I’m being stalked by a dead man. I’ve been living in the shadows for years, running from a past I didn’t choose, running towards a future that can never exist.
My only means of survival?
My fists

I try to flee, but I am captured by Chase's sultry lips. He says he can protect me, but I know that’s not true.
And after one night of passion, I have to make a choice—do I bring him into my nightmare, or do I push him away and save his life?

I can’t stop running.

I can’t escape the past.

I can’t stop giving myself to the one man that I never should have touched.

I don’t deserve him.
It’s better that I keep running, because if I don’t, his life will be in danger too.

And that's a risk that I'm not willing to take.

This is a standalone book about an MMA fighter and her means of trying to survive with a dark secret. It has a HEA.

The synopsis for this book is what intrigued me and I had high hopes of it being a great, gritty read. Unfortunately the book just didn't pan out that way.

From the very beginning, when reading the prologue, it felt a little all over the place, which didn't help by the fact that there is very little sense of time. Going into chapter one it was hard to understand exactly how much time had passed and this was pretty much the case throughout the book.

The characters weren't developed enough for me. Their back story was more confusing than anything else. I couldn't understand what the deal was with Kayla, her Mum and Dad and I don't mean just by withholding certain things in order to create an element of suspense. This eventually became clear though, but by then and due to a lack of empathy with the characters, I'm afraid it was a case of too little, too late. They displayed very little personality that allows me to have some sort of feeling towards them. The antagonists didn't make me hate them and the protagonists certainly didn't make me love them.

The story itself was actually, in its basic form a good idea, but unfortunately it just wasn't executed in a way that made me believe what was happening was real. There were far too many discrepancies for me and that meant that I was unable to be drawn into the story. It also felt a little rushed, flipping from one scene to another and that may explain why certain things weren't detailed clearly.

Sadly this just wasn't a book for me, but I wish the author every success for the future.

“‘Do you pity me?’ I gazed into his sea-blue eyes as we were face-to-face. He chuckled a bit as he kissed my tears. ‘How could I pity someone so beautiful as you?’”

4 broken, wounded stars! Beautiful and emotional

I don’t want to give too much away but if you aren’t a lover of taboo books, then this isn’t the book for you. But if you are then this book will touch you in places a book never has. Chase and Kayla are both deep characters with a lot of spark. I loved reading about their past and how they come together in the book! The storyline was well developed and fast paced! Great book!!

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Extremely muscled, shirtless male. Synopsis is interesting enough to pique my curiosity.

Looking Deeper:
First-person POV. Author may be British or Australian... I found a few non-American terms early on in this story, ie: car park (parking lot), tap (faucet) that seemed to vanish as the book progressed.
After escaping a abusive domestic environment, Kayla finds refuge in fighting - in and out of the ring. Chase and Kayla met in high school and shortly thereafter, his dad met her mom and they eloped. After high school graduation and acting as virtual strangers, Chase and Kayla find themselves at the same college and confession deeply hidden feelings for one another, but happiness is fleeting when the past comes back to haunt her. These are New Adult characters, and although Kayla's been through a lifetime of hurt and is much more world-weary, they both have tendencies to make rash, immature decisions.
Chase is a good lead male, but I was not too fond of Kayla and/or the choices she continued to make. Their chemistry was, most of the time, weak and lacking any tangible spark. Secondary characters covered a wide variety, both likeable and not. Dialogue and interaction were age-appropriate. The plot, in itself, moderately interesting. The flow is very nice. Predictability is low. The entire back story provides the current conflict and takes until the end to resolve. The conclusion is solid and satisfying.
There's one point that stuck out to me near the end (departing at the airport, 92 percent), Kayla refers to Stephen as her future stepdad. Um... he's ALREADY her stepfather and has been since marrying her mom all those years ago. I think Ms. Tale meant to say future father-in-law.

I received this for an honest review. This is the first book I have read of Foxy Tale. When I first started reading the book for some reason I had assumed that it was going to be were the step-brother was the MMA fighter but that was not the case. This book is a taboo book where the step-siblings meet late in life.
Kayla had been through so much in her life. Her and her mom were running from her abusive father. It is not like they could report it, no one would listen since her father was on the police force. Kayla was now living her dream. She had always dreamed of going to Stanford. Now here she was attending college and enjoying her stepbrother who was going to the same school. Her heart must of dropped the moment she saw her father had found her. Now she had to run and leaving everything and everyone behind.

I cannot imagine when Chase realized that she was gone. He was so in love with her. Part of him died when she left, not knowing where she was or what happen to her. He could not understand why his parents did not want to find Kayla. She would not just leave him like that, at least that is what his heart was telling him.

It was bad enough to have to go to the underground fighting match with his friends. He had no interested in seeing woman fight. Just was not his thing but here he going to one with his friends and seeing the woman he loved in the ring fighting. It had to be a shock. He felt betrayed, hurt, and confused. He wanted answers and was not going to leave without them.

I loved Reg he was Chase’s best friend and was a voice of reason when Chase needed it the most. There are some things revealed. A huge dark secret out that is hard for Chase to wrap his head around. This secret makes he feel so much anger. After everything that Chase finds out will he be able to forgive Kayla? Loved the book and loved the ending.

This was a very emotional read. It deals with child abuse and domestic violence. It is very intense as it deals with Kayla's past and its affect on her present. Kayla takes up fighting because of the past. She uses it as a way to protect herself and free herself from the abuse. Along the way she has left Chase behind because her past caught up with her. He finally finds her and wants to hate her but when he learns her reasons he cannot hate her but wants to help her.

Kayla is scarred but she is strong. I like her. I also liked Chase and can understand his feelings. When aspects of Kayla's past are revealed, I came to strongly dislike people from her past. The story is realistic. I loved the intensity of the writing as well as the changing first person point of view of Kayla and Chase. It made me feel that I was in Kayla's shoes.

While this story left me drained, I would read Foxy Tale again. I liked her writing.

Copy received in exchange for an honest and Unbiased review

this was emotional roller-coaster for me. It deals with abuse , fighting past demons.
Kayla is wanting to take her life back, so she takes up fighting to help protect herself and as therapy, but when someone special from the past returns can she protect her heart?
chase has been looking for Kayla, he wants answers to why she left and left him behind. He wants to hate her but can't when the truth is told.
