I've read a few of this authors previous books so I had no hesitation in reading this story.

This is a well written mystery. Melinda can see visions of the future. When she goes into business with Nathan she ignores her friend Jacks advice not to do it. Should she have listened to Jack? What secrets is Nathan hiding??

I read this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. The twists and turns kept on coming and had me gripped.

A great read. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author and this series. Loved it.

Josie's Review

Dark Perception by Alexandra Weiss is a mysterious read with a hint of supernatural set in historical downtown New Orleans. I am not a fan of supernatural usually, but in this story, the author completely had me glued to the pages. The story is told in Melinda’s POV. I want to say that this story had me to stumped, there are two male characters in this story that I just did not trust, Jack and Nathan, which kept me twisted up.

Melinda is a unique character and I have mixed feelings towards her. She is musically talented and also physic, but she makes poor decision when it comes to men. I mean can’t you see that coming? She is an interesting character and difficult in her own way. She wants to be self-sufficient, self-confident and find a job that will cover just the basics to get by. She does not tell people their future for her self-righteous gain but to help them out. She has two best friends Ellie and Jack of which Jack is really in love with her.

So, in walks Nathan into her life wanting to give her a job as his own personal physic. Strange right? Immediately, Jack thinks there is something wrong with Nathan’s need to hire, Melinda. There was a connection between Jack and Melinda, one that she chose to ignore but was very much present throughout the story. Despite the warnings from Jack, Melinda goes in into a business arrangement with Nathan. One that will require more than she bargained for.

You know how your mother always tells you to beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing, well that is how I saw Nathan. He was way too perfect. Red flags and warning bells were going off start from the start. Nathan has a dark side and for seem reason Melinda was drawn to it. The longer she was in his presence the more he dragged her into his world. The more Melinda starts to spend time with Nathan and the high society of New Orleans, she starts to learn about the many secrets they keep. Jack and Nathan are keeping huge secrets from her as well. Secrets that will have her second guessing everything she thought she knew. This story has some serious twist and turns, add some ghosts and yeah nothing at all is what it seems.

I really adored the relationship between Ellie, Jack and Melinda. I found it to be realistic, funny and engaging. The characters and plot are well written and had me very emotionally invested in the story, I was even nervous at the mention of the ghosts. The way the author describes the atmosphere around Melinda when there is a supernatural presence around her was very well documented. When I was reading the story, I knew something was going to go wrong. I was not sure who really was the bad guy but as the story played out and I saw it unfold I felt helpless. If you like a good mystery with a twist this is the book for you.

I was hired to proofread this book. Because I have proofread for Ms. Weis in the past, she probably suspected that I would also review, but it was not part of our agreement. I simply review every book I read. If you feel that my connection to the book makes my review suspect, so be it, but this is my honest review.

This book brought out the hate in me. I found one of the characters absolutely despicable and spent quite a bit of time wishing bad things would happen to him. I really didn't like how he treated Melinda at all. In spite of that, I found the sex scenes rather steamy.

Dark Perception felt almost like it was part mystery to me, feeding me small nibbles of information at a time, just enough to make me crave more without ever leaving me feeling sated. The tidbits of info provided built to a bigger picture, helping me in my quest to solve the mystery. Although I basically figured things out before the main character did, mostly, my knowledge was hard-won and satisfying. And there were still a couple of things that I did not see coming.

Overall I give Dark Perception 4 out of 5 stars because it kept me turning pages to see what would happen next.

wow so many twists and turns that I did not expect. Dark Perception is hot and full of drama and excitement. Each turn of the page brought something new to the readers. Alexandrea Weis is very detailed and descriptive with her writing which kept me entranced.

I loved Jack's character and wish there was a bit more of him. Nathan I wanted to strangle from the moment he was introduced. I really loved Madeline and Ellie's characters, especially together they were funny. There was so much that surprised me in the book that I wont giveaway, mostly the haunting, so didn't see that coming. I really can't wait to see what is in store for The Corde Noire Series, def one of my fave reads this year!

I was given this book in exchange for my honest review. This is the first book I have read by Alexandrea Weis. This is definitely a dark romance and if this is not your cup of tea please to not read this. Melinda has a gift of seeing the future. When Nathan Cole finds out he wants her but only for her to help him with his business. The more time that passes the more the connection between them becomes apparent. But can Nathan make Melinda his with the visions she is having. I would recommend this book and look forwarded to reading more from this series.

