178 books422 followersCada día tengo más dudas acerca de quién diablos es Care Santos. Si es la misma insulsa que todas las mañanas me mira desde el espejo del baño o es esa que, de vez en cuando, hace algo que merece la atención ajena. La atención de gente de fiar, quiero decir.
Cronológicamente, ambas estamos muy puestas de acuerdo desde antiguo: más de cuarenta años ya de coincidir en todas partes: en las mismas calles, y cines y teatros y restaurantes, en aquella facultad de Derecho donde ambas nos aburrimos tanto, en la misma playa de Malgrat, en el mismo periódico barcelonés de los primeros tanteos con la palabra, en los mismos cuerpos amados, en las mismas amistades que compartimos.
Pero hay entre nosotras abismos que nos separan cada vez más: la que me mira desde el espejo nunca se atrevería a opinar, ni a levantar la voz, ni a subir al escenario. Es la que admira desde la pequeñez, y ordena por colores y tamaños sus admiraciones, se emociona con la palabra ajena y deletrea nombres a quienes sabe que jamás podrá alcanzar. Es la que teme por todo, la permanentemente hiperestésica, la acomodaticia, la que no es nunca tan feliz como entre fogones, cocinando un arroz o inventando un pastel de chocolate. Es la que cree los ojos de sus hijos poblados de pequeños milagros, la que aspira a plantar un limonero en tierra propia y verlo crecer, la que es capaz de extrañar durante años, la que entiende, tristemente, que los ideales no existen para ser cumplidos. La odiosa.
La otra es mujer de mundo y jamás se siente extraña en ninguna parte si lleva consigo un cuaderno y un amigo. Tantas veces la han seducido tierras lejanas y acentos extraños que ya no podría entenderse sin ese aprendizaje de la soledad que tanto tiene que ver con la escritura. Sabe ser incómoda y respondona, aunque no siempre lo hace. No se resigna a mirar la función desde lel patio de butacas, porque ha descubierto que en el escenario se siente como en casa. Ante el blanco del papel siempre trata de matar al padre, pero nunca sabe si lo consigue, y por eso sigue intentándolo. Apunta alto, ambiciona, trabaja, se rebela y todavía cree que hay ideas que algún día salvarán al mundo.
Las dos se hacen préstamos sin cesar, ambas están en deuda con la otra. Entre las dos, a partes iguales, han escrito algunas cosas, han salido en los periódicos, han subido a algunos escenarios.
Nos odiamos. Tanto como lo hacen los que se necesitan.

Неангажиращо четиво, подходящо за проветряване на мозъка между две стойностни книги. Състои се от три истории, първата се чете бързо и леко, втората започва постепенно да доскучава, а третата откровено цикли.
Но ми беше интересно да узная, че в исторически план испанците са първите в Европа, които започват приготвянето на твърд шоколад, въпреки че днес отдавна са изтрити от картата на водещите "шоколадови" нации.

May 12, 2016Care Santos (n. 1970) este una dintre cele mai importante scriitoare din Spania. Scrie (atât în catalană, cât și în spaniolă) romane, proză scurtă, poezie, literatură pentru adolescenți și pentru copii. După cum declara scriitoarea într-un interviu, de pe urma literaturii pentru copii câștigă mai mult decât din cea pentru adulți, din acest punct de vedere piața de carte din Spania fiind similară celei din România. Santos numără deja peste 40 de volume, multe traduse în numeroase limbi. În plus, este și fondatoarea Asociației tinerilor scriitori din Spania, a cărei președintă a fost pentru opt ani. Ar mai fi de adăugat că scrie cronică literară pentru El Mundo. Și are și trei copii.
După Încăperi ferecate și Aerul pe care îl respiri, la Humanitas i-a fost tradus din catalană de către Jana Balacciu Matei și cel mai recent roman – Poftă de ciocolată (2014), la a cărui lansare în România a fost prezentă și Care Santos. Și în această carte regăsim preocuparea autoarei pentru istorie, pentru tot ceea ce însemnă reconstituire sau creare de atmosferă, dar mai ales pentru pasiunile omenești, pentru dorința care schimbă ziua de ieri și pe cea de azi cu cea de mâine.
Poftă de ciocolată este un roman foarte generos și prietenos cu cititorul. În primul rând prin plăcerea de a povesti care se resimte în fiecare pagină. Alcătuit din trei părți, scrise în stiluri diferite, romanul e alcătuit din trei povești care au în centru trei femei din trei secole diferite, viețile și întâmplările strângându-se în jurul unei ciocolatiere, un obiect din porțelan fin care ascunde multe povești și care circulă din mână în mână sute de ani. Ciocolatiera fragilă, ciobită, spartă la un moment dat și lipită cu adeziv este o punere în abis a vieților personajelor, pline și acestea de cicatrici, din bucăți salvate și lipite.
„Poate cicatricile n-o să se şteargă niciodată de tot, ca pe pielea obiectului care începe să se refacă în mâinile lui, dar va trebui să înveţe să le admire semnificaţia.
E o frumuseţe indiscutabilă, aparte, în ceea ce am putut noi salva”.
„Max îşi plimbă vârful degetului peste rana veche. Are asprimea ceramicii proaspăt arse. Asprimea pe care o au probabil toate lucrurile frumoase văzute din interior. Asprimea trecerii anilor. Deşi cârpită de sus până jos, poate fi încă folosită. Încap în ea trei ceşti de ciocolată”.

