Plato studied under Socrates and was Aristotle's teacher. Together these three Greeks developed the basis of philosophical thinking for the entire Western world. Plato was also a writer, mathematician, and founder of the Academy in Athens, which was the first university in Europe. Alcibiades is a dialogue featuring Alcibiades in conversation with Socrates. In the preface Socrates tells Alcibiades he loves him. Socrates uses the rest of the dialogue to rehearse the reasons Alcibiades needs Socrates. The Athenian youth is almost persuaded by Socrates' reasoning. Socrates' attempts to win Alcibiades away from politics fall on deaf ears. For many years the authenticity of this dialogue has been debated.

Plato (Greek: Πλάτων), born Aristocles (c. 427 – 348 BC), was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
Plato's most famous contribution is the theory of forms (or ideas), which has been interpreted as advancing a solution to what is now known as the problem of universals. He was decisively influenced by the pre-Socratic thinkers Pythagoras, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, although much of what is known about them is derived from Plato himself.
Along with his teacher Socrates, and Aristotle, his student, Plato is a central figure in the history of philosophy. Plato's entire body of work is believed to have survived intact for over 2,400 years—unlike that of nearly all of his contemporaries. Although their popularity has fluctuated, they have consistently been read and studied through the ages. Through Neoplatonism, he also greatly influenced both Christian and Islamic philosophy. In modern times, Alfred North Whitehead famously said: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato."

Otro de los diálogos socráticos escritos por Platón.
En este caso, se trata de un diálogo entre Alcibíades y Sócrates. Alcibíades tiene que ir a hablar con los políticos de la República y Sócrates lo interroga sobre qué temas se considera el propio Alcibíades experto. Sócrates intenta persuadir a Alcibíades de entrar en política.
Es una lectura compleja ya que Platón es muy redundante y vuelve y vuelve muchas veces sobre los mismos temas.

Another of the Socratic dialogues written by Plato.
In this case, it is a dialogue between Alcibiades and Socrates. Alcibiades has to go and talk to the politicians of the Republic and Socrates questions him on what subjects Alcibiades himself is considered an expert. Socrates tries to persuade Alcibiades to enter politics.
It is a complex reading as Plato is very redundant and returns and returns many times to the same themes.

When I read Apology—usually listed as Plato's first dialogue—Socrates already stood condemned to death, and yet he is the central figure in the dialogues. So I wondered if there wasn’t a more traditional way of reading them which showed some sort of logical progression of ideas, or at least seemed more linear in terms of time. Surely there is some recommended reading order? A cursory check led me to this.

The author of this marvelous site, Mr. Bernard SUZANNE, does have a recommended reading order which he has arranged in tetralogies. Due to copyright I am only going to show the first one, but for your own edification, check out his extensive site*. He has done a phenomenal job building it, and it is an on-going labor of love. He claims his order was the order the dialogues were intended to be read and offers plenty of explanation as to why. Here are the first four:

1st tetralogy (getting started): Alcibiades I + Lysis/Laches/Charmides

Alcibiades is not easy to read. I found myself going back and rereading what I had read quite often and I had difficulty following Socrates’ line of questioning here much more so than in Apology, so even though this may be recommended first, I am personally glad I didn’t read it first. Reading it on my own, with my limited background in Philosophy I might have given up or at least I know I would have not gotten so much out of it.

Interesting features/statements I liked:
• For the sake of the individual and of the state, we ought to aim at justice and temperance, not at wealth or power.
• We learn that the nature of individual existence, who we really are may be called more properly a soul and all genuine conversation is soul to soul.
• Man is one of three things: body, soul or both together.
• Socrates calls Alcibiades his ‘lover’, but it soon becomes apparent that he does not mean that word in the way we mean it today, so I can see where Plato is giving us an example of ‘platonic love’, even if he never called it that. Socrates means a faithful friend and Alcibiades understands that.
• We can never become better, if we do not know what we are to begin with. (This is my summary of a very long conversation which must be read to fully appreciate.)

Favorite conversation:
SOCRATES: There is only one point in which I have an advantage over you.
ALCIBIADES: What is that?
SOCRATES: I have a guardian who is better and wiser than your guardian, Pericles.
ALCIBIADES: Who is he, Socrates?
SOCRATES: God, Alcibiades, who up to this day has not allowed me to converse with you; and he inspires in me the faith that I am especially designed to bring you to honor.