Mysterious! Tense! I am becoming addicted to Alexandrea Weis’s books. My personal preferences pull me to read more standalone books or I wait for the entire series however, I do make an exception occasionally. Ms. Weis doesn’t have long waits between her installments so the characters and plot doesn’t get blurred or meld with other books I’m reading. The spacing of her episodes is close enough that I'm comfortable reading and waiting.

Dark Perception is a little mysterious with that lovely supernatural air of New Orleans flowing through the story. Melinda Harris has the perfect New Orleans combination of musical talent and psychic powers. As strong as her gifts are she still has a touch a naiveté about her and, in my opinion, this is the reason she makes so many bad choices in men.

Jack Deron is Melinda’s good friend but he wants more. Melinda feels the pull but doesn’t trust Jack and she doesn’t want a bad relationship to spoil their friendship. Ellie is Melinda’s female friend. She is the friend that will tell it like it is regardless of whether you want to hear it or not. Finally, there is the sophisticated, successful Nathan Cole. He wants Melinda as an employee, advisor, and lover. Melinda decides to take Nathan up on some of his offers but the question is…does she really know what she is getting herself into?

The characters are developed perfectly. There is growth but still a little of the unknown left to discover. I have a feeling that Nathan is going to be one of those really bad guys that I love to hate and that’s OK with me. The interaction between the three friends is authentic and endearing. Even with the paranormal flavor I never felt the urge to roll my eyes. The characters and storyline are written in a way that pulls out emotions from the reader.

I adore the way this story is progressing. There is a feeling of dread that builds with the story and yet there is also a hopeful air at the same time. Both of these feelings bump together and make me anxious for the next installment. Per Alexandrea Weis’ website http://www.alexandreaweis.com/#!media... the next book is planned for release in May and two additional books will come out in the following two quarters.

I can’t wait to see what will happen. I know it isn’t going to be pretty but I’m positive it is going to be great reading. A must read!

The author, Alexandrea Weis, has a hit series on her hands with this series if Book 1 any indication. This book will have you laughing, crying and sitting on the edge of your seat while praying for a happy ending. Melinda is working in New Orleans’ French Quarter as a street vendor telling fortunes, along with her best friends (one of which is Jack who truly loves Melinda). Nathan walks into her life and quickly discovers her powerful insight into reading people and seeing into the future (she has what many call “The Gift” or “Visions”).

Nathan sets out to win Melinda over and hire her to “read” people and business ventures for him during business meetings. But that’s not all he wants, Nathan wants Melinda mind, body and soul. Melinda believes she has finally made it. She has a new job, working for the sexy and powerful Nathan Cole and has a nice new apartment uptown. As any girl would, Melinda starts to fall for Nathan against the better wishes of her friends, especially Jack. Are her friends right about Nathan or just jealous? Is she doing the right thing if so why does she feel so strange and why can’t she read her future with Nathan? And what about all the crazy visions she suddenly starts having that make absolutely no sense to her?

This is a 5 Star; 2 Thumbs up; Must Read ( a win win win) and this reader can’t wait for the next book in the Corde Noire Series

Intriguing mystery with elements of the paranormal, it wasn't what I was expecting at all. Melinda was born with the gift, she can see and feel things others can't. All though she considers herself a musician first, she reads fortunes to make extra money, but more than that she does it because it helps people. Nathan Cole is a client she reads for regularly, but he quickly becomes more when he offers Melinda a job as his personal psychic. Despite the warnings from her best friend Jack, she takes the job with the mysterious and alluring Nathan Cole. Despite the fact that they will now be employee and employer, Melinda and Nathan can't fight their attraction. But, Melinda soon realizes that maybe she is in over her head. There is so much more to Nathan than even Melinda can't see.

This twist filled story takes place in New Orleans, and the way the city is described it almost becomes another character in the story. It is the perfect back drop for this suspense filled mystery. I can honestly say this book kept me guessing until the very end, and the ending left me breathless! This is the first book I have read from this author, but it won't be my last. I can't wait for book 2 in this series!

Uniquely Suspenseful
Melinda is a struggling Tarot card reader in Jackson Square in New Orleans, desperately yearning for a better life. She dreams of the day when her knight in shining armor will come in and swoop her away and she will never have to worry about side jobs to make ends meet.......
Nathan Cole has his sights set on the red haired psychic beauty, but are his intentions as honorable as he says??
Regardless of the warnings from her best friend Jack, Melinda take a leap of faith and enters into a business agreement with Nathan and together they try to get a read on his business associates to make a huge deal go through.
Unbeknownst to Melinda, Nathan may not have the purest of intentions when it comes to Melinda and his likes in the bedroom.
This story has many twists and turns and had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book....
I may have even been a little spooked while reading late at night alone............
This is definitely a must read and I look forward to reading the next installment!!!