"Desire for Chocolate" has three parts that are revealed in a descending chronological way. We first meet Sara, who is our contemporary and lives in modern Barcelona. She is married, has two children and is the proud owner of a chocolate store in the heart of the city.
In the second section, we travel in the nineteenth-century and meet the next main character from "Desire for Chocolate". Her name is Aurora and she was born in a very rich and prestigious family. Her mother worked as a maid in the house but died while giving birth.
For the third part of the novel, the author takes us even further in time, in the seventeenth century. Here, we meet the gorgeous Mariana, the wife of a chocolate manufacturer.

I very much enjoyed reading "Desire for Chocolate". It has a warm way of revealing its secrets. Care Santos blend in her story real characters with fictional ones (in the copy I had there were specified at the end of the book). Reading the novel you will not only crave for hot chocolate, but you will also learn how the cocoa bean arrived and Europe and how it ended up to be so sophisticated as it is today. So who should read it? I don't think it has an age recommendation, but I am sure that ladies will appreciate it more than men.

Купена спонтанно, след няколко отлагания, при които водих не битка, ами направо война със себе си, не съжалявам за избора си. Да, взех я заради заглавието, признавам си без бой. :D Много ми се ходи в Барселона (да видим кога ще ме огрее слънцето и на този фронт), обичам шоколад (защото кой не обича...), пък и отзад, на корицата, пише "Каре Сантос - най-продаваната писателка в Испания". Логично е, щом е най-продаваната, да е добра, нали? И така се прибрахме заедно вкъщи. :D
Книгата е интересна, ненатоварваща, леко четиво, съдържащо три различни истории от три века, свързани чрез една малка подробност (не мисля да ви казвам каква точно). Иначе нямат нищо общо помежду си. Лично на мен най-интересна ми беше първата - тази, която се развива в наши дни.
Още не съм сигурна колко звездички да дам. Не за друго, ами не е от книгите, които те грабват, поглъщат и не можеш да ги оставиш. Аз нямах никакъв проблем с това да прочета една глава, примерно, и да си легна. Което не е причината да я влача почти месец. Просто бях заета и с други неща. Особено през последната седмица. Но това са подробности, които нямат кой знае какво значение.
Бих препоръчала книгата, ако ви се чете нещо, с което да се поуспокоите от натовареното ежедневие и да се унесете преди сън.

