After the terrible battle against the Enhanced Ones, Seven and Corin find themselves on the run. With the Enhanced closing in, Seven knows they need to find other people on their side. So, when the opportunity arises to join the Zharat, one of the last surviving Untamed tribes, it seems like the perfect solution.
But the Zharat lifestyle is a far cry from what Seven’s used to. With their customs dictating that she must marry into their tribe, and her relationship with Corin breaking down, Seven knows she has to do something before it’s too late. But that’s easier said than done in a tribe where going against the rules automatically results in death.
And, with the Enhanced still out there, nowhere is truly safe for the Untamed--least of all for the most powerful Seer in the world... and Seven soon discovers just how far people will go in order to ensure that she’s on their side in the War of Humanity.
Battling against the emerging web of lies, manipulation, and danger, Seven must remember who she was meant to be. Her life has never been more at stake. Nor has humanity itself.
A YA Mad Max! Fragmented is a great companion to Untamed. Middle books in trilogies can sometimes be let downs but this was a thrill ride that continued to develop the characters in interesting ways as well as the wider dystopian world Dyer has created! I had no idea where the the plot was going to go and Seven continued to be the kind of kick butt YA heroine that I love. I can't wait for the final installment!
Whereas Untamed, Madeline Dyer's debut novel, was a character-driven YA dystopia, the follow-up Fragmented feels more like a drug-induced mind trip -- which is simultaneously frustrating and enthralling for the reader.
This book takes place in the immediate aftermath of Untamed, but before long, we're left with protagonist Seven and Corin -- on the run, on their own. They wind up with a band of people named the Zharat, but what starts as a simple case of finding refuge with potential like-minded allies turns into something else entirely... and for roughly 250 pages, you'll find yourself thinking you know what's going on, only to discover you're nowhere near right.
Along the way, Seven is convinced she's going mad, and I sometimes felt the same way as I navigated through all the twists. Going back and forth in trying to determine which characters can be trusted and which ones can't, pushing through the occasional tough-to-read passage (there are a couple of them, fair warning), flipping pages through the ending in which the futility of everything becomes crystal clear... even as the answers became clear, more questions popped up.
Fragmented is an adrenaline-packed read, and Dyer once again establishes her ability to create vibrant, memorable characters. That ability is what makes this a great read, even if you find yourself flipping through pages on numerous occasions asking yourself "WTF?" -- and you will be doing just that.
The lack of clarity is occasionally frustrating, and there is a cliffhanger (but it's abundantly clear going forward that there are two more books to come in this series). Fragmented will keep you turning the pages, will keep you guessing.
And when it's over, you'll be asking yourself when the next one's coming.
I don't think I've ever wanted to punch an entire group of people as much as the Zharat. Great job Madeline for giving me someone to loathe as much as Umbridge
I think it’s safe to say that Fragmented was just as gripping, maybe even more so, as the first book. The thing that makes Fragmented as good as Untamed, I think, are the Zharat. “Developed” societies are a rare thing in Seven’s world — you’ve got the Untamed and the Enhanced, but that’s about it as far as any societal norms go — so when they initially stumble upon the Zharat, Seven and Corin (and Esther, too, though she’s pretty out of it for much of this book), they find relief in finding other Untamed like them — Untamed who, at first glance, try to live as normally and neatly as possible. That quickly appears to not be the case. I find the Zharat, their society, and all of the thought that must have gone into their world building really, really interesting. They’re a fictional group of people, and yet they read like a real society — albeit a pretty deranged one. Though I, obviously, do not support their ‘customs’ in any form, I find the whole belief system built around this fictional group extremely intriguing. From their (sexist) classing system, to their marriage arrangements, to their treatment of female Seers — I loved and hated it (in the best way possible), all at the same time. And, even though we learn so much about the Untamed and the Enhanced in book #1, I love how the rivalry between these two groups just continues to build and expand. There are so many things that I wouldn’t have even considered thinking about in the first book — all of the different Gods and Goddesses, for example — that are included in Fragmented, and I just... loved the detail a whole lot. Even the way that Seven says “Oh Gods” instead of “Oh God” — I know they’re just little details, little nitpicky things, but it’s little details like that that make a book great. Especially when said book is part of a series, and those little details flow naturally from one book to another. Fragmented also has just as many twists and turns as Untamed did, and Dyer does an *excellent* job of keeping me at the edge of my seat. Even though I’ve only read the first two books so far, the Untamed series brings a whole new meaning to plot twists and turns. It’s like one big literary rollercoaster, and I am most definitely strapped in for the rest of the ride. Overall, I think this series is a definite must for any dystopian fan! The structure of Seven’s world is incredible, and among some of the best dystopian world-building I’ve read. Of course, I would start with book one, but Fragmented has proved itself to be just as fantastic!