All in all a good dialogue with much wisdom. On to Lysis!

*I have started reading some of it and plan to keep going back to check as I go along. Anyway, it's a program to follow with rationale and supplemental material to help neophytes like me along.

I read Alcibiades I which proclaims the Platonic doctrine that the first step in the pursuit of knowledge is to know oneself not because I was interested in the philosophical argument but because I was interested in the person of Alcibiades. I was also curious to see if I could spot the signs that have caused some scholars to argue that Plato was not the author of this dialogue.
At the end I was unsure what I had learned about the historical Alcibiades but quite sure that the text which I read in a modern translation contained nothing to suggest that Platon was not the author.
Alcibiades was a military commander who changed sides several times during the Peloponnesian War. First he served Athens then he went over to Sparta after which he fled to Persia. He rejoined the Athenian forces and then was assassinated most likely by the Spartans. While Alcibiades was fighting for the Spartans, his teacher Socrates was put on trial in Athens for corrupting the youth of the city and was condemned to death (i.e. ordered to drink poisonous hemlock). In the view of the historian Xenophon, Socrates was in reality condemned for being on friendly terms with his former student.
For someone interested in the historical Alcibiades, this dialogue raises more questions than it answers. When Socrates keeps insisting on that Alcibiades must know himself, is the author trying to say that Alcibiades never did which is why he kept changing his allegiances during the Peloponnesian War? When Socrates asserts that the Spartans more virtuous than Athenians was the author (who I still believe to be Plato) trying to suggest that Socrates planted a seed that led to Alcibiades abandoning Athens for Sparta?
Most historians accept Xenophon's view that Socrates was an innocent scapegoat who was in no way responsible for morally erratic behaviour of his student and friend Alcibiades. This dialogue does not truly support Xenophon's thesis. It seems to say primarily that Socrates at least tried to put Alcibiades on the right moral path. However, this dialogue also shows that Socrates had serious reservations about the Peloponnesian War both for moral and practical purposes.
Alcibiades I is a work that intrigues but which does not help the reader draw any conclusions about the historical persons of Socrates and Alcibiades.

Totalizing and tragic. Eerily prefigures the doomed pedagogy of Aristotle and Alexander, laying out as it does the deep-set struggle between the eros for wisdom and ambition, the desire to subdue thyself against the desire to subdue the world.

Socrates doesn't waste time in setting context for the eventual ping pong dialogue between him and Alcibiades I. Reading Plato's dialogue is like watching a huge ship getting decommissioned or assembled. The argument builds, branches out, builds some more and finally takes a shape that's promised in the premise. At the same time, notions that would otherwise weaken his argument are speculated, hypothesized and trashed.

To prove why Aclibiades needs Socrates, Socrates takes upon himself to narrate the importance of self-worth of a person, the context in which a person is evaluated and the virtues that are necessary to be successful in society.

"Mistakes in life and practice are likewise to be attributed to the ignorance which has conceit of knowledge."

Since the beginning of this conversation it's the first time Socrates address the innocence young men like Aclibiades possess. He is, in fact, attacking the young man's education and what Socrates believes, an unpreparedness to thrive in the politics of Athens.

Socrates makes an astute observation at one point. Its unfortunate that its not explored in detail.

"What, then, is justice but that better, of which I spoke, in going to war or not going to war with those against whom we ought or ought not, and when we ought or ought not go to war?"

There is a debate on authenticity of this dialogue. Without much exposure to Plato's other works, I cannot provide an opinion on that matter. I definitely enjoyed reading it.

Mainly a Propoganda for the penoppolosian war, not even sure if pkato wrote this or not. Has a great moral implication about the subjectivity of gaining knowledge on the content matter of a persona's expertise even though the methods of deduction contradicts the socratic ideas of rationality.

Somewhere along the dialogue it was apparent that this was far from a pure platonic text and suggests strong xenophonian themes even though the it's corny asf.

Ik kon niet neutraler tegenover deze dialoog staan. Plato weergeeft heel veel ideeën in deze dialoog. Die ideeën zijn noch absoluut slecht, noch absoluut goed.

Maar dat betekent niet dat ik het niet over die ideeën kan hebben want ik heb meerdere malen zo mijn twijfels gehad bij wat Socrates – die irritante fucking bebaarde botterik, kijk eens hoe spontaan ik daar een alliteratie uit mijn hoed toverde, wat wonderlijk – allemaal zei.