I'll just start by saying I was an insufferable elitist when I first read this book and I have thus changed the rating of this gem where it belonged the first time. (I liked the book just fine back in 2017, but I was a prick. I also don't think it's chick-lit. I'll leave the previous review here because it's proof that people can grow if they want to.)
I still stand by everything I wrote back in 2017 except for "doesn't bring up any philosophical questions". Because Care Santos definitely included themes that made me ponder. Female resilience is one of these, and it shines through all three stories, as each of the protagonists is confronted with unique challenges shaped by the societal norms of her time.
Also, I just want to mention that Care Santos was the first author (through this book, in particular) who sparked my desire to see Barcelona. So she will always hold a dear spot in my heart.
The book is made up of three stories, each relevant for a particular time period. The stories are tied together by an object - a porcelain chocolate pot that is thought to have belonged to Madame Adélaïde de France, the fourth daughter of King Louis XV. More than just a functional object, the pot represents continuity, legacy, but maybe also the unspoken bond between generations of women. Its presence in each story weaves a thread through time, carrying with it memories and desires, not only the rich history of chocolate itself. As for chocolate, it also serves as a central concept, seen both as pleasure and temptation, but also as a symbol for the bittersweet complexities of life.
Sara's story (present)
Sara Rovira is a chocolatier in Barcelona who struggles to balance her career and her marriage, while harbouring a guilty secret she thinks no one knows about. I admired Sara for her will to obtain everything she wanted - be it her family, her business or (less morally desirable) her love life. There's a love triangle issue I don't usually approve of, or even enjoy in a novel, but the way this story is told - including the erotic passages - is quite delicate and non-judgemental, so I ended up not judging her either. For Sara, the chocolate pot becomes a source of inspiration, but mainly a symbol of the strong friendship that ties her to her husband and her best friend, a love triangle born during a chocolate course all of them attended in their 20s and that lasted over 20 years.
Aurora's story (19th century)
Aurora is a maid in the home of an industry magnate during the Industrial Revolution, a time when the art of chocolate-making was being transformed by technological advancements. Despite her lower status, she becomes a vital figure in the household due to her birth and subsequent condition of "milk sister" to Candida Turull, the family's only daughter. The Turull family marks the transition from artisanal chocolate-making to large-scale industrial production, which defined the era. Her story - a heartwarming one, in the end - explores class divides, but points out that status and wealth do not always bring happiness. While the first story may just be my favourite one, because I love strong women who know exactly what they want, this second one features one of the most delicate, touching love stories I've read about.
Marianna's story (18th century)
Marianna is the wife of a chocolatier in pre-revolutionary Barcelona, living in a time when chocolate was an artisanal luxury consumed primarily by the wealthy elite and only men could pertain to a guild and exercise this occupation. Together with her husband, she invented a machine that would efficientize chocolate making, an object much desired by the guild, but also by representatives from the courts of France and England. Marianna’s story highlights the struggles and resilience of women who supported their husbands’ work in an era when their contributions were often overlooked. The chocolate pot, which she receives as a gift from Madame Adélaïde de France, becomes a symbol of liberation from the gender constraints of those times. While I loved this story as well, mainly because of its historical context, I don't feel Marianna was truly the protagonist. The story (about her, but where her role is a rather muted one) is told from the perspective of Victor Guilllot, Madame Adélaïde's secretary and spy. This story reminded me of old cape and sword novels such as "The Three Musketeers", as it features many action scenes that include duels, spying and the good old "save the damsel in distress" trope.
In fact, one of my favorite things about this novel is the way it's written. Each story features a different style, somewhat matching the era it describes. The last part even includes one chapter written as a play, an homage to the art form that was so beloved during those times.
While it is mostly a character-driven prose, I appreciated the way Care Santos anchored each tale in the realities of their times, by inserting historical details that make it possible to accurately place them where they are supposed to be. Whether describing the pre-revolutionary aristocracy of Barcelona, the industrial advancements of the 19th century or the modern-day challenges of running a business, Santos grounds her narrative in well-researched context. Barcelona changes through the eras, is dressed up in consumes that reflect the times, but chocolate remains the common element that ties it all together.
Moreover, what this novel does well is to give voice to women from different historical periods, exploring how they navigate societal constraints while finding strength and purpose in their roles.

To start, I just want to say that I didn't give it 4 stars simply because it cannot compare to classics and other authors that I've given 4 and 5 stars to, but I really liked this book. I'm actually surprised that I liked it so much, given that it's basically chick-lit.
It's an easy read, it doesn't require much effort and doesn't bring up any philosophical questions. However, the mixture of history, real persons and fiction is so well managed, that I found this book highly enjoyable. The characters are well defined and relatable and I found the stories well written and easy to engage with. The first one more so than the others, maybe because it happens in our times.
I liked the infusion of eroticism in the first story, it wasn't too over the top, just enough to give the reader a kick. And I found myself having chocolate cravings while I read the book (not that I don't crave chocolate on a daily basis), which means to me that the author was well-informed about the history and process of chocolate-making and she managed to put it all in writing in an engaging way.
Summer read, I picked it up because of the title, but I'm happy I did.

