Excellent volume. Each chapter featured a major event. First the cast came to terms with Kouko and Banri dating. Then, just in case you were convinced that the story was a romance between those two characters, the very second chapter in the volume ended their first romantic get-together at his apartment with a sudden appearance by Linda. But the story is not about him and Linda getting together, either. It’s about Banri deciding which version of himself is in charge of his life: the old him or the new him.

In this volume, we discover that the old Banri occasionally surfaces to take control. The new Banri lives in fear of going to sleep to never wake up as his current self ever again. This makes his attempts to soothe Kouko’s fears disingenuous. He is deliberately hiding his past with Linda from Kouko in a form of denial. It isn’t too hard to see that the situation will come to a head soon. Having opened up his world to Kouko, she is beginning to notice that all is not right with him. The final chapter is a flashback to high school, giving us a peek into the dynamics of Banri and Linda’s unrequited romance as the different sides of Banri fight for dominance within his subconscious.

The art in this volume was excellent. Umechazuke continues to impress me with excellent facial expressions and human gesturing—making it easy for me to care about the characters.