Deel 1 (ja we doen delen): Kritiek op de democratie

Eerst en vooral zit dit boek vol met soms subtiele en soms minder subtiele kritiek op de democratie waarin Socrates en Alcibiades leefden. Tussen mijn notities vind ik bijvoorbeeld Socrates die zijn mening dat beslissingen gemaakt door mensen die denken dat ze iets weten terwijl dat niet zo is (hetgeen kind of te verzoenen met Descartes’ theorie dat fouten voortkomen uit een wil om een handeling uit te voeren die groter is dan begrip over de handeling, tevens implicerend een fundamenteel gebrek aan kennis aan de basis van fouten, valt) koppelt aan de hedendaagse politiek door te zeggen dat politici helemaal geen verstand hebben over de zaken waar ze over beslissen of althans advies geven, waardoor er fouten worden gemaakt in de politiek.

Het is de idee dat als je iedereen politieke inspraak geeft (u weet wel, het basisprincipe van de democratie), dat ervoor zorgt dat ook zij die eigenlijk geen verstand hebben van de zaken vereist om tot optimale politieke beslissingen te komen (recht en onrecht worden aangehaald) politieke inspraak krijgen en er zo fouten komen.

Daarnaast had Alcibiades ook het idee dat een goede staat een staat is waar er enkel vriendschap is – ik weet het, klinkt heel belachelijk, maar bon – hij zegt, als we het cooler willen doen klinken, dat eendracht leidt tot een goeie staat. Concordia res parvae crescunt, discordia maximae dilabuntur, zoals Sallustius volgens Wikipedia schreef in zijn “Bellum Iugurthinum”. Het probleem is dat het functioneren van de democratie, voor zover ik weet en dat is niet ver aangezien ik bijlange geen verstand heb van politieke systemen dus als er hier mensen zijn die toevallig politicologie hebben gestudeerd mogen die mij altijd verbeteren, afhankelijk is van de mogelijkheid tot discussie over onderwerpen, met dan altijd het sluiten van één of ander compromis. Je kan dan aanhalen dat die compromissen nooit iedereen blij maken, in de democratie sluit het compromis meestal het nauwst aan bij de mening van ruwweg 51% van de bevolking, maar dat gaan we niet doen, dat is een heel andere discussie.

Wat ik probeer te opperen is dat er nooit vriendschap in een samenleving zal zijn, mensen gaan altijd wel verschillen van mening.

Klein intermezzo waar ik mijn mening over een mening van Tom Van Grieken over holebirechten op het vlak van adoptie uit

Ik ben het bijvoorbeeld niet eens met Tom Van Griekens plan om als hij met VB aan de macht komt het traditionele gezin te promoten. Hij zei, en ik heb opzettelijk mijn muzieknummer van Pierre De Maere gepauzeerd om terug te gaan kijken naar het interview met Riadh Bahri in kwestie opdat ik geen misinformatie zou verspreiden, het volgende:

“Wij vinden niet dat er zoiets bestaat als het recht hebben op kinderen, maar een kind heeft wel recht op een mama en een papa. Dus wij vinden dat [men] voor adoptie pri-, pri-, primmer-, primair moet gaan naar een man en een vrouw. (…) Dat heeft niks te maken of een homokoppel of een lesbisch koppel goeie ouders zouden zijn. Ik denk zelfs, Riadh, dat holebikoppels betere koppels zijn omdat ze bewuste ouders zijn. Maar, wa- ge hebt dat aspect, het kantpunt (ik denk dat hij hier standpunt wou zeggen) van de holebiouders en wij benaderen het aspect van het kind.”

Ik ben het niet eens met die mening. Hij zegt dat holebirechten verworven rechten zijn, ook het recht op adoptie, maar gaat dat recht wel massief inperken door holebikoppels praktisch te discrimineren. Want dat is wat het is, discriminatie. Als je zegt dat men “voor adoptie pri-, pri-, primmer-, primair moet gaan naar een man en een vrouw”, dan zeg je gewoon dat je holebikoppels zal discrimineren op het vlak van adoptie ten koste van heterokoppels. All animals are equal, but some more than others. Alle rechten van koppels op adoptie zijn gelijk, maar die van hetero’s meer dan anderen. Het is homofobie verpakt in een eloquent jasje dat toch constant argumenten voor gelijk recht op adoptie van kinderen aanhaalt gewoon om ze tegen te spreken door te zeggen dat men “het aspect van het kind” benadert en het kind “recht op een mama en een papa” heeft.