I don't know what it is exactly, but I am growing ever more fond of Spanish and South-American authors. They all seem to have a particular talent for telling a good story, spiced with accurate historical details and characters. Care Santos is one such author. I loved her previous novel and although this one presented itself as a bit less appealing in the beginning, I became really engrossed in the story after the first few chapters.
The book is a tribute to the great Barcelonese tradition of chocolate making, revolving around a porcelain chocolate can, which once belonged to a relative of Louis XVI of France. In three different time periods: the present, the end of the 19th century, and the end of the 18th century, we meet characters who are in some way connected to the chocolate-making business and who come across this remarkable porcelain can.
Some of the characters are fictitious but others have really existed and this book made me want to know more about them.
I most definitely will look out for Santos's next novel.

Structurat în trei părți, romanul „Poftă de ciocolată” surprinde prin originalitate și complexitate, oferind un adevărat festin al stilurilor. Care Santos ne poartă prin povestire la persoana a treia, adresare la persoana a doua, epistolă și teatru pe fundalul unei incursiuni în istoria ciocolatei. Elementul central, o ciocolatieră din porțelan ce poartă misterioasa inscripție „Je suis a madame Adelaide de France”, dă naștere celor trei povești cu scriituri și tonalități diferite. Minunata ciocolatieră în care încap doar trei cești de ciocolată își deapănă povestea alături de trei femei, din trei timpuri diferite – Sara, Aurora și Marianna – care nu au nicio legătură între ele, în afară de pasiunea și pofta pentru ciocolată.
Pășind pe urmele istoriei ciocolatei intrăm inițial pe scena secolului XX alături de personajele Sara, Max și Orion, pe care îi leagă o prietenie născută la un curs de ciocolată. O poveste exuberantă, libertină, plină de trăiri și sentimente, cu un final surprinzător.
„Ei, iat-o Sara, e doar a ta. Pleacă mulțumită: ai cumpărat un obiect încărcat de povești. Dacă-ți apleci urechea, vei putea să le-asculți, sunt sigur.”
Lăsând în urmă extravaganța secolului XX, poposim la umbra secolului al XIX-lea, alături de personajele Aurora și Candida, care prezintă acel aspect al societății în care căsătoria cu un om de vază cântărește în fața acesteia. O societate fascinată de acordurile muzicale ale operei.
„… ajungi la concluzia că muzica asta și omul acesta sunt unul și același lucru: un miracol în stare să transforme oameni. Să te transforme pe tine, Aurora – sărăcuța nenorocoasă ai fost în viață, va trebui să compensăm într-un fel -, în femeia pe care el o voia lângă el. Sau poate în cea pe care-o purtai în tine fără să știi.”
Scăpând de încastrările acestui secol, ne afundăm mai departe în istorie, în secolul al XVIII-lea, locul unde a luat naștere această poveste a ciocolatei, alături de Marianna, soţia unui producător de ciocolată, ce primeşte în dar de la Adelaide, fiica regelui Ludovic al XV-lea, faimoasa ciocolatieră.
Autoarea navighează cu măiestrie prin numeroase detalii istorice, ce completează impecabil această ficțiune cu construcții elaborate și planuri paralele. Nu face doar o incursiune în istoria ciocolatei, ci și a femeii, pornind de la Sara, femeia modernă de afaceri, la Aurora, femeia care trăiește cu înfrigurare ideile noii lumi, până la Marianna, femeia care nu avea nici un drept sau statut fără un bărbat alături, ori chiar misterioasa Adelaide.
Care Santos a creat un roman fabulos surprinzând prin ingeniozitatea structurii, complexitatea stilurilor, alegerea elementului central și inserțiile istorice.

