Firepods, magic staffs, a city in a giant flower and doctors using spiders to check if your neural impulses? Let’s give credit were it’s due. Whittemore certainly made an original world.
I think my only problem with this book is that it all fell a little flat. From the dialogue and plot to the characters and writing style. The plot was basic, although the twist in the end did make me bat an eye (ok, gasp) and the writing style wasn’t amazing but still got it done. I think the main reason why it fell flat was because you didn’t really get to read Megan or Ainsley’s thoughts, just watched their actions, which made it hard to care for them and understand why they acted the way they did in some situations.
Plus, they acted like toddlers most of the time. Someone says “Don’t touch!” and Ainsley wants to touch. Yes, it’s a new, amazing world but would you really want to touch every stupid thing? In a world where they use spiders to assistant doctors? And it’s a world of magic too, so it’s not just going to shock you like if you touched an electrical outlet. No, it might turn you into a toad. Megan wasn’t as bad, but they both acted immature, especially around each other.
Overall, this fell into neutral territory. I enjoyed it, and can see me rereading it someday. I would probably recommend to my friends.

This was the second time that I read this book but it has been a long time since the first reading. Really didn't remember much of the details so it was like reading the book for the first time again.
This is not usually my pick of a genre to read but it is a book for our book club this month.
It is always interesting to go to a different world and where you have to learn about their ways and reasons. Having travelers from our world certainly helped to explain their world to the readers!!
Classic storyline - power object is in the wrong hands and the good people have to get it back.
Nice characters and nice storyline. It is certainly nice to escape through a book and this book fills that niche!!
This book is suspenseful and funny in a teen-ager getting transported with best friend/dude who i grew up with but dont have a crush on, to a new world where magic exists but has completely different rules that the usual waving of the wand while saying ABRACADABRA!!!
Spying on an elderly neighbor leads main characters Aislyn and Megan into a world of magic, intrigue and secrecy. Paced very well, and a great intro into the trilogy.