Visions of the future, not your future but the future of others. That is how the "gift" works. For Maddie, this "gift" was a way to make ends meet as well as a curse. She is an intriguing character, complex in her own way, and full of visceral emotions that come with just scraping by with little income. She craves the independence and security that comes with having enough to cover expenses and actually wear new clothes. She is not a fortune hunter, but she is hungry for more than what she has been able to scrape by.

I loved Jack! Always available to help her and loyal to the love he feels for her. Isn't it always the nice guy who is just there, the one who does not get the girl? You will have to read this story to find out. Just know that all that glitters is not gold... fool's gold attracts but it is not real. The desire to be loved and cared by someone is a real human need. What happens when that turns sour?

No place in the world could possibly be the backdrop for this story other than New Orleans. The mysterious, balmy and laid back way of the Big Easy is the perfect backdrop for this story full of greed, passion, and revenge.

This is the first book by this author that I have read (although she has quite a backlist). What a great read! Melinda has gifts...one is her musical ability, a great piano player. Her other, she has visions. This is how she pays the bills. Jack has the same gift and has been trying forever to get Melinda to be his. Enter Nathan...he makes Melinda an offer she cannot refuse. He wants to hire her as his personal psychic, so she can help him continue to succeed in his business. What could go wrong there? ALOT! Melinda moves in to the apartment next to Nathan and the visions begin. Are there ghosts haunting the place? Are they trying to give a message? Is Nathan who he claims to be? Will her life ever be normal again? Will Jack ever speak to her again? Secrets are revealed and the truth will not set her free! I loved the story and the characters. I teared up and I yelled at the characters too. The story flowed nicely and I just couldn't put it down. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

This book was interesting. I could feel that the author had a love for New Orleans that I felt shined through when details of the town were mentioned. I'm not sure I really liked Melinda, I understood her desire to want a better life but she went about it in a very gold digger kind of way. Everyone she dated had potential to put her in a better position until Nathan Cole who was successful. Her friend was there for her through everything and loved her forever but she ignored him and his feelings for her until she saw that he had more going for him than she originally thought. For a mind reader and someone who can see spirits she was so clueless and ignorant as to what was happening I definitely grew frustrated for her.
Nathan was dark, calculating, and twisty and kind of fascinating. His character made this book have a more Dark Erotica feeling than BDSM but the sex was mostly consensual. The whole Corde Noire society wasn't well shown to me in this book which makes me want to read the next book a lot. Reviewed for HeadTripping Books by Alisha

This was a really good book! Well, how can you really go wrong when you mix BDSM with a little paranormal???

First off it's set in New Orleans which as we all know if the hub-bub of any and all things supernaturally freaky. That's where you will find Melinda Harris, a good girl with the gift of seeing into the future. Or as her grandmother called it the gift of "dark perception".

The plot ...

One of Melinda's customers, Nathan Cole, offers her a job that she can't refuse. Jack, Melinda's friend who also happens to be in love with her, warns her not to get involved with Nathan. Of course Melinda doesn't listen to Jack and decides to persue things with Nathan and let me tell ya'll, things just ain't how they appear to be ,,,

Ok so this is one of those books that the less you know about it, the better you'll enjoy it. I can't say that this book is perfect because there are some bumps in the writing style, plot and character and story development. BUT ... the mix of mystery, sex and spooky makes it a definite page turner with a haunting ending.

This is the first book in Alexandrea Weis's Corde Noire series. While each book can be read as a standalone this book kicks off the mystery storyline that follows in each of the following books. Melinda Harris has a the gift of seeing the future, or the dark perception, a talent that Nathan Cole seeks to use. At first the attraction for Melinda to Nathan seems to be what she wants, however he wants to possess all of the young woman. To say that Nathan is an awful man seems too kind. As the story progresses the reader sees just how horrible he is.
Woven against the tapestry of her native New Orleans, Ms. Weis tells this story as only she can. She pulls the reader into the spirit of the Quarter and the wonders found there, both paranormal and actual. The characters and the plot are well defined and the bit of paranormal that is thrown into the story only intrigues the reader. While this story is complete with a HFN ending for Melinda, it sets the stage for a wonderful mystery in the rest of the series, which I cannot wait to read.