Zo lijkt het alsof zijn discriminatie van holebikoppels op vlak van adoptie er enkel en alleen is opdat de kinderrechten niet worden geschonden. Het probleem is dat de officiële kinderrechten nooit iets zeggen over een recht op een mama en een papa, en ik kan het weten want ik heb zonet alle 42 van de 54 kinderrechten in het kinderrechtenverdrag die niet gaan over wat organisaties doen om kinderrechten te respecteren gelezen en het enige wat ik kon vinden was “ART 18. Kinderen hebben het recht opgevoed te worden door hun ouder(s)”, een recht op heteroseksuele ouders wordt niet aangehaald, enkel een recht opgevoed te worden door hun ouder(s). De effectieve kinderrechten worden gerespecteerd in een systeem waar holebikoppels evenveel recht hebben op adoptie als een koppel dat bestaat uit een mama en een papa, Van Griekens uitspraak dat een kind recht heeft op een mama en een papa wordt voorgesteld als feit om zijn keuze te onderbouwen, maar is dat niet, want hij staat niet in het kinderrechtenverdrag.

Ik vind dat we iedereen gelijke rechten op adoptie zouden moeten geven en dat het heel debiel is om heterokoppels voorrang te geven bij adoptie, maar kijk, dat is maar mijn mening.

Einde van het intermezzo, terug naar de review

Soms bestaat er geen eendracht, maar tweedracht over iets, zoals in mijn voorbeeldje hier net. De democratie zorgt ervoor dat die tweedracht kan bestaan én dat men kan discussiëren over bepaalde zaken zelfs als ze van mening verschillen in de context van een politiek systeem. Een systeem waarin er geen tweedracht, enkel eendracht is in de politiek, Alcibiades’ droomsysteem, kan enkel bereikt worden als je de mensen die tweedracht veroorzaken door hun verschillende mening te uiten, verbiedt om hun mening te uiten door ze gewoon uit de politiek te verwijderen. Zo zullen nooit alle meningen uit een samenleving vertegenwoordigd worden in de politieke besluitvorming en is er niet langer sprake van een democratie, het is maar wederom een voorbeeld van een stelling uit dit boek die direct ingaat tegen de democratie. Zoals ik al zei, dit boek zit vol met soms subtiele en soms minder subtiele kritiek op de democratie. Ik zou het nog even kunnen hebben over de voor-en nadelen van de democratie, het is zeker iets waarover men kan beginnen denken na het lezen van deze dialoog, maar nu niet, nu echt niet want dan ben ik weer vertrokken richting een onnodige hoop gebazel.

Ik ga het gewoon kort houden door te zeggen dat Socrates’ kritiek dat de democratie mensen die geen verstand hebben van zaken aan het woord laat wat leidt tot fouten een verantwoorde kritiek is, maar dat we die ook moeten zien in de context van zijn periode: een periode waarin de democratie nog gigantisch veel verschilde van de hedendaagse democratie en we moeten ook onthouden dat het altijd belangrijk is dat we in een politiek systeem zitten waar alle meningen vertegenwoordigd worden, zelfs als dat leidt tot onenigheid, de onenigheid moet gezien worden als een voordeel in plaats van een nadeel omdat dan op zijn minst alle meningen vertegenwoordigd kunnen worden bij de politieke besluitvorming.

Deel 2: Over de kwaliteit van een advies en een handeling

Alcibiades heeft veel ambitie. Hij wil politiek advies geven aan de Atheners. Socrates moet al die ambitie natuurlijk kapotmaken. Hij vraagt Alcibiades wat het beste advies is, Alcibiades zegt al snel dat het ‘rechtvaardig advies’ is, advies dat gaat om zaken als recht en onrecht. Hij zegt dan dat Alcibiades daar geen verstand van heeft, omdat zijn kennis niet komt van iemand die verstand heeft van zaken als recht en onrecht, maar van de massa. De massa heeft geen concrete, vaste, eenduidige definitie van recht en onrecht, ze zijn daarom dan ook geen juiste leermeesters als je kennis over recht en onrecht wilt krijgen. Als we van ‘de massa’ leren wat steen of hout is, krijgen we de juiste kennis daarover mee, want iedereen is het eens over wat steen of hout is, zegt Socrates. De massa is enkel een goede leermeester over een onderwerp als de massa het eens is over wat het onderwerp inhoudt.