Absolutely adored this instalment of Dyers follow up to Untamed, yet again 7 really is put through a hell of a time, but it makes me love her all the more, this time it’s a patriarchal society that they choose to join up with, the author writes this so well again as I was so angry, uncomfortable and just so creepy reading this part and 7 trying to get her voice to be heard. Such a wonderful commentary on this world we are in and the patriarchal structures we face, especially with the focus on feminism and women’s rights in the last few years and decades/centuries !! A fantastic sequel, strong, a great journey and answers a lot left unanswered in the first book.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Madeline Dyer did it again, I couldn't put the book down! The book had twist and turns and it was a great thrill ride! the ending was unexpected in a good way. I cant wait to read the third book and see what happens next!
DISCLAIMER: I was fortunate enough to be able to beta for Madeline Dyer’s newest book, Fragmented. The book is the second in the Untamed series. I beta read, yes, but I feel that makes me harsher than most. I helped her rip the book to shreds. I didn’t look for comma mistakes, well, I did, but I looked for plot holes (of which there were none) and places where her characters were in different locations suddenly (which happens to us all). At the end of a lengthy and grueling process, 99.999% she did alone, some zillion edits before she let anyone see it, she had an amazing, dark, twisting YA book that overshadows her first one. That’s saying something because her first book is one of my favorite YA books. Now, you can go and look on Twitter and see that we are friends. I promise you that doesn’t color what I’m saying. I’ve had friends publish things that I just gave 3 stars and a short review to, saying some obscure comment about the decency of the story. I don’t go out of my way to review things unless someone asks it of me, which she didn’t. I just felt, that before the book is even pre-sellable, people should hear one woman’s opinion about what it sure to be a top YA book of 2016.
P.S. The Release Date is September 7, 2016
On to the review:
Fragmented is dark, both in tone, setting, and content. Not so dark that it can’t be considered YA, mind you, or at least, the new definition of YA. Madeline pushes the envelope to the point of almost opening but stops herself just short. It is still a YA though it’s obvious she could ease into adult fiction without problems.
The settings in Fragmented are grounded even though it is a fantasy and dystopian novel. You’ve been to these places, seen these things, only you haven’t. She spins them just enough to be foreign and engaging. Sometimes I’d stop and think, I’d like to be there. The waterfall is the place I most want to visit (you’ll see when you read it). As she paints the locations into views, she has you breathe them in. The dust gets caught in your tired and overworked lungs, the water chills your dirty, sticky skin, the rock scrapes against you, ripping your clothes. No moment is wasted though every moment isn’t spent telling you how to feel. Sometimes, you are just lead to the water, others your head is forced so hard into the lake you can’t breathe.
That brings me to the best part of her book: tension. My God Madeline Dyer can write some tense scenes: have-your-muscles-in-knots-for-days tense. The best things about the piano wires that lie within her book, just waiting to be plucked, is you never know which you’ll get: Hitchcock or Saw. Better yet, you don’t care. Some authors are better at one, you crave only the implied or need the gore because the implication just isn’t enough. Dyer is much better than all of that. She writes in paragraphs, she writes in lines, staccato overwhelms your brain, fluidity stretches your nerves. It’s all different, and yet, all so stressful. The book isn’t full of tension though if that isn’t your thing. She has something for everyone.
The story is vivid and bright, unique more times than not. When it isn’t, I wasn’t bothered. Some things felt necessary, new or recycled. So as not to spoiler the hell of out things, I’ll just say a little more on this (as we are MONTHS away from the book even being promoted heavily). This book is heavy. It’s not a fun romp in the hay, or an easy cozy mystery, both of which are great genres that I love reading. It’s a fast-paced, unstoppable, unputdownable book that will have you keeping the light on until late devouring the last words. Fragmented is a journey that picks up where the first book left off and leaves a massive cliff hanger for book 3 (can you imagine my struggles, having so much longer to wait than everyone else?). The travelers, as it were, have their minds made up of what their plans are, but things go awry, as life often does. Seven and Corin find themselves in such horrible situations that tear them apart, but also bring them back together in a way that only trauma can. Even though these are fictional scenarios, the reactions are very real.
