Angus Farseek #1

Untimely Agent

Rate this book
Angus Farseek is snatched away mere seconds before his unfortunate death. Teleported by strange creatures called Quick Slivers to another dimension, Angus discovers he has earned the honor of becoming an Untimely Agent, one who roams across time, safeguarding it from those dead set on unraveling the cosmos. But all is not as it seems with his newfound station, and he is shocked to find he has numerous family ties with time travel, one of which seems to be working for the other side.

Alongside a teenage girl his daughter's age and a rogue Quick Sliver, he's flung into the timestream well before his training is complete. Overwhelmed and desperate to get back to his family, he must take action even if it tampers with history itself.

What dire conspiracies will he uncover? What damage to the timestream can he possibly inflict? And what exactly does the essence of H. G. Wells have to do with the caretaking of all things chronological? UNTIMELY AGENT is the first of two books that will dazzle readers with time travel trickery and mystique.

Should Angus Farseek have been on the icy road that night? No, but his thoughts were on just driving, putting space between he and home. Never realizing that he might never get to go back there. Angus lost control of the car and just before he should have plunged to his death, he was surrounded by glowing little beings he would learn later were called quick slivers. They somehow transported Angus to another place, surroundings that were completely unfamiliar and confusing. And that is where his adventure began.

Small town 1950s:

Angus learns that he is to become an Untimely Agent or UA, policing the dimensions of time to make sure everything is as it should be. But first he must attend school to learn how to be a UA. Angus is forty two years old, old for an agent. It doesn’t take long, though, for the questions to start to add up. He has more questions than answers. Something just doesn’t seem right. He also soon realizes that he is not the first Farseek to be called into duty as a UA. It seems several family members either have served or are serving.

“What was it with the Farseeks and time travel? Was it something in our blood? Our genes?”

DINOSAURS:

Angus has barely been on campus for two days when there is an attack and he is flung, along with his little rogue quick sliver and another young girl, into a battle against those who seek to upset things. He travels through several different dimensions of time seeing and experiencing things he might rather not have seen. But Angus is determined to fix things. His goal is to somehow eventually get home, right before he ever got into that car, to get his second chance to be a better person, a better man/father/husband.

“It felt too soon. I wasn’t even an agent yet. I was adrift in time with no specific agenda, certainly none sanctioned by the UA.”

time going backwards

This book was quite the adventure. In his flashbacks to the kind of man Angus was before his accident, I wasn’t very impressed. But he did surprise me with his determination once he found himself in the situation he was in. I have to admit, this isn’t my normal genre of reading. But if you are a lover of young adult or middle grade science fiction with lots of adventure and time travel, then you will love this book.

You think you have trouble keeping track of time? Angus Farseek’s time was actually only seconds away from being up when he is teleported to another dimension of time and space. No he did not go to the Twilight Zone, but trust me; his experiences would make a good episode! His mission, with no option to not take it is to be an Untimely Agent, a protector of the timestream and its undisturbed continuum. Yes, there are evil forces wishing to wreak havoc for their own gain. This is Angus’ story, as told by Brian Clopper in Untimely Agent, the flagship novel for the new Angus Farseek series.

Follow Angus as he is thrust into chaos and danger as he discovers another dimension where good versus evil battle on. With his training far from complete, he is forced into action, ill prepared and filled with questions, doubt and worry. All he wants is to go home, but is there a home to go to anymore? And is that a future version of his daughter over there? What is she doing here? Why does it seem she is rooting for the bad guys? They are the bad guys, right, what if the Untimely Agents were the bad guys? What if Angus manages to make a bigger mess of time than it is? Hadn’t he always heard that to tamper with anything in time the consequences could be grave?

From Brian Clopper’s fertile mind, a tale of epic proportions is evolving as Angus, his buddy, the Quick Sliver and unlikely allies along the way struggle to maintain time’s line, all while meeting quirky characters along the way. Chuckle at Mr. Clopper’s ability to play with words, to add his own quirky touch to each page and to never, and I mean never let up on his blistering fast pace! Hang on tight, it’s “time” to let go of reality for a while. Take a jog on the quirky side, prepare for a few snickers and lots of confusion and fun!

I received this copy from Brian Clopper in exchange for my honest review.

Angus Farseek is an ordinary man snatched moments from death and thrown into a bizarre "afterlife" of time-traveling agents. There's no way out; he either accepts his new role like everyone else, or he returns to normality... where his life expectancy is probably about one more second of freefalling off a cliff.

He doesn't want to train to be an Untimely Agent. He's not interested in policing the universe and preventing Absurdists from screwing with time. He just wants to go home to his wife and kids. But if sticking around at the university for a while and going to a few classes will help him escape, then so be it.

As usual, Brian Clopper's imagination is boundless. I'm willing to bet there are no other creatures remotely like the Quick Slivers, fluid creatures that dart about and transport agents from one time and place to another. And they talk with a British accent!

The first half of the book is set in the university, and there are shades of his brilliant Irving Wishbutton for those who love that series. But then things go "pear-shaped" and Angus finds himself in a situation more akin to the Back to the Future movies.

This is the first of a 2-book story. Meeting his relatives is a mind-bender, but in a good way. It's never confusing, but boy does it make you stop and ponder the ins and outs of death and time travel.
