The sequel to Charlene Challenger's Aurora Award-nominated young adult novel, The Voices in Between, begins three years after heroine Adoni first followed Ritter, a piper, to the place known as the In-Between and defied its sinister overlord, Ansgar. Unable to find her way back, Adoni has given up the thought of ever rescuing the children she left behind. When she is finally reunited with Ritter, she coaxes him to unlock the portal, and together they return to the piper colony known as The Welcome. But they’re disturbed to discover their once arresting world has been decimated by the vicious Sylvester and his changeling army. Neither Ritter nor Adoni are prepared to wage war against him. Charlene Challenger is a Canadian writer and graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University's Acting Program. Her first novel, the young adult fantasy The Voices in Between, published by Tightrope Books, was nominated for the 2015 Aurora Award for Best Young Adult Novel and long-listed for the 2015 Sunburst Award Young Adult Novel category. Her most recent work, Keeper by Blood, was published in 2025. She lives in Cambridge, Ontario with her family.

I copyedited this book, so I'm not an unbiased source, but if you're looking for an urban YA fantasy novel for older teens (and adults!) with an awesome, butt-kicking female heroine, look no further than The Myth In Distance, the sequel to Charlene Challenger's Aurora-nominated The Voices in Between. It's a wonderful read and the novel is engrossing even if you haven't haven't read the first book. But do read both!