Seven, the main character of the series, is very flawed. Madeline gives you all the reasons in the world to love her, but also to hate her. Seven isn’t made out to be the hero 100% of the time, nor does Dyer try to keep her spotless or likable. There were moments that I would have been fine if she died, but it was on purpose. The calculated moves were that of a chess game. Other characters, Corin in particular, have more than just one motivation behind their actions. It makes them grounded, whole, relatable. I’ve known that person, well, minus the whole having to kill someone or fight off spirits... but I’ve known the stressed out guy who does all he can to do what he thinks is right and try to win the girl. More importantly, I’ve watched him fail and succeed a hundred times in real life. Then, when put in a scenario such as the Untamed series, Fragmented especially, I can see him acting just like that. He waivers, he stands tall, then he falters again. He’s real. Madeline has characters that will break your heart, enrage you and have you laughing out loud (inappropriately so, but still).
Absolutely brilliant. What a great 2nd book this was. So many twists and turns I didn't see coming. I am desperate for things to go right for Seven and Corin. Raleigh is a man I love to hate! The storytelling and world building is done so well it leaves you feeling like the places are real enough to visit. I cant wait for book 3!
Another wonderfully written book by Madeline. It's one of those books that keeps your heart racing and your eyes peeled in the darkest of night. It's exhilarating, making you want to read more and discover what happened next. The vividness and all the editions makes you feel like you are a part of the book- I even felt like I was going to font. I cannot wait for book three to be released!
Awesome read, well written with a great plot and characters. This is an edge of your seat kind of read. There's magic, pain, love, betrayal, emotional. This book picks up where Untamed left off. It is fast paced, has unexpected twists and goes from Dream land to real world. We are introduced to a new group called the Zharat which is very different from what Seven knows. Highly recommend this book. I can't wait to read the next book! I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This continues Seven and Corin's adventures to keep the Untamed lives free of the Enhanced. The Zharat have survived by hiding in a volcano's corridors and have evolved a society that is hard, male-dominated, and scary. I admit I was often frustrated with Seven. She seemed to be incredibly clueless. When I read a book, I put myself in the place of the character and I know I would have done things differently. Of course, that's easy for me to say as a reader. :) Truly an edge of your seat read that will draw you into this world to see how Seven and Corin getaway to fulfill her roll in saving humanity as she knows it. I look forward to the next book in this riveting story of the future.
This a great sequel to Untamed. The plot twists were mindblowing at times and upsetting, to me, at times. Fortunately, I trust the author to bring me through this and deliver as she always does. Fragmented is the second in a dystopian story that describes a world divided in two. Both books will keep you on the edge of your seat rooting for the main characters and wishing the villains evil. You won't be able to put it down...I promise. Seven is a compelling character and Dyer's style of writing makes you feel like you're in the center of the action with her. I highly recommend picking up a copy for yourself.
Many series suffer from a weak second novel. But Fragmented is the Empire Strikes Back here, and is even stronger than the first.
I was captivated by the world that Dyer created in Untamed: a future where most of humanity live with chemical 'augmenters', and those who refuse the drugs are hunted down. Unlike most dystopias I know, there's this incredible spiritual element: Seven, the protagonist is a seer capable of speaking with them through dreams. The spirits have a massive, sometimes physical effect on the land, able to change it or roam it at will. All in all, this is astounding worldbuilding which made me desperate to read Fragmented.
Fragmented has a much faster pace because of the short timeframe. While Untamed took place over weeks, months, Fragmented is the course of just a few days. Seven, Corin and Esther are all that is left, and decide for their safety to band with a massive tribe called the Zharat. But just because they're Untamed does not make them good people.
The Zharat are an incredibly patriarchal society, and part of what I loved about Fragmented was how on edge I was the entire time. To put it simply: these guys are absolute creeps. To keep humanity going, their only weapon is their babymaking. Women are nothing but a tool in this regard. Seven's strength and abilities are put to the test when the Zharat community refuses to treat her as a real person. I was cringing the entire time they were with them.
The character growth is also pretty incredible here. Seven is not only trying to make her voice heard in this new community, but also trying to keep her relationship with Corin alive and healthy. Not to mention that her Seer dreams are strangely stopped now that she's with the Zharat, and she can't mention that fact to anyone, because Zharat culture sees Women-Seers as demons. Not to mention the guilt she feels from the last battle...
We also learn more about the place of the Spirits and Gods within not only this culture, but the war itself. At the climax of the book, I was gripping the page as things became clear and the mysteries unraveled. I wanted to scream at the book.
This book has honestly been very difficult for me to review with a level head, because I'm still shattered from the ending. I just cannot wait to get my hands on Divided, the next book in the series!