En hier is er een probleem, meer nog, er zijn twee problemen.

Ten eerste hebben we Socrates’ argument dat de massa geen eenduidige definitie heeft van zaken als recht en onrecht om zijn stelling dat de massa een slechte leermeester is te ondersteunen. De massa heeft inderdaad geen eenduidige definitie van zaken als recht en onrecht, wel bijvoorbeeld op het vlak van iets als hout of steen. Het verschil tussen iets als hout en het concept van recht, hetgeen de massa in staat stelt wel of niet een goede leermeester te zijn, is echter dat hout vaststaat, het is concreet, duidelijk, tastbaar, men kan hout zien en het hout noemen. Hout is hout omdat men vroeger hout heeft gezien en dat hout heeft genoemd, net zoals groen groen is omdat iemand vroeger groen heeft gezien en dat groen genoemd heeft. Een eenduidige definitie van een ding is afhankelijk van de mogelijkheid om dat ding te benoemen wanneer men het ziet in een concrete vorm.

Concepten als recht en onrecht zijn echter exact het tegenovergestelde van concreet, duidelijk, of vast, ze zijn abstract, conceptueel, niet echt en daarom ook ambivalent as fuck. Men kan een concept interpreteren op verschillende manieren net omdat er niets concreet is om de interpretatie van het concept, dat abstract is, tegen te spreken. De definitie van een concept kan evolueren, net omdat men nooit effectief concrete zaken heeft gevonden om ze te benoemen. De definitie van iets concreets kan niet evolueren, kan niet op verschillende manieren geïnterpreteerd worden, omdat het in het verleden benoemd werd omdat het concreet is en effectief benoemd kan worden is dit logisch?

Daaruit volgt dus dat als iets niet benoemd kan worden omdat het niet concreet is, dat er enkel dan discussie kan bestaan over de definitie daarvan en dat de massa er geen leermeester over kan zijn. En net dat, het feit dat Socrates’ idee van waar de massa een goede leermeester kan zijn, letterlijk elk abstract concept (eigenlijk is het trouwens een pleonasme wanneer ik abstract concept zeg, maar bon) weg doet vallen uit de gebieden waar de massa een goede leermeester kan zijn.

Het tweede probleem is dan de vraag die men kan stellen als de massa geen goede leermeester is bij abstracte concepten, namelijk: ‘Wie is dan wel de goede leermeester?’ Wie heeft er wel verstand van concepten. En het antwoord op die vraag is, volgens mij, niemand. Socrates zou mij waarschijnlijk doen zeggen dat het filosofen zijn, maar dan doe je alsof alle kennis over abstracte zaken uitsluitend bij filosofen zit, het past bij het narratief dat we allemaal moeten luisteren naar de filosofen en bij de overtuiging die Socrates sowieso had dat filosofen boven de rest van de bevolking staan en dat is een heel debiel narratief want de nuance nodig om een definitie te vormen van een concept wordt hier geëlimineerd als we gewoon één individu uit één groep mensen geloven.

Men kan dan zeggen dat de filosofen de nuance al hebben overwogen, maar toch voelt het niet juist om al ons vertrouwen bij één groep mensen die toevallig veel nadenken te leggen wanneer het gaat om de definitie van concepten.

Ikzelf, zoals ik al zei, denk dat niemand het antwoord op die vraag heeft, omdat iets dat niet echt is geen volledige definitie kan krijgen, dat is mijn overtuiging. We kunnen nadenken over de definitie en een soort halve definitie vormen, maar een vaste zal er nooit komen net omdat het een concept is en mensen altijd andere manieren zullen vinden om het te interpreteren, net als andere concepten met duidelijkere definities om het afhankelijk van te maken trouwens. Ons concept van wat goed en slecht is, is niet voor niets hevig verweven met de christelijke ethiek, we wisten het gewoon niet honderd percent zeker en gingen gewoon naar de Kerk zodat zij ons konden zeggen wat goed en slecht is en zelfs dan kunnen er mensen zijn met andere visie op goed en slecht, of grijze gebieden die noch goed noch slecht zijn net omdat er zoveel nuance kan zijn. Ik weet dat dit een gigantische oversimplificatie is, maar tja, het is veel te laat om alles in zijn volledigheid uit te leggen. Socrates doet alsof die definities van concepten vaststaan en ze bij de filosofen (want de massa valt niet te vertrouwen) liggen, maar ik vind van niet.

