5/6 The Umbrella Academy

Woah, that got real dark real fast.
I just wish the White Violin gave us more time. Everything is getting so twisted with the death, kiss and practice.

The following is a review for the six parts that make up the first volume, as it is difficult to review each individual part alone.

I’ve heard a lot about The Umbrella Academy, so I decided it was finally time to dive into the first volume – Apocalypse Suite – and give it a try. I’ll be honest and say that I’m not the biggest fan of graphic novels, in fact I’m super picky, but I was curious enough to dive in.

Apocalypse Suite was an interesting introduction to The Umbrella Academy world, and I happily devoured this in no time. Although it was an easy read that had me curious about how things would play out, it did not wow me quite as much as I had hoped it would. There were quite a few things that were never quite as clear as I had hoped, and this stopped me from being fully invested.

All in all, interesting but not quite for me.

I swear this issue is the smaller brutal storm before the real storm, and I’m not even talking about what happened in that diner. Although Agnes, the waitress, will probably be talking about it to her therapist for quite a while. So heres something important to note, pogo of course is not the only intelligent chimpanzee running around, and apparently a lot of them are employed by the police force that came to the diner five left behind. Remember those weird guys in suits looking for him…he killed them all. Almost in the blink of an eye, so fast and without mercy that the waitress could barely register it before the walls were stained in blood. One thing I do love about the show so much…is really adapting the fight to live action and making it glorious! As inspector Lili leaves the scene and lights one up in his car…kraken startled him from the back seat. Regular Batman and Gordon situation they have going on here…if Gordon was quick to try and blow Batman’s brains out when startled, lol. Lupo was able to tell kraken about the chimp and boy wearing the black school uniform that painted the diner, I’m sure kraken will have to look far and wide to figure out who that is. But really kraken is here because he needs help, he needs a lead to the end of the world. Lupo isn’t sure it’s anything, but there have been a lot of violinists going missing lately. Hey, isn’t your sister a violinist kraken? But before the detective can even look for a response…kraken is gone, out the window. Heh, regular Batman and Gordon those two.

Back at the academy, pogo is very interested to know who those people five killed were…but five is more interested in ripping apart Reginald’s office to find his revolver so he can end things before the end times. But instead five finds his father’s famous monocle. Five isn’t sure how to explain the guys he killed, it’s very complicated and there is a lot more he had to do than he was letting on to get back here…but it all starts with the Kennedy assassination. But as five is beginning to explain this, he also took the liberty of putting on the monocle…only to collapse with information overload. Turns out the monocle shows the wearer a lot of information about whatever subject they are looking at. In this case he saw pogo’s history as in an inhumane lab where he was ventilator bought by Reginald.

Elsewhere in the city Luthor and Allison get a chance to catch up, she’s actually wearing her mask now, but this just poses a lot more questions. Is she wearing it to feel like herself, or who she thinks she’s supposed to be? But heres the thing, she has an entire life outside the academy, and she can’t stop thinking about her girl and her ex…and her ex’s girlfriend. Turns out she told her daughter all about her uncle on the moon, but Luthor isn’t the best with personal conversations. He always shifts it back to their super hero lives, and is more worried about Allison not using her powers. When she calls him out on that he explains that he really doesn’t have a choice, looking like he does he doesn’t have a chance to have a normal life…is it’s healthier for him to focus on saving the world to keep people like her daughter safe. But heres the thing, Allison then proceeds to mention a rumor she heard that Luthor wanted to kiss her since they were 8. Luthor gets a surprised look on his face and the two embrace with Klaus watching from behind a water tower. But this does draw quite a few complicated questions, weeded those emotions for each other just then real? Or did Allison use her powers to supplant that emotion? Based on the show characterizations I would say they are real, but then again…

Downtown Diego arrives at Vanya’s house to find a note pointing to the theater…all while Vanya rolls up on the umbrella academy for a warmup on destroying the world. She users her powers to erupt the entire building in flames, then slices the statue dedicated to Ben in half. When pogo goes to the window in horror, Vanya severs the one connection to humanity she had by blowing pogo’s brains out of his head. NOOOOOO, the art is amazing and horrific but OMG NO!!! As Vanya leaves, five wakes up and looks at her…apparently fascinated by what he sees through the monocle. But then he sees pogo and is at a loss. Only for the issue to send with spaceboy, rumor, and séance showing up wondering what happened!! I think it’s time to face the end of the world fam.

We're once again thrown into the aftermath of some pretty bad stuff. The Boy used his power in a diner and left behind a traumatised waitress, some of Kraken's secret connections are revealed, something unexpected happens between Rumor & Spaceboy, plus The White Violin is really hellbent on destroying the world. :/

Wow. Wasn't expecting there to be a loss in this issue. And just when I realised how cool this character really was, and how much kudos they deserved. It especially got me because of the kindness offered from one character to another was pretty much destroyed here.

*cries*

Still enjoying this story and can't wait to see how it ends...

Personally, I find that "The Umbrella Academy" #5 (assuming you're referring to the fifth volume of the comic series) maintains the tone and quality that the series is known for. The plot remains intriguing, with complex characters and situations that defy convention. Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá have created a rich and nuanced universe that combines superhero elements with a dark and sometimes surreal narrative.

Moving along

The characters are becoming a little more interesting. It’s hard to tell the good guys, if there are an, from the bad. Not sure how things are going to be tied up in one more issue.

Look, if you happen to look at my review and think, "what the hell this girl is talking about", don't bother to look.

I’m so glad Pogo is finally gone. Still can’t stand the relationship between Luther and Allison, though. On to the next!

Ok so, loved the Harley Quinn lookalike the White Violin is. Really. Everything is getting dark so quick, yet why so quick?