In my review of book one, Untamed, I likened the story to that of Delirium by Lauren Oliver and The Host by Stephanie Meyer with a hint of magic. Whilst that is still true, this story is so much more. The writing style flowed effortlessly, was richly descriptive, yet full of twists and turns that kept me guessing and I could never have anticipated any of the outcomes. Some of the characters I actually wanted to reach in and knock some sense into! I read Fragmented within a day and I cannot get over the ending! I have been sitting on the edge of my seat throughout this exhilarating story and now I have to purchase and start the next in the series immediately. Every dystopian lover should read this series and everyone new to the genre should start here. Brilliant and unputdownable!
** I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This in NO WAY affected my opinion of the book or my review of the book. **
This is the second installment in the Dystopian Untamed series by author Madeline Dyer. And Boy oh boy, you will not be disappointed! There are so many twists and turns. You start out with Seven and Corin at the battle between the Untamed and the Enhanced. When they come too, it's not pretty. These two characters, have lost so much, and Seven is lost in her grief, they manage to find Esther Corin's sister, she's badly wounded. But the 3 take off. Seven thinks she's going crazy seeing her dead sister, because her grief for her brother is so much. They do manage to find a some men and Seven helps save them. But it may be the worst mistake they could have made. From there it's non-stop questioning what is going to happen to the trio and who is on their side. Seven is actually starting to question her sanity and abilities. Because she isn't having any. (I seriously wanted to scream at many points in this book because Seven was doubting herself and she is so strong! I couldn't figure out why she was! I was getting mad) Living with the Zharat is not what they expected. Corin is not liking how Seven has given up, ( and neither have I!) But for the life of her Seven can't put things together. And from there with the Zharat, it's non-stop drama, and twists and turns. Tons of questions and in the end your mind will be totally be BLOWN! So I can't tell you any more. Because you have to read the book. Because Seven is the key to it all, and I am just waiting for the next book because I HAVE to know what happens now! Madeline Dyer really knows how to write a story that leaves you guessing and then drops a bomb! It's amazing, I can't get enough of the Untamed series!
Another 5 star book by Madeline Dyer! I could not put it down. And the ending, I absolutely need book three immediately. If you like dystopian fiction, this is definitely the series for you!!
FRAGMENTED by Madeline Dyer is the second in her Untamed series. I read the first for review and was drawn into Seven's world right from the first line. I was excited when Dyer asked me to read the follow up for review, and I wasn't disappointed!
We're immediately drawn back into this world that Seven is trying to navigate, a world that is both familiar and yet foreign to both the reader and to Seven. It feels so relevant in 2017--a world of outsiders and groups who are trying to find their place. Dyer has done a great job at keeping things realistic while providing magical twists and dark, dangerous turns.
Seven remains a strong and capable guide throughout the story, allowing the reader to become part of the action through strong writing and well-rounded character development. Seven doesn't always make the decisions we want her to make, but she never makes them lightly. And with such a large cast of supporting characters, grounding us with a strong female lead like Seven allows us to fully emerge ourselves into the magic and difficulties of this world without getting lost. She has secrets, and with every turn of the page, the reader both wants them to be revealed, and wants her to keep them hidden. It's this pull from both sides that makes the story so enticing!
This isn't just an action packed story, however. Seven and Corin are a strong team, and a strong couple. While nothing comes easy for them, the bond between them strengthens throughout the tale, even when we think all is lost. I loved this aspect of the book, and thought Dyer's treatment of their relationship was unique and so interesting.
It's a long book, at over 400 pages, but the pacing always feels smooth enough and fast enough to keep the reader interested, without losing the details. If you loved UNTAMED, you'll want to pick up FRAGMENTED right away to discover more about the world and the people Dyer has created. And just where will she take them next? I can't wait to find out!
I got a free copy to leave a honest review. The whole story is like a hurricane passing through, finally Seven thinks she is safe when they encounter the Zharat, but nothing is further from the truth. At arrival they only met by hostility all around them. More over they kill whoever they think doesn't fit in this society. As I finished the book, I was left a bit shaken of the violence against woman in a patriarchal society. Especially when Seven comes from a more of matriarchal society where woman are the seers. The book is ended on a cliffhanger, will Seven survive this betrayal and can amend things that went horribly wrong? Will anybody trust her again?
