Today, more than 85 years after its inception, the Bauhaus style still emanates vitality. As a school that strove to combine applied art with both the fine arts and technology, the Bauhaus movement has outlasted all other trends in architecture and design. The present volume provides insight into the historical, cultural, philosophical, political and pedagogical background of the 1930's, when the Bauhaus was founded.

170207: not that i have finished this... more like decided to put it aside. the book is extensive, covers all disciplines, all history, all politics, of the Bauhaus movement. most of which i know as architecture, furniture, urban planning, utopian idealism to unify art and modern technology. know some personalities, moholy-nagy, paul klee, mies van de rohe, marcel breuer. of tableware know little, textile, photography, theatre, sculpture, music, print, theory, even less. so the book is only useful in some cases, better read elsewhere, but it does have photos, images, plans, designs, all large format. interesting to read how political they were by simply trying to work and design, and of course the aftermath of the names i know in architecture in the us such as architect walter gropius...

This is as comprehensive a history of the Bauhaus as one could wish. This modernist institution was a huge cultural force that probably did more to determine aesthetic and functional style in the twentieth century than any other entity.

The book consists of a series of essays, some of which are of more interest than others depending on the subject. (I enjoyed most those dealing with Klee, Kadinsky, Moholy-Nagy, and the teaching of photography.) The best feature of this book, though, is the wealth of well reproduced paintings, photographs and other artworks. There are also a number of casual black & white snapshots scattered throughout that are of more than passing interest.

Bauhaus was a very popular movement in the earlier part of the 20th century. Bauhaus movement was one of the most important modernist movements which simplified shapes into basic shapes of circle, triangle, rectangle, and square. I think this would be a good choice as a book as it would give a little bit different look at jewelry making for students, and they would be able to simplify their forms.

Delicious. Now go to MoMA and see for yourselves. Ok, you could go other places, but the MoMA has a great collection. Don't let all those Kandinsky posters in your friend's dorm room in college spoil the beauty and function of this subbacultcha.
