"The Mists of Osorezan" is a supernatural thriller set in modern Japan, with elements of both J-Horror and H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos! David Keall, a young British resident of Japan, finds himself attracted to his private student, Saori Yoshida, and becomes fascinated by the mysterious death of her sister during trials of the Tsuguru University Sleep Research Project. He enrolls in the same project to help Saori uncover the truth, but his life turns into a nightmare when his darkest dreams erupt into reality around him. Two mysterious strangers with paranormal powers arrive, offering help ... but can he trust them? Can David find his way back to normality - or will he be lost forever in the mists of Osorezan?
Thank you Goodreads Giveaway for this book. I really enjoyed this book. There is so much happening! There are mysteries to solve, magic, monsters and ghosts. It starts out on the island of San Michele- the resting place of the people of Venice. Next we journey to Japan to a dream research facility at the Tsugaru University Hospital. This is where a lot of the story takes place. We also meet a group that is known as the Thirty Six-a secret society I call the Watchers. I don't want to give away to much but I think if you read this book, you will be glad you did.
A plague of nightmares is spreading across the world ... In Japan, David Keall is worried about his private student, Saori. She is grief-stricken over the mysterious death of her sister in a Sleep Research Project. Trying to help Saori and her family, David volunteers for the program and the revolutionary new software they are testing. Instead of finding answers, his darkest dreams take on form and reality, haunting him day and night ... In Venice, Professor Benjamin Weiss sees his colleague killed in front of him when a ritual goes horribly wrong. They are both members of the Lamed Vav, a secret society of Occultists fighting supernatural menaces to humanity. Investigating rumors of a legendary grimoire, Weiss finds the book really exists ... and someone is using it to summon an ancient abomination into this world. Searching desperately for the book, a trail of night terrors, sleepwalking suicides and murders leads Weiss and his allies to Japan ... and the same Sleep Research Project. But what is the connection to the book? The Occultists claim they will cure David of the waking dreams driving him insane ... but can he trust them? Whether friend or foe, perhaps the Lamed Vav are the only hope for David, Saori and all of humanity. A black tide of nightmares is arising … and soon the world will be shrouded … in the Mists of Osorezan.
This was a really good sci-fi/horror in the likes you would see with Lovecraft. Great world building happening in this as it is very atmospheric and really brings you into the story. Well written characters that you could relate to. Really nice horror/action with twists and turns to keep you gripped. Will be looking for more from this author. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Horror on a grand scale, this book has secret societies and conspiracy theories, mysterious ailments, and legendary monsters all twisted together in a story that seems all too plausible.
In an efficiency culture, if you can get more effective sleep in a shorter amount of time, wouldn't that be wonderful? And lucid dreaming, doesn't that sound empowering? or maybe too good to be true. But the girl who died - that was an exception - a pre-existing condition, right?
This book weaves together the stories of a professor, a tutor, a student and her family, a research scientist and an ancient horror in a story you won't want to put down!
