I was originally supposed to review this for ANN, but in the end we deemed it too raunchy for the site. This book feels like a guide for an unreleased adult visual novel about having sex with as many monster girls as possible - each entry for the 100 different monsters discusses how she prefers to "rape" or "assault" human men, focusing on how much the men end up enjoying it. While the full-color images of each monster girl on the left hand pages are quite attractive, most of the entries also have insert, sepia-toned images of the monsters having sex with men in typical hentai style, with plenty of viscous fluids. Genitals are drawn without censorship bars, although there is no pubic hair. (See Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape for why this is an issue.) The text mostly reads like the worst romance novel sex scene you've ever read, with the disturbing, and consistently reinforced, notion that human women do not enjoy sex and find male sexuality a burden, and thus are perfectly happy to allow monster girls to take over, even though it will lead to their eventual extinction. To say that this is outdated and offensive is an understatement.
Granted, I am not the intended audience for this book. But even if the issues I have with its depiction of female sexuality weren't present, this is not well-written and suffers from a severe case of masturbatory fantasy. Surely there are better done monster girl hentai stories out there.
I bought this because I loved the art. All of the monster girls are extremely well drawn. Some of the smaller monsters have very questionable side art but I still liked it overall. Then I decided to actually read the entries for each monster girl. Now I wish I hadn’t decided to read them.
In the lore of this book (yes lore) the monster Overlord is a succubus whose influence has lead to all other monsters needing human “essence” in order to survive (no longer killing at eating humans instead). It is stated that the goal of the Overlord is to turn all human women into monsters and all human males into incubi (humans can turn into monsters with repeated exposure to/sex with monsters). Several monsters are said to have jobs but most of them are said to be 100% focused on finding humans to have sex with 100% of the time. In fact the vast majority of the articles say that they achieve this through SA (but don’t worry the victim enjoys it?). At the end of the book it’s mentioned that the SA was a bad thing (shock) but yet at least they aren’t eating people anymore? The sheer amount of times that SA was mentioned in this made me supremely uncomfortable. I hated it. There was also a lot of talk of fluids (seeing as how that’s the main diet for a lot of these monsters) and I just hated that too.
The art is beautiful. That doesn’t make up for the content of the entries. Do not recommend.
It's a horny book about monster girls written by a guy for guys to fap over.
Art is cute. Writing is not so cute.
On the left side, you get some cute monster girl art - much approve.
On the right side, you get pencil-sketch hentai, and a fanfiction-y entry on how to get laid by said monster girl. Again, it is written by a guy aimed at guys. Female sexuality is clearly not this author's strong point or focus as all the monsters are hypersexual and all about raping and hunting men for "their essence."
But really, what do you expect when you pick up a book covered in huge titties and a warning for "mature monster girl fans only" ?
I quite enjoy the dirty art style, but the descriptions of every monster are completely unremarkable, essentially saying the same thing; "this monster desperately works to make her husband sexually satisfied in whatever depraved way he desires" and "this monster rapes but men totally love it because reasons". Its highly problematic. I can suggest this book for the art, but that said, I can't endorse much else about it.
The artwork really is some top tier stuff and they do know their audience. If you like monster girls, and I mean REALLY like monster girls, then this might scratch that itch. I appreciate the world building with sections that give a bit more background on the world this book is set in. The downside is it's way too focused on sex when it frames itself as a kind of nature guide. I suppose it is appealing to that kink but still not great for the format.
Adults only geared toward monster girl fans. 18+ only. This is a great encyclopedia if you interested in learning about a world where monsters rape men and the current overlord in charge is a succubus. Which is why the lust went way overboard. No story here in this book.
The wife bought me this about a year ago as a gift, and I had been reading a page here, a page there ever since. I finally sat down and really started reading it, and I was honestly conflicted as I read more and more of this.
I really enjoyed the lore aspect as the author delved into each monster and their mating tendencies, but I found myself at times feeling as if I were betraying my more feminist ally side with the act of enjoying reading the material. I could see a lot of my more active feminist friends condemning this book because of its portrayal of monster women being shown as nothing more than sex fanatics, whereas I could see others making the argument that its empowerment for the monster women to be taking back their power with sex. The constant back and forth I felt did mar my enjoyment in reading it.
The artwork is very stunning and well done, and I really enjoyed the vibe of it being a sort of diary entry the author took while exploring the world of monsters. The little side notes were most entertaining!
I still plan to read the second volume. I just hope that I can come to some form of agreement with myself so I will be able to actually enjoy it.
This felt like a chore to read. Bought it on a whim to research the monster girl trope for my own work, but didn't get much out of it. The illustrations are cute, but the monster descriptions/behaviors are extremely repetitive. There were a few creative ideas that were interesting, but they got recycled to the point of losing all original novelty. Perhaps I shouldn't be judging a smutty book by the same standards as other books, but I really did expect something more creative and out there. A part of me feels like the illustrations came first and the writing/ideas second. For this reason, buy it if you like the illustrations and skip the rest.
I have to hand it to this guy, he's brave for publishing this. But he has like 3 kinks total and it does get pretty samey by the end. If you like noncon that becomes consensual in 3 paragraphs, animal girls and femdom then this is for you. The art is very cute though.
I didn't read into this before opening it. The artwork is well-done, but the depiction of a lot of these "monsters" - like fairies - as being incredibly child-like made me very uncomfortable.
It was OK ONLY because of the number and variety of monster girls it contained.
The book was centered around sex. At times it got UNCOMFORTABLY raunchy, even for me. Instead of every entry focusing on how that species likes to have sex I would have liked information about where that species fits into monster society and notable members of that species.
I'm under no illusions though. A sexual fantasy is exactly what the MGE series is meant to be, but I believe it could be more.
That being said, I will continue to buy the next books in the series as they are released in the states in the hopes of more nonsexual information about the world and its inhabitants.
Good read and generally it was what I expected it to be. Art is definitely nice to see and I enjoy the explorative approach it takes rather than presenting itself as a novel.
Awesome book with incrediables story, amazing art work (and highly sexual) if you read the book to its true entirety you'll find its more the just porn, it creates a world. of an amazing RPG like style with an entire history. but if you're just reading the be turned on .. You'll realy get your rocks off.