Ergens in die discussie over goed en slecht advies switcht Alcibiades plots van mening wanneer hij merkt dat hij niets weet over recht en onrecht en zegt hij dat het niet gaat om rechtvaardigheid, maar voordeligheid, “beetje ethisch onverantwoord ma bon” schrijf ik erbij en ik vind dat ik gelijk heb, daarom vermeld ik het nog eens. Men zou kunnen stellen vandaag de dag dat het voordelig is om migratie volledig te blokkeren in België omdat dat zorgt voor minder discriminatie naar allochtonen. Je kan geen allochtonen discrimeneren als er geen allochtonen zijn om te discrimineren. Dat is ethisch niet echt heel cool en de logica ervoor komt recht uit mijn anus, maar technisch gezien is het voordelig (kind of, zelfs dat kan hevig betwist worden), dus volgens Alcibiades zou dit dan goed advies zijn.

Ten minste, als we geen deftige definitie van voordeligheid hanteren, Socrates zoekt die en zegt dan ook meteen dat een voordelige handeling een mooie handeling is en een mooie handeling een goede handeling is en iets goeds is iets nuttigs en iets nuttigs is rechtvaardig. Wat Socrates hier gedaan heeft is heel even Alcibiades’ poging om de definitie van goed advies van ‘voordelig’ naar ‘rechtvaardig’ te veranderen, kapot te maken door de twee gelijk aan elkaar te stellen. Maar dat is niet zo gelukt.

Als we willen zeggen dat het voordelige en het rechtvaardige altijd aan elkaar gelijk zijn, dan moet de vergelijking “voordelig is altijd mooi is altijd goed is altijd nuttig is altijd rechtvaardig” ook in de omgekeerde richting werken, men krijgt dan “rechtvaardig is altijd nuttig is altijd goed is altijd mooi is altijd voordelig”. En daar hebben we een probleem, want ok, misschien is het rechtvaardige altijd nuttig, dat zou men nog kunnen zeggen, het rechtvaardige is altijd nuttig, maar het probleem doet zich voort bij de stelling dat het nuttige altijd goed is. Want dat is niet waar. Slavernij was nuttig voor de economie. Slavernij was niet goed. Slavernij baseert zich op het uitbuiten en beperken van de vrijheden van een menselijk individu, dat is niet goed. Het was – en is ook vandaag de dag, we gaan niet doen alsof dwangarbeid niet bestaat – nuttig, maar het is niet goed. Wederom! Socrates’ argument valt in mekaar.

Door de vergelijking in één richting op te laten gaan lijkt het alsof hij gelijk heeft maar a (voordelig) = b (mooi) = c (goed) = d (nuttig) = e (rechtvaardig) als en slechts als e = d = c = b = a en dat was hier niet het geval, want d =/= c. Het is een simpele redeneerfout bij Socrates. Hij dacht hier dat hij kennis had over een onderwerp (redeneren), maar die had hij niet volledig. Het is zo dat men fouten maakt, dat heeft Socrates zelf ook gezegd.

Deel 3: Hoe verbeter je jezelf, hierna stop ik ermee, ik beloof het

Socrates zegt dat Alcibiades zorg moet dragen voor zichzelf en dat je enkel zorg kan dragen voor jezelf door jezelf te verbeteren en dat dat enkel kan door zelfkennis.

Je kan iets niet verbeteren als je niet volledig weet wat het is, anders maak je fouten, daar heeft Socrates gelijk.

Een individu van het menselijke ras moet dan te weten komen wat hij/zij is. Socrates stelt dan dat de mens niet gedefinieerd kan worden door zijn lichaam, het lichaam is namelijk slechts iets dat de mens gebruikt en de gebruiker (de mens) kan men nooit gelijkstellen aan hetgeen gebruikt wordt (het lichaam). En dan zoek je naar de niet-lichamelijke essentie van de mens.

