R. Jarvis was born in Madison, WI, where she then grew up. Despite several attempts to move away, she still lives there. Several of those attempts were to work at various Outdoor Education schools, which is about as crazy as it sounds. She also owns a pet rabbit, who is a spoiled princess and likes to chew on Important Electrical Cables. The rabbit is currently A.R. Jarvis' photo, since she can't seem to find any of herself.

The first half of the book was great, but after the main characters got together the story seemed to drag on. It continued up to the point where both their fathers died, yet they still found no solution to appointing an heir that can pass the demands of the Empire.
Also I was VERY confused about the sex of the mage's newborn baby. Was it a girl or a boy after all?

I rather liked it, even if I rather dislike the name "Gair" and I'd have preferred if it ended a bit more...resolutely. As is, it rather leaves you hanging. Still, the universe is fantastic, and I'd really like for there to be more.

And yes, I was happy there was a Cavan-topping-Gair scene.

I read this story originally when it was posted to fictionpress and livejournal as two stories. The author did a great job editing and cleaning up everything, and I was so happy to finally be able to get a copy after it was unavailable on kindle for a while. I recommend this book wholeheartedly!

I read this book in less then one day, what i can say is really good.Gair and Cavan are enemies who unite their armies to fight versus the emperor, they lose the war and the emperor calls them at court to discuss the terms of surrender. There they discover they'll need to be married to the other prince they come there with.In the start both fight and are brooding and i really loved their bitchering, was funny, but in the end those two idiots fall in love.Their story is not easy, because most of the ppl call pervert the love btw men,but they're strong and faithfull to each other, and they decline the suggest of taking a mistress, saying they'll never cheat on their husband.Cavan had loved other two person before Gair, one was a guard named Tullio, that he met on the ship he served, but he died soon after they admitted their love and Cavan never was intimate with him,the other person he loved was Eleanor, but after he gets married to Gair and starts being with him more,he understands he loves now Eleanor only like a sister.Gair is his first and both know his only from then on,since both of them are too jealous to ever think about seeing the other with a different lover.About Gair i dont think Cavan was his first, because he says to him he loved another person before him,a distand cousin, and that after he experienced some with other people, but nothing is explicit told so im not sure about it,or if his experience was only limited on the top position,dunno...
Was really nice to read a book where romance is more importante then sex,and where the plot actually makes sense.Im sad that the book ended, and i hoped there was more to read, also bcs the end is open on the fact that maybe one day the could adopt a daughter and at the same time fight again against the emperor to get their real freedom.
4 stars because they're awesome together, and the sexual tension and bitchring of the start makes all better, plus they love the other soooo much and you see that in each word or action they say or make.Said this, like always ignore my grammar errors in this review, and go read the book btw, also the author likes to use less L then the one some word needs,so dont be surprised if u see some word with less L. ;P

The war between the three 'Veld Kingdoms and the Cheil Empire is over and the 'Velds have lost. Estveld, Ostveld, and Norveld must bow down to the Cheil Emperor and accept the terms of surrender. The terms that affect the two 'Veld Princes, Prince Cavan of Ostveld and Prince Gair of Estveld, is the promise to allow the Emperor to choose their brides. As they travel to Cheil to learn their fate, the "pampered" prince of Ostveld and the "warrior" prince of Estveld who were formally antagonistic, must learn to work together against a common enemy.

I really loved Cavan and Gair. I thought the build up of their relationship was very touching and plausible. The author took time to build their friendship and trust before moving into more, which I really enjoyed reading. I thought the plot was more of a story about their life after the war, as there was no real conflict or mystery to solve.

I could definitely see a sequel to this book to find out how they are going to get out of the "heir" issue, and if it is written, I will definitely be reading it.

I first saw the book in fanfiction.com and waited around before finally purchasing the ebook and reading it the past week. The most outstanding thing in this book that amazed me was the world building. Out of all the books I've read with settings of an alternate universe, this is one of the best crafted world. The nuggets of information about the politics in it were all very fascinating. On top of that, the romance between the two main characters weren't lacking. Although I would have expected a more subtle change from not really liking each other to love, it was generally okay for me. Another point would be the development of side characters. They were not as fully developed but were interesting enough that I'd certainly wouldn't mind reading more about. While there were still some loose ends at the end of the book, overall this was an excellent story!

The story dragged some in the middle and the ending then left me unsatisfied, that's why it's not a five stars.
Prince Cavan and Gair are caught unprepared by some terms, when both their kingdoms are conquered. Their both kingdoms or Veld's were at war with each other for a long time and now an foreign ruler chose them to unite their countries.
Both prices start as enemies and there is a slow development in their relationship, which is well done. It's an interesting story and a well developed one. Both countries do not just accept each other and their fate and problems arise. Some parts could have been shorter however and some sort of major conflict would have been nice, the spats of the nobility were mostly borring and they take a lot of pages.

I am so happy I found this book. Now I really want a sequel with these amazing characters and world. I loved the fact that Cavan and Gair hated eachother in the begining but grew to really love and count on eachother. It really needs a sequel though and soon.