Barcelonalainen Care Santos on Katalonian eturivin kirjailijoita ja hänen laajasta tuotannostaan on nyt suomennettu ensimmäinen kirja Suklaan maku. Kirjan pääosassa on kaakaokannu, mutta kirja ei suinkaan ole mikään keittokirja, vaan kaakaokannu matkaa kirjan kertomuksissa ajassa taaksepäin nykyajan Barcelonasta 1700-luvulle asti, siihen aikaan, kun tämä kyseinen kaakaokannu valmistettiin Ranskassa Sèvres´n posliinitehtaalla. Uf...una pena. Me parece que la autora escribe muy bien, pero también me parece que el libro es un peñazo.
La primera historia repetitiva y con una protagonista que cae mal a más no poder.
Después empieza ya el desbarre, todo inconexo salvo por la dichosa chocolatera..que he salido de ella hasta el moño.
Muy muy muuuuuuuuy aburrido y más largo que un día sin pan para al final no contar nada de relevancia.
La primera historia repetitiva y con una protagonista que cae mal a más no poder.

I received a copy of this book from Nudge Books in an exchange for an honest review.
I chose this book because of the title as I though it would be full of wonderful mouthwatering descriptions of the chocolate making process, so I was very disappointed to discover that there were hardly any. The stories in this book are more about relationships both in and outside marriage and of employer/employee relations. I admit that I struggled with it but was determined to read it through in the hope that it would improve.
I didn't warm to the characters or the style of writing in the first two stories, although Candida in the second part was so incredibly spoilt and well written. I loved the main characters and the writing in the third and final story.
I wonder if perhaps something was missing in the translation of the first two stories as they came across as quite stiff and formal, whereas the final story was much easier and I would even say a joy to read compared to the previous two. I enjoyed the underlying story of the little chocolate pot and how it came to be in the possession of the various characters throughout the book. Maybe the story is really about the chocolate pot and not the women. I'm not sure I rush out and buy a book by this author or recommend it to friends.

În centrul poveștii sau, mai bine zis, al poveștilor din carte, se află nu atât ciocolata, deși am aflat câteva date interesante despre istoria acesteia, despre originea ei, modul de preparare și de servire de-a lungul timpului, ci o ciocolatieră din porțelan fin, care a aparținut la origine lui madame Adélaïde, fiica regelui Ludovic al XV-lea al Franței, așa cum o dovedea fina inscripție cu litere albastre de la baza ei. O ciocolatieră un care încăpeau fix trei cești de ciocolată.
Ca structură, cartea e împărțită în trei părți, fiecare parte surprinzând momente din viața unor personaje, urmărind drumul ciocolatierei de porțelan, dinspre prezent spre trecut. Spre deosebire de alte povești de genul acesta, în care se descoperă la un moment dat o legătură neștiută între proprietarii unui anumit obiect ce leagă istorii în jurul său, de această dată protagonistele celor trei povești situate în timpuri diferite - Sara, Aurora și Marianna - nu au nici o legătură între ele, în afară de pasiunea lor pentru ciocolată și de a deține - pentru un timp - fragilul obiect de porțelan.

Me decidí a leerme este libro porque tiene lugar en Barcelona y echo de menos vivir allí, pero se me ha hecho larguísimo.
La historia va cambiado de época poco a poco, desde el presente hacia el pasado, siguiendo la trayectoria de una chocolatera de cerámica, y contándote cómo los personajes se conocen entre ellos. Empieza bien y en seguida se va al garete, cuando la primera protagonista decide hacerse pasar por lesbiana para poder ligar con un hombre. No mejora desde ese punto. Entre que la historia es muy melodramática y que no me cae particularmente bien ningún personaje, iba perdiendo el hilo a cada rato.
Lo de repetir Bella figlia dell'amore 15.000 veces también se hizo muy cansado. Usar los temas de las ópera que va mencionando dentro de la novela y relacionarlas con lo que les pasa a los personajes podría haber funcionado mejor. Y que yo sepa... Leporello no es un tenor.

Poftă de ciocolată mi-a dăruit o poveste altfel, intrigându-mă și stârnindu-mi curiozitatea până la final. Și cum să fie altfel când Care Santos ne poartă pe urmele bătătorite ale trecutului și, întocmai ca un rac, ne duce până în acel punct ce a dat startul aventurii din prezent.
O minunată ciocolatieră în care încap exact doar trei cești de ciocolată ”își deapănă” povestea, purtându-ne cu pași mici până în acel trecut în care s-a desăvârșit, a fost cizelată, nepurtând urmele veacurilor. O descoperim mai întâi, ca ceea ce a devenit: o ciocolatieră, un pic ciobită în vârf, care și-a pierdut capacul și morișca, dar care încă captivează privirea ca atunci când era proaspăt ieșită din fabrică.