Great great great!!!! Ok so I loved this book a lot more than the first book. The writing is terrific and this was one of those books where I actually had to force myself to go to bed! The only issue I have with the main character is she is so reliant on other people. What I do in fact like though is the author didn't make a ninja kung fu fighting warrior out of a nobody, but she relies a little too much on the male (Corin) to rescue her. Which I do appreciate the fact that the author does point that out in the book and Sev even says that she needs to stop relying on other people. Total props there. So totally different setting in this book.... Not gonna lie.... I would HATE this place... and I am actually surprised she doesn't speak up more, and I wanted to high five Corin for calling her out on that…. I like this books series and where it is going. Total understanding of why Sev is important but not really clear on what Mister Raleigh’s intentions are, but I sense they are not good. I CANNOT WAIT for the next book!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was an exciting, and quite frankly terrifying, portion of this series. The new tribe they encounter and join out of pure desperation turn out to be crazy! I saw that aspect coming but not to the extent. And I feel like the ending of this book took me by surprise. I had my suspicions about one of the final reveals (trying not to give away spoilers) and while I was kind of right, I wasn't and I love when a book can give me a proper surprise. I am excited to read and be thrilled by the next installment!
I received a copy of this book from the author, Madeline Dyer, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Madeline!
Whoa! Untamed the first book in this series was full of twists and turns. Fragmented, the second book in the series, did not disappoint as the story of the Enchanted and the Untamed continue with Seven.
In Fragmented, it starts off with Seven, Ester and Corin after a difficult battle. While, our main character, Seven deals with some interpersonal issues, she decides in is in their best interest to find other Untamed. When they find an ancient tribe of Untamed, things start to get tricky. This book is darker then Untamed and full of even more surprising, while also touching on some relevant concerns/topics in today's society. I can NOT wait to get my hands on the last book.
If you read Untamed, enjoy darker novels with dystopian elements and typical Good vs. Evil novels and need a decent cliffhanger to move you on to the next book, Fragmented/the Untamed Series is for you.
This is the second instalment of Madeline Dyer's Untamed Series and it begins immediately where the first novel ended. In this book there is less interaction with the Enhanced but instead we learn more about the Untamed - specifically a group of people/society called the Zharat. Initially I was quite excited to meet these new people and had high hopes of them being key in defeating the Enhanced. However, as the novel went on and the focus stayed on the Zharat, with little to no interaction with the Enhanced, I started to get a bit fed up with them. In fact I grew to hate them.
I feel like this novel moved a little slower than the first and I probably would have preferred less focus on the Zharat and more on the Enhanced. The novel has helped the story move on a little but I feel like there was a lot of filler that didn't really add anything to the story. I did however love the cliffhanger and again Dyer has left me with so many unanswered questions that I definitely have to read book three!
HOLY MOLY! That was fast! Considering that it’s been almost a year and a half since I read the first book, I confess I did wonder how much I would retain. Luckily Dyer doesn’t dither around with recaps and exposition. FRAGMENTED basically picks up right exactly where UNTAMED left off, and drags the reader further and deeper into the fantastic world of Untamed versus Enhanced. Dire threats, terrifying prophecies, an entire group where there once had been so few... and betrayal that runs deeper than Seven or Corin can ever imagine. I found myself utterly fascinated with the new characters, and eagerly blowing through chapter after chapter, late into the night (WHY DO I KEEP DOING THAT TO MYSELF???) until it all came crashing to an abrupt ending that I was hoping the characters would avoid, leaving certain poor souls in uncertain peril—and the fate of the Untamed world hangs in a precarious balance! Very well done, and now I am incredibly motivated to seek out the next book!
I was lucky enough to act as a beta-reader for Fragmented, and from the first page I was once again catapulted into Madelaine Dyer's amazing world of prophetic dreams and shamanic omens in which the last untamed humans live. Continuing from where Untamed left off, this book expands the cast of the first book to include a variety of intriguing new additions, as well as introducing a mysterious community that has managed thus far to evade the Enhanced. The plot is once again fast-paced with many an unexpected turn, and the developing maturity of the heroine, Seven, is bound to captivate every reader! I can't wait until the third installment!
I was so glad that I could pick up the next book in this series and give it a read. The story picks up from the end of the terrible battle. Seven and Corin, as well as Esther are desperate to find a safe place to be. With a rush of bravery, Seven jumps in feet first and finds what she believes to be that safe space. But is it really safe? The story was engaging, well-written and kept me turning the pages late into the night. I loved it, and am so glad that I already have book three on my Kindle so I can continue this amazing story! Highly recommend for those who love a dystopian with a mythological twist!
The second instalment of the Untamed series certainly took a very dark turn. It's scary the way the horribly misogynistic culture of this other tribe of Untamed was so believable. What a horrifying place to live, more for the attitudes than anything. I felt for the main character much more in this book than in the first. Everything that happens to her is so unfair and I really wanted things to turn around for her. I found myself pleading out loud for things to change and shouting 'no' when things went wrong. Now I am desperately awaiting the next instalment!