En telkens als het gaat over de niet-lichamelijke essentie van de mens komt de ziel aan bod. Je kan enkel uzelf leren kennen als je uw ziel kan leren kennen. Ik heb al een probleem met deze stelling, maar dat houd ik voor later, want Socrates, via een heel vreemd redeneerproces, stelt ook nog eens dat god een spiegel voor de ziel vormt en enkel door naar god te kijken kan je naar je ziel kijken en jezelf verbeteren.

Klein probleem, voor mij althans, met die twee zaken: ik geloof niet dat een ziel en een god bestaan. Je kan de ziel misschien nog opvatten als de poging onze conceptuele essentie van het menselijk bestaan te weergeven als iets concreets en god, god is een heel ander ding.

I am thoroughly fascinated by Alcibiades I for the dizzyingly intense thought that goes into this dialogue. I was a little confused near the beginning with regard to how to read it and follow the arguments.

But the way Socrates spoke of the nature of man, and a love relationship between him and Alcibiades developed, gets really engrossing near the end. It is through a ligamental and relational connection of souls, the real persons that are above the bodies, that this philosophical eroticism develops, so to speak. Since Socrates, remember, is a “lover.” And love is something that thoroughly fascinated Socrates, and, by extension, Plato. Love with all its transcendent, overpowering, counterintuitive force.

For this, i don't really find myself credible enough to rate it. It's just a conversation between the great philosopher Socrates, and Alcibiades, who is eager to rule Athens.
The whole dialogue is in the form of a question and answer, where Socrates asks, Alcibiades answers, and thus learns about what he should do, and what he should not.
Gaining knowledge about oneself is certainly the first step towards success in anything at all. Virtue, self knowledge, the difference in good and bad, everything should be clear in front of us.

"You have not therefore to obtain power or authority, in order to enable you to do what you wish for yourself and the state, but justice and wisdom."

(Some dialogues really made me laugh though, when Alcibiades while answering Socrates' rapid questions, came to a point of self contradiction several times.)

A-Tier – “Know thyself.”
Once you know who you are, you can begin to cultivate yourself.

I was told this would be a good starting point into Plato — and it truly was. It became a journey to understand oneself: who you are, whether that is your soul or something else, and how that potentially relates to the divine. It’s also filled with timeless wisdom. The idea that ignorance is the greatest form of foolishness, and that one of humanity’s biggest downfalls is claiming to know what we do not.

The pursuit of knowledge, truth, wisdom, and self-cultivation are all central themes. I think everyone has a bit of the young Alcibiades in them, and it’s important to recognize that as we move through life. That’s my take.

Este diálogo es muy recomendable porque muestra la esencia del pensamiento socrático y platónico acerca de temas recurrentes de la filosofía clásica, como la virtud, el buen vivir, el buen gobierno y la naturaleza del ser humano. En este diálogo se muestra a Sócrates interrogando a Alcibíades, un joven que aspira a ser grande en la política, y del cual Sócrates reconoce que está enamorado. A partir de un exhaustivo interrogatorio, se lleva a Alcibíades a reconocer su ignorancia sobre los asuntos que todo hombre debe conocer si quiere ser útil a la república.
En la segunda parte del diálogo, la más interesante a mi parecer, se indaga sobre la naturaleza humana, en el siguiente sentido: se establece que para poder participar en la política de tal manera que se pueda contribuir al bien de todos los ciudadanos es necesario primero estar instruido en la virtud; y que para esto, es indispensable primero conocerse a uno mismo para saber cuál es la virtud en la que debe uno instruirse.
Pero ¿qué es conocerse a uno mismo? Es preocuparse por los asuntos importantes que llevan a que uno sea cada vez mejor. Para saber sobre qué asuntos hay que preocuparse, en el diálogo se establece una distinción esencial sobre la esencia de la naturaleza humana: el hombre se sirve de su cuerpo; si aceptamos quien se sirve de algo es diferente a la cosa de la que se sirve, entonces hay que deducir que el hombre es algo diferente al cuerpo, siendo este solo algo de lo que se sirve. En conclusión, el hombre solo puede ser el alma, que es la que gobierna al cuerpo y, por ello, instruirse en la virtud es preocuparse por las cosas que hacen que el alma sea cada vez mejor: en eso consiste conocerse a sí mismo.

Dreadful.