Another great book from this author!!!
Melinda is a great girl, a bit naive, doing the best she can trying to get by..She is a great pianist and she read tarots..That’s what pays the bills but she truly has a gift..dark perception or more to the point visions of the future.
She has two best friends..Jack and Ellie.
I totally love Ellie..a bit crazy and blunt!
Jack.. I didn't know much about him so couldn't decide..
Nathan comes waltzing in to save the day.. or better yet to offer Melinda a great opportunity and a better future!
But..and this is a big BUT...nothing is as it seems..Both Jack and Nathan have secrets..If you add strange visions to the mix, a high society with even more secrets and certain preferences of someone..well you are in for a ride..
Couldn't put it down and even when it ended I was still getting goosebumps.
Can't already wait for book 2 in the series!

Everyone should be reading this one it really opens your eyes up about life makes you think are you in it for money or for love? Always follow your instincts if its not right than "RUN"...That is not what happened with Melinda, she knew she was in trouble she knew she had to escape but where how and when that was to be determined and by who..Could anything more happen that no one was seeing or understanding..Was Nathan who he claimed to be or was he exactly what everyone including Melinda thought he was..Sometimes we can be blinded by love or something more powerful..Curious? Intrigued? Well just get the book and find out trust me you will want to know the answers to these questions and so much more..

Dark Perception lives up to its title for sure. It does have that tinge of dark that makes you sit on the edge of your seat as you read and makes it impossible to put down until the very last page.

I really loved Melinda. She has this power to see things, but is blinded in her own life. I had a bad feeling about Nathan. Just a sense that he was just too good to be true. I don't want to ruin the story by telling to much. Just know that this is a story with some serious twists and turns that will definitely mess with your mind. I enjoyed it.

I give Dark Perception 4 hearts!

I actually finished yesterday but no time to write or update. I didn't want to put this book down. It has it all, mystery.. supernatural.. and erotica. The author feeds you just enough info to always keep you hooked and wanting more, while keeping you guess and keeping it unpredictable all at the same time. Huge fear if you ask me. Was my first time reading this authors books, and I'm definitely diving into book two now while I'm on break from work!

I won this great book through a good reads giveaway-around Mardi Gras and it arrived with a couple of strands of Mardi Gras beads (which I thought was a cute touch)-sorry it took so long to read through it:). Although a good story, the author has a very wrongly skewed vision of what a D/s relationship is, how it works, etc. It's hilarious she doesn't think a Dom can be in love or have emotions attached to his sub. I also hate to br3ak it to her that what she is describing is not a Dom sub relationship l, but a Master slave one. Doms do not make every decision for thei subs, nor do most practice the dynamic 24/7/365.

Melinda's psychic abilities have always been a curse as well as a gift. It's that gift that drew Nathan to her. He's handsome, charming, and rich. All the things Melinda thinks she wants. What she doesn't see is his cruel, possessive, sinister side, until it's too late. Did she ignore the signs too long?

Dark Perception by Alexandrea Weis opens up a new series called "Corde Noir" with a solid 5 star introduction to this twisted world of "The Black Cord Society." The title references the psychic gifts our heroine -Melinda Harris- has inherited from her grandmother who raised her to understand her abilities were a gift and gifts must always be shared, not used for personal gain. The title alone evokes a feeling of foreboding which continues throughout the entire novel.

Combining horror with the erotic takes a particular skill which Alexandrea Weis excels at during the course of Dark Perception's twisted tale of love, premonitions, and the old adage of 'being careful what you wish for' since it also teaches a harsh lesson in the end.

Melinda Harris was raised a simple country girl with four overprotective older brothers on a farm where she was never quite comfortable. Her grandmother had come to the States from England; Grandma Teresa taught Melinda many things about culture, the world, a life outside of being some farmer's daughter or wife. It was her grandmother's influence which encouraged her to strike out on her own to get to New Orleans where she set up in Jackson Square reading cards, catering to the tourists without fleecing them, and occasionally indulging her real passion which was for music.

"Grandma Teresa believed those who saw things through to the end could always be trusted to keep their word. Quitters were liars and cheats because if they couldn't be honest with themselves, how were they going to be honest with you?"

