I read this book years ago and it is a page turner. I remember thinking, "What is this crazy old coot gonna do next", several times while reading this.
The plot is this: Married Mayor falls in lust with seventeen-year-old innocent, Sheila. He has murder on his mind when a sweet little old lady and wifey get between him and his Bad Desire.
I would rate this a two except for the OMG ending. I kind of hated reading it, but it did keep my attention. The Mayor, married and responsible, sure he is, fall "in love" with a 17 year old girl. First of all, let's get this clear, what he calls love is actually an obsession and lust. And the girl's love is more genuine but she is in love with an image of herself that she sees in his eyes and the man she thinks he is. She is missing a lot of information and is gullible and naive. The Mayor goes on a major crime spree in the pursuit of 17 year old Sheila, but no one knows this. Detective suspects it but is outwitted. Wife figures everything out, but she is still in love with her husband, whatever that means at this point, and believe me it is nothing good. Wifey makes a plan, hubby makes a plan, Sheila sits in the middle of these scary adults like a tasty meal. The ending? Wait for it...!!!
Okay so I liked this book, it had its moments I just didnt think overall it was as good as it could have been..okay so this is the story of Henry Slater, a married man and Mayor of a town in California with a perfect life who seems to have it all, all of it as well as a huge obsession with seventeen year old Sheila..It starts off innocently enough as the older man makes more and more of an effort to buy her things, see her, treat her special and her grandmother is not having any of it. It then becomes Henry's mission in life to see her, to have her and if her grandmother is the only obstacle well he will just have to find her way around that, and he does...the book picks up from there as Henry will stop at NOTHING to make sure no one knows about him and Sheila and that no one ever finds out..It is thriling and suspenseful I did enjoy that however I didnt feel a big reveal with the ending and I wish it was a little more exciting, less drawn out..good read though
This book was awesome! The fact that the killer sacrificed his whole life and career just to be with a teenager, is pretty messed up. He killed 2 people and the last person he tried to kill was his wife, but his wife got the better of him in the end. Also the fact that the girl he was obsessed with was killed in the car that he blew up himself thinking that it was his wife in the car is delicious irony. I just love the realism of this plot and how fleshed out the characters are. This book was amazing in the sense that multiple perspectives were at play and their individual motives displayed. Awesome book, can't wait to read his other book called Wedding Night! Definitely a strong recommendation for this author.

This was such a page-turner and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Suspenseful and thrilling- Oh, the twisted minds of Henry Slater and his ‘naive’ wife. The ending felt a bit underwhelming and unresolved but regardless, it was a good read!
Mayor Henry Slater may have bitten off a little more than he can chew in his latest extramarital affair. He has promised 17-year-old Sheila that he'd protect her and that there are no impediments to their relationship. But there are - Henry's wife, Sheila's grandmother and a police officer. To fulfill his obsessive desire, Mayor Henry Slater will become a very resourceful and very dangerous man.
I really enjoyed this book. Gary Devon is a new author in my TBR pile and I give this book an A+! It really showed how desperate and dangerous people can become with their obsessions.
Editorial Reviews Publishers Weekly Devon follows his praised first novel, Lost , with an account of forbidden love and serial murder that thrills from intriguing start to chilling finish. Wealthy, powerful Henry Slater, charismatic mayor of a Southern California town, and his wife, Faith, a devotee of charitable causes, seem pillars of righteousness. But Slater is obsessed with gorgeous high school junior Sheila Bonner.
