The format of this book is good, but the literary quality is atrocious. You can write simple prose without making the plots ridiculous and the dialogue super weird. The only story that had any good qualities was the Viking story, the modern time ones (especially the first) were unfortunately really bad.
I studied basic German some 25 years ago. I was losing it quickly due to lack of practice, and i wanted to improve it to be able to read some books i have. The stories in this book are quite simple but easy to follow, and i recovered some words i had forgotten and i learnt a lot more. A good bit of practice! Moving on to the next level.
I had enjoyed the way this books encourage the reader to proceed reading and delay the need to accurately understand each new word till end of chapter. The authors explain this method and it works for me. The amount of new words and the practical use of daily conversation is a great lesson in short form.
It was not anything too crazy. As for stories it was poor but i mean it's a language learning book so you need to put weird plots that don't make sense just to add a sentence you think is fun to learn. As for vocabulary it was fine I've learned a few useful sentence as well as words. P.s: but igotta say it was NOT fun to read.
Highlighting the important vocab and adding questions at the end of each story is useful, but the stories make absolutely no sense! Weird plots and ridiculous characters..
Great book for beginners (more for low-intermediate level). Stories are fun and short enough to keep you focused and curious to see what happens next.
I never studied German through any formal teaching methods, just from a bit of Duolingo and specially Anki. Added this book to read on Readlang and saw that I added about 100 unknown new words for each story, summing up more than 800 over the book.
Worthwhile book, I recommend it. Got the book from Kindle Unlimited for free.
Ціль книги - дати можливість читати німецькою читачам, із рівнем володіння мовою a2/b1. І це книга забезпечує і, в принципі, словник супер, але історії вже занадто ніякі, інколи важко читати. Я читав дві книги із серії винятково для тренуаання німецької і винятково, бо мав вже їх під рукою. Можливо краще було б обрати адаптований переклад чогось більш цікавого.
This book serves the purpose for the German A2-B1 reader of bettering their German comprehension. I think for that reason it deserves 5 stars and don't understand the people complaining about the literary quality. It seems Olly has written in very simple ways so you don't get lost and feel the need to translate words. I found that the way he writes does just that because his well rounded paragraphs allow you to figure out the bigger picture more easily which allows you to continue instead of getting discouraged.