A deep desire to make her departed grandmother proud of her leads Melinda to accept the unorthodox offer of Nathan Cole to be his personal psychic. She is offered the deal of a lifetime by a man who comes to her rescue when her latest travesty of a lover publicly humiliates her. Nathan is sexy, successful, and sincerely interested in Melinda in a way she can feel even without her dark perception coming into play. Nathan gives her a new apartment in his complex which is not-so-affectionately coined 'The Shallows' which is in the Warehouse District. The name comes from the history of the place as a slaver's auction house where many shallow graves were found which were believed to be the graves of slaves who died before they could make it to auction.

Sending a psychic to live in a place built on shallow graves should sound like a bad idea---because it is and watching it get darker and deadlier throughout the work is more than half the fun. As Melinda falls deeper under Nathan's spell, agreeing to be more than his pet psychic but to also wear his collar and be his actual pet, it's impossible not to want to warn her of some sort of danger even if one has no idea what the danger is or where it'll originate from along the way.

Sex becomes an addiction for Melinda and Nathan as they use one another in different ways. He wants her powers to help him with building his empire; she wants the luxurious experiences he offers her which she'd never really thought she could get in her lifetime. They run the gamut from vanilla to light bondage to some really impressive toy play so if the erotic part of the erotic horror construct is not for you? You might want to think twice about reading this book since it does not shy away from the naughty bits.

Nathan Cole is a dominant businessman who oozes confidence and success. It's easy to fall under Nathan's spell regardless of any warnings from anyone else. He's absolutely delicious from the moment he shows up.

Jack Deron treats Melinda like she's his little sister as he also works the square as a psychic with his own gifts which are not quite as developed as the ones Melinda seems to sport. He's not as traditionally handsome as Nathan and not nearly as refined, but he has a lot of love for Melinda -who he calls his Maddie because she's always mad at him about something- which is very endearing and he's charming enough in his own way.

Dark Perception is not a love triangle in the traditional sense. It's more a book which asks the reader to consider who the leading lady should choose: the man who can give her everything from a worldly view or the man who'll love her more than anything.

Alexandrea Weis has a lush writing style which showcases a deep love of New Orleans as well as a familiarity with the city which only comes from those who have lived there. Her characters are rich, three-dimensional people with flaws and faults and feelings. The secrets of the 'Black Cord Society' aren't all revealed which leaves the reader anxious for more yet the storyline for Melinda is resolved enough to give the reader a satisfying sense of closure for her chapter in the overarching plot.

Haunting as much as it is horrific, Dark Perception is the kind of book which stays with the reader long after the last page has been turned. It's the kind of book which should be measured in what one gains from reading it rather than in stars because it takes the reader all the way up to touch them while dangling from the moon on a silver thread. If you only read one paranormal romance this year? Dark Perception by Alexandrea Weis should be it. That's how tight the Corde Noir sinks in around the reader's neck: it's ruthlessly unforgettable.

•••••

REVIEW: DARK PERCEPTION is the first installment in Alexandrea Weis’s adult, contemporary, CORDE NOIRE dark erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on the members of the elite and dangerous BDSM Corde Noire Society. This is wealthy businessman Nathan Cole, and pianist/psychic Melinda Harris’s story line.

NOTE: The story line contains questionable sexual situations and triggers that may not be suitable for some readers.

Told from close third person perspective (Melinda) DARK PERCEPTION follows the building relationship between psychic Melinda Harris, and the man who would destroy her heart-Nathan Cole. Melinda is a psychic who ‘sees’ the future (and ghosts), and Nathan is a regular customer who wants Melinda for himself. As a wealthy businessman in New Orleans, Nathan ventures into the property game where he believes Melinda can ‘foresee’ his successes and failures. What ensues is Nathan’s seduction of Melinda-a woman who is about to lose control of her life.

The relationship between Nathan and Melinda is quick to develop. Nathan is a Dominant and he demands submission from Melinda in every aspect of his life, and herein lies the proverbial ‘elephant in the room’. Melinda quickly learns that Nathan is not the man she presumed him to be, and in this, our heroine finds herself in a dark and dangerous situation as it pertains to her safety with the man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are graphic, intense, and not without some questionable acts of power and control. Nathan’s temper pushes the envelope of consent.

DARK PERCEPTION is a dark, erotic romance where one man’s obsession with power and control is ill-fated, ruinous and tragic. The premise is fascinating but alarming; the characters are controversial including a heroine with questionable desires and a lack of self-preservation. The romance is dark, destructive, and doomed. DARK PERCEPTION is a dramatic look at the ultimate cost of power and control.
