From her Ravelry Profile: I have been knitting and crocheting forever. I am a mother and grandmother, and a great grandmother. I design, teach, and write books. My first book was published in 1978, and I just completed my 19th book In addition to the books, I have 2 independently produced video’s/dvd’s, and 3 self published entrelac crochet patterns. My flicker name is MHDesigner. I love it all!
I am a member of the CGOA, The Happily Hooked on Crochet chapter in CT, and a member of The Big Apple Knitters in New York City.
Borrowed this from the library, I will be purchasing a copy. I love how each square is presented and the different types of blankets that can come from the same type of square. Highly recommend for a newbie (like me!)!!
There are so many amazing patterns in this book. I love how the Yarns they recommend are very affordable and easy to get a hold of. I already have 4 blankets picked out. The instructions actually use the most common stitches.
10 Granny Squares 30 Blankets: Color Schemes, Layouts, and Edge Finishes for 30 Unique Looks by Margaret Hubert is a lot like 10 Granny Squares 30 Bags: Purses, Totes, Pouches, and Carriers from Favorite Crochet Motifs. It’s a collection of 10 granny square patterns, each of which is then made into 3 blankets. The blankets use different yarns, borders, and layouts, so while the granny square remains the same, you are able to get unique looks.
The granny square patterns include skill level and instructions written in US pattern abbreviations and international stitch symbols. There are 2 beginner squares, 1 advanced beginner square, 2 easy squares, and 5 intermediate squares. Each square pattern also includes a flat lay photograph of the square. After each square, 3 blanket patterns are presented. Each blanket pattern includes an introduction with a large picture, a supply list (including yarn brand, colors, and weight, and hook size), gauge and size information, and a skill level. The blankets are written in US pattern abbreviations and also include international stitch symbol patterns for the borders/edgings. There are 3 beginner blankets, 9 advanced beginner blankets, 3 easy blankets, and 15 intermediate blankets. Most patterns also include at least 2 more large detail pictures of the blankets. When relevant, an assembly diagram is also included.
10 Granny Squares 30 Blankets ends with a 3-page Techniques section that includes written explanations and photographs for the adjustable (magic) loop, 4 types of seams, and blocking. There is also a pattern abbreviation glossary, an international stitch symbol key, and conversion chart for US to UK pattern terminology.
The patterns use vibrant, contemporary color schemes and the photography is well styled and modern. If you love granny square collections but struggle with matching borders to squares or choosing colors, you’ll find a lot of inspiration here. The book is a paperback so it doesn’t stay open while you crochet, but there is a lot of eye candy inside so it is definitely worth it.
Full disclosure: A free review copy of 10 Granny Squares 30 Blankets: Color Schemes, Layouts, and Edge Finishes for 30 Unique Looks by Margaret Hubert was provided to me by Quarto. Although I accept free products for review, I do not accept additional compensation, nor do I guarantee a positive review. My reviews are based entirely on my honest opinions.
Margaret Hubert published her first book in 1978 and according to Google has published 22 more on both knitting and crochet and she loves yarn. She has been quoted as saying “I love all aspects of both knitting and crocheting, love working with yarn of all kinds. When I am playing with yarn and creating a new free form design I feel just like an artist, painting with my yarn instead of a brush.” Margaret also loves the portability of a granny square and has some intergenerational projects on the go with her mother, her daughter and granddaughter – in her words ‘a golden thread between the generations’. This is a delightful collection of granny square patterns with each one used in three different blanket configurations. What this book teaches you is that by simply changing the colours, layouts, yarn weight and borders you can create a very different blanket with the same granny square. As a person new to crochet the benefit of using these granny squares is perfect as getting the gauge or tension exactly right is not absolutely necessary for a blanket so these have been great for a beginner to work with. So far I have completed one blanket and have two more on the go – though all with different squares and colours. My blankets are making great presents for my siblings and keeping my hands busy and my mind on creative projects has really helped to bring a little bit of joy while we have been in the longest lockdown in the world. There is a range of skill levels available in this pattern book so you can be a beginner or an advanced crocheter and there is something here for you. The end of the book includes a techniques section with written explanations and photos of all the seam options and how to work the adjustable loop as most of the granny squares in the book are worked in rounds. Each square has a written pattern and an illustrated chart and there is also a glossary of abbreviations and a key to international stitch symbols. Please note that these patterns are written in US pattern abbreviations. All 30 blanket patterns also have a blocking diagram so that you can easily make up the granny squares to the pattern. Hubert has many other crochet books in the catalogue if blankets are not your thing.
I've been wanting this book for a while now, so tonight I just went ahead and ordered it for my Kindle. The pictures are stunning! So colorful and well thought out to show all the beauty of any particular Afghan you may want to get started on. The instructions are very easy to understand, and she's even included the graph version if you're a crocheter who would rather make the squares that way. I'm more than happy with this purchase and can't wait to get started creating an heirloom to enjoy now, and pass down later.
The author, Margaret Hubert, has been in the crochet world forever. This book is clear and well organized. There are plentiful photographs and tons of stitch diagrams and illustrations. The granny squares are interesting and fairly different from one another. One thing that I don't care for is the color combinations! Wild or just plain ugly?
I have been through 4 or 5 granny square books and they just didn't suit me. This one did! I liked the squares, your color combinations look phenomenal and I'm putting yarn together in my brain. U am a certified yarn hoarder and can think of several I could do. Thank you for this book.
I really enjoyed the designs and easy to follow instructions. The beautiful photos make you want to crochet everything blanket. The color combinations and patterns are inspiring. Written and chart instructions given, borders included.
Love the combinations! Can't wait to try them out.
Very creative arrangement of colors and the edge finishes add beautiful interest to each piece. It's helpful that pictures, diagrams and patterns are included and even enlarged so the instructions are easy to follow. Lovely🌺
I really loved how each square was shown in a variety of color and arrangement variations. I would never have considered how wildly different the same pattern can look with different styling. Came away with lots of great ideas!
Amazing designs almost brought tears to my eyes. The presentation was so organized, providing a picture, diagram and written version of the square. The color ways for each design beautifully depict the versatility of the motifs! Absolutely stunning!
I wanted to make more blankets and love granny squares but I couldn't find any inspiration. I found so many great ideas in this book. My energy, creativeness, and enthusiasm has been restored. I finally have more projects.
I LOVE this book! Am working on one of the blankets now. Look forward to making more of them. This is an easy to follow book of patterns with some great pics and wonderful color plotting ideas.
First, this was a Goodreads Giveawau (free copy) for which I thank GoodReads, the publisher and Margaret Huber.
I highly recommend this book for the many new and innovative ideas that a person can use and build on with their own artistic know-how.
For those who may think... seen one Granny Square, seen them all, you may be delighted to see Ms. Hubert's patterns. For me, I fell in love with her edgings which have always been a bit problematic for me.
As the title says, 10 Granny Squares, 30 Blankets, so there is plenty of choice and lots of fun ahead for you.
If you are a novice, you are included in the patterns and even the intermediate ones can be followed easily enough.
I look forward to referring and using these patterns many times.
I really enjoyed the concept of this book! You learn how to make one beautiful granny square and then have the ability to create a few different and very stunning afghans. The granny squares were all lovely and ranged from easy to advanced. The instructions were accompanied by a visual stitch chart too- which as a visual learner, I always find helpful. If you like this, I recommend checking out Margaret Hubert's similar book, "10 Granny Squares 30 bags."
Interesting designs, I liked how the author showed how color could change the feel of a design depending on what was used. Another book I'll have to buy or borrow again from the library.
