Alison is one of the rare people in her hood to make it to adulthood without getting swept up in the tide of crime, prostitution, and drugs. She works at the neighborhood’s only bookstore, which is in failing health structurally and financially. Her best friend from childhood, Lucy, works at the local group home and provides Alison with well-needed moral support from time to time.

One fateful evening, a well-dressed white man comes in to Alison’s store and, after browsing for a bit, asks her out on a date. She falls for his charms, but her best friend Lucy warns her that he might not be all that he seems.

Wonderfully Written

The title of this story had me thinking that this story would be another poorly written and poorly proofed piece of forgetfulness. But I was pleasantly surprised to find a very well written short story. Congrats to the author!
