Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

I enjoyed this manga very much, but this is how I imagine it was pitched:

“We’re gonna do a manga about a kid that gets saved from suicide by an angel, and the angel gives him special powers.”

“Sure, I’m with you.”

“And the first thing he does is go to see his aunt and uncle, who took him in after his parents died, and _____.”

“Dude, that’s messed up. So we’re talking lots of drama here, okay. Go on.”

“Then he finds out he’s in the running to become God, against a bunch of other humans who’ve also been given special powers.”

“There can be only one, sure, I like it.”

“But really all this kid wants to do is go to college and have a normal happy life. So he heads to college for his first day, and on the very last page of volume 1, ______.”

“Holy s----. We won’t be able to get the second volume out fast enough with a cliffhanger like that.”

“I know, right?”

“Green light. Get to work!”

“Thanks! You won’t be sorry.”

“Oh, but is there going to be plenty of T&A? Because we don’t think we can sell books otherwise.”

“Yeah, no problem, we’re already on it.”

Am I going to keep reading while rolling my eyes at the art? Yes I am, because of that last f---ing page.

From the creators of Death Note comes...another dark and edgy series! But this time with more boobs and death...well bloody deaths.

Mirai is just a dude who's ready to kill himself. Sounds simple enough. He goes to the top of a building, jumps, and is then saved by a angel. This angel gives him wings and arrows and lets him know he can use these different type of arrows to help him live a happier life. So when he uses a red arrow, which makes the person love him (for 33 days) on his aunt to find out the truth of what happen to his parents all hell breaks loose. Soon after Mirai is told by his angel that there are 13 people on earth who are candidates for being "god" and these 13 angels, her being one of them, were sent down to find the best suited by giving them these powers.

This is pretty dark series. Right away it starts off kind of simple and clean by as we get into why these angels are here, their motivations, and view points on life it all starts to make sense of what their true intentions are. This series is far more graphic than their previous work, showing bloodier deaths and lots of ass and boobs this time around. While a bit of a shock it does flow with the story. The characters haven't grown on me yet, and Mirai seems like a Light type character who hasn't gone fully bad. The ending is a huge cliffhanger and I am interested to see where we go from here.

A 3.5 out of 5.

An interesting set-up and strong art. I'd be more impressed if the moral questions and character interplays didn't seem extremely similar to those in the creators more famous earlier work, Death Note.

A depressed youth is saved by a morally ambiguous angel who gives him supernatural gifts that he must use as a candidate to become the next "god".

Platinum End has a pretty epic start but I'm not entirely confident in it's future. At this point it may decide to go straight into battle fantasy manga, rather than really focus on the story, and that would be a shame. But, we won't know for at least 2 volumes.

There was quite a bit of explanation on how this fantasy system works and what the rules of the competition are, so it doesn't have as much impact or flow as smoothly as you'd hope from a first volume.

It feels a little bit like a re-imagining of death note. [A comparison that they can't escape.] What if Light didn't go on a killing spree? What kind of world would he create then? I think it's an intelligent re-working of a fan favourite. And will create a different enough story from Death Note.

The concept bases itself in an idea that there are several candidates to become the next "god" and they must battle each other to find out who will be chosen. It is a pretty usual one that you'd see in shonen (fantasy battle) series like Shaman King, Hoshin Engi, Gestalt, and many others. So, if you liked any of these series, this might be for you.

However, as far as mood it might be a little darker than death note in terms of imagery, and it does deal with abuse, depression and suicide so if those are things that bother you, you might want to avoid this title.

Overall I enjoyed it! And, I'm crossing my fingers for the rest of the series.

I was mesmerised by its artwork, no wonder these mangaka are legends. The plot was okay, I was intrigued at 1st, but too bad it went downhill a bit. I like the main character, he's much kinder than the characters in Death Note. However, I don't like where the story is going. I will continue to read this though, 3.5 stars!

I kind of have a love/hate thing going for Ohba and Obata but the covers for this series are pretty and I'm a sucker for stories with angels.

There's probably going to be some twist that makes me throw my iPad across the room, but I'm willing to take that risk.

Also, if you've read or seen Mirai Nikki this story will seem familiar. Not a bad thing.

"...conhece outro candidato a Deus...".

Okay, I tried to lower my expectation since Death Note and Bakuman are masterpieces. BUT, of course I can't help expecting great things from this series. It's Tsugumi Ohba, after all!

At first, I was afraid that this series will disappoint me because it's like a lighter version of Death Note... isn't it? I'm afraid that Ohba is trying to repeat the success of Death Note by using an alternate version of shinigami, angels. BUT, I am extremely happy to announce that Platinum End doesn't remind me with Death Note at all!

I love how the main theme of this book heavily relies on 'the meaning of happiness'. And although this book seems lighter than Death Note, it actually isn't. There is a dark undertone in the form of the angels. I love how Ohba goes against the current in creating the angels. He created his 'own' version of angels, not the one that often depicted by mainstream media.

And not only that, I am completely satisfied by the story progression. I couldn't imagine that the story would progress into something like "that". And I am so excited to read the next volume of this series! Please Ohba Sensei, DON'T LET ME DOWN X"D Let me worship you till the end of your career!

The reason why I got to read this manga because I heard it’s going to be airing as an anime soon and the fact the author who wrote the well known“Death Note” series. I absolutely didn’t thought the story as well as character development was mediocre enough and the ending was goddamn awful like there wasn’t even a mention of the human population to disappear into thin air! I mean I really thought it was all about saving people and turning them into angels?! Cmon bro!

I even hated the fact our MC is a typical softie like I really wanted edginess from him, heck the author is better to just make every single main characters be edgy like Light and that would win me over lmao!

Yeah just disappointed…

Recensão completa no aCalopsia: Platinum End.

Platinum End. From the same creator team that did Death Note and Bakuman: Tsugumi Ohba, the author and Takeshi Obata, the illustrator.

Brilliant art.
Look at the perspective. Absolutely stunning!

If you're not intrigued by Takeshi Obata's art skills then I don't know what will.
But the story is also one you shouldn't miss out on.

After Mirai Kakehashis's family is killed in a car accident, his uncle and aunt take him to their home. But his life there is unbearable, losing all hope in life and on the last day of his middle school he jumps off of a skyscraper's roof. At the last moment however, the angel Nasse saves him and explains to him that everyone has the right to happiness. She equips him with special abilities and gives him the chance to give his life meaning again.

This was way better than I expected. This manga has a lot of potential. It's not too long and just recently released its last volume in English. Hope one of my favourite duos won't let me down.