I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, the back cover page with the synopsis was the most interesting read for me. The first part was ok and was easy to read. In the second part the author changed her voice for the new character and story line and it just didn't work. I felt like I was reading a creative writing assignment where the author was advised to write in different styles and try new writing techniques. I'm trying to get through the third part, which other reviewers seemed to like the most, but I can't follow the characters or the story. I just feel bad for the chocolate pot - it keeps getting abused and dumped on. It deserves better.

Libro molto scorrevole, ma le 3 storie (tutte legate dalla cioccolatiera) ambientate in 3 epoche storiche sono completamente slegate tra loro.
L'ho trovato per questo un po' insulso.
Sarebbe stato interessante approfondire il tema della cioccolata e dell'evoluzione nella sua lavorazione nel corso dei secoli, ma niente da fare..

Three different stories, three different women, three different writing styles, at the heart of which is the same chocolate pot.
In part one, written in the second person, we get to meet the thoroughly modern Sara, a chocolatier torn between her husband and a fellow chocolatier who just so happens to be her husbands best friend.
Whilst in part two (by far my favourite part of the book) we get to meet nineteenth-century maidservant, Aurora, whose story, largely informed by a scandal, is narrated by an unseen party.
And finally, part three (written in what I felt was a unique if somewhat odd blend that was somehow part letter part play) in which we follow the journey of seventeenth-century chocolate maker, Mariana, who faces adversary due to her being female.
I don't know whether it was what I call the 'curse of the award winning novel' which often sees me, perhaps expecting too much, disappointed by award nominated/winning books or one of several other factors but to me whilst Desire For Chocolate was an enjoyable enough read it wasn't exceptional.
Beautifully written, lyrical and yet not too flowery. Perfectly translated. A good choice for chocolate connoisseurs and those into the whole 'foodie' genre so popular at the moment. Its just a shame that jumping around from the present day to the nineteenth century then back to the seventeenth century as it did I felt the story didn't flow as well as it might otherwise have done.
Then there was the different writing styles. Something that either appeals to readers or doesn't, I'm afraid I fall into the latter category and felt it another thing that impaired the flow of the narrative.
As for characters. Definitely interesting, well voiced and wonderful in their portrayal of the change in gender roles but it was only really Aurora that I found myself totally engaging with.

Decepción es la palabra, tal vez sin sentido. Porque que sinsentido este libro. Tres historias independientes, que tienen como punto de unión una chocolatera, sin más. Arranca con fuerza con una historia lacrimógena de amores y desamores, pasa a la parte central, sorpresa... Me lo acabo de leer y ni recuerdo de que iba, y finaliza con maestros chocolateros de Versalles en Barcelona. Sinceramente no he conseguido ver que relación había, es más, me parecen 3 historias inconclusas. No sé que me ha querido contar.

Dit is een mooie roman waarin de geschiedenis van drie verschillende vrouwen door middel van een chocoladekan terug in het verleden gevolgd wordt. Af en toe had ik het idee dat ik een Zafon boek zat te lezen; niet wat betreft mysterie maar meer wat taalgebruik betreft. Wie weet zit deze manier van schrijven wel in de volksaard. Zafon en Santos komen immers uit dezelfde streek. Alhoewel het verhaal in het heden begint, kun je het gerust een historische roman noemen want het grootste deel van het boek speelt zich in het verleden af. Een aanrader.

Relata 3 momentos históricos de una "chocolatera", que en realidad son 3 historias totalmente independientes. La primera me pareció la mejor, la contemporánea, ligera y despreocupada.

Книгата не беше лоша, интересни факти за щоколада и традициите му в Испания научих, но вървеше някак отсечено и въпреки връзката с шоколатиерата - накъсано една от друга. Първата сюжетна линия най-много ми допадна, след това начина на представяне на сюжета не бе моят...

I was expecting a little more love for chocolate and Barcelona, but there was only an objective view over the two. Characters do not have enough time to evolve and are left half empty.