Basically Socrates throwing insults at Athenian Politicians and lauding it over Alcibiades, even if he deserved it.

Also, I find it mighty funny that he would laud it over the Politicians when he later equivocates on utility when it comes to tools vs the body, and hence "proves" that the body is separate from the soul.

Is that so, Socrates? So then how can it be that we use the Soul to contemplate the forms? Does that make the Soul distinct from the Soul? However, Alcibiades, being not well educated, doesn't realise that User vs Used doesn't have to have an ontological distinction. I can use my intellect, which is a part of my soul, to contemplate things, even though it is not ontologically distinct from it. Even more so with composed things like the body.

It's a hectic read, to be very honest. The 0.5 stars I gave it are because some of the sentences have depth to them. Reading this can be quite annoying at times. I don't know who gets to read this book to its completion. Argh! Please pick another book. Not this one. I am beginning to suspect these are not even the words of Socrates.

During the first 2020 lockdown I read a lot of Plato, covering all of those dialogues typically categorised as being his early and middle period, with the exception of Parmenides (which I somehow never got around to) and those dialogues that are of doubted authenticity. For this latter reason, Alcibiades I a.k.a. Alcibiades Major was one of the ones I neglected. Last night though, I was having trouble sleeping and thought I'd give it a go.

First off, I can see why Alcibiades I is of doubtable authenticity. For an experienced reader of Plato, there are certainly moments that just don't really feel like Plato, as though something is just a bit off and that you're reading a writer doing an impression of him. While I still enjoyed the dialogue to a certain extent, a lot of the arguments Socrates uses to push his point forward feel quite weak and, had the author placed him up against a tougher interlocutor, I think there's a lot he wouldn't have been allowed to get away with. However, I have found this to be a common characteristic of a number of the Socratic dialogues, so it's not proof in itself. Still, when I finished the dialogue I felt fairly unimpressed, and since Plato usually elicits a far more positive response from me, I was pretty convinced the naysayers were right and that this work is either a forgery or has been otherwise misattributed to him.

But then I read one of the other reviews on this thread (by Czarny Pies), which suddenly seemed to make everything fall into place and justify the dialogue's existence. Czarny explains that the historian Xenophon argued that Socrates was put to death as a scapegoat due to his association and friendship with Alcibiades, who repeatedly switched sides during the Peloponnesian war (I didn't know this but it now seems to me to be essential knowledge in a reading of Alcibiades I, and massive thanks to Czarny Pies for pointing it out).

Suddenly the reference to the inscription of the mantra 'Know Thyself' at the Temple of Delphi seemed altogether appropriate and, as Czarny suggests, may be a reference to the real problem being that Alcibiades did not really know himself, which led him to change sides and (for a time) become an enemy of Athens. This leads me to feel that Socrates, in trying to help Alcibiades to know himself, is in fact attempting to avert the disaster that leaders who don't know themselves tend to wreak. The dialogue can therefore read as a defence of Socrates relationship with Alcibiades, hinting that Alcibiades was a man so confused that even the mighty intellect of Socrates could not show him the righteous path, and that his unjust actions were unavoidable, and not the fault of Socrates.

This interpretation feels like EXACTLY the sort of thing the Plato that I know and love would do in defence of his idol and, for me at least, is the strongest argument that the work is a legitimate one. In fact, to a certain extent it reminds me of the way Plato attacks the rhapsodes in the dialogue Ion, as a covert way of attacking the poets, whose denunciation by Socrates also played a part in his downfall. Viewing the dialogue in this light, I feel fairly convinced of its legitimacy and am inclined to attribute the clumsy arguments put forward by it, and the sub-par interlocutor that Socrates is up against, as a sign that the dialogue was indeed an early one for Plato and he was still honing his craft.

It's been mentioned by a few people that this used to be considered the appropriate starting point for Plato and I can see why, as it touches on a number of different Platonic concepts in passing, from the good, to love, to the soul, to justice, to the necessity of philosophy in leadership, to true knowledge (or lack thereof). Nevertheless, I didn't find it as persuasive as many of Plato's middle dialogues, or as fun as some of the other early (Socratic) ones, so regardless of whether it is authentic or not, it doesn't earn as high a rating as Plato would normally get from me. Still, if you're a fan of Plato, it's worth a look, if only to make up your own mind on its authenticity.
