This was a sweet read of two people who lost out on love both looking for something they never had. Victoria who was jilted weeks before her wedding is trying to outrun the embarrassment along with marrying a man her father picked out for her. David's wife left him with a small child and his sister is about to leave him as well to start a new career. He doesn't want a wife but his sister sees things differently. It is a tangled mess on the day his sister tells him he has but hours to learn about his new bride and to pick her up. He finds his self in a mess planning on sending her packing until he meets her. Things start getting interesting as he tries to hide he wasn't the one writing to her. This author will keep you smiling throughout this wonderful read as she breaks your heart with the story of Fannie. Such a wonderful delightful little girl with so much sorrow and pain.

Victoria stole my heart from the start with her caring loving ways. She pulls Fannie out of her shell and gets her to communicate almost from the start. David is a little bullhead but Victoria has was to bring out the best in him making him start to believe he could have a life with her. She is taken back to find he is different than his letters shows him to be. It doesn't take him long to take her heart as she falls in love with the family who is broken.

David might be a little on the cold side but he hasn't any trouble showing the love he has for his family. He is a broken man who is afraid to love again. He doesn't feel he needs a wife but does admit his daughter could use a mother. Is it worth it to only find another woman will walk away from them? He must overcome some major issues before he can truly open his heart and soul to start over and bring happiness to his family.

Victoria, Bride of Kansas is part of the 50-book series, American Mail-order Brides where you can read about 50 brides who travel hundreds of miles in hopes of finding the man of their dreams, some getting out of a tight situation. Each author brings you a compelling sweet clean read that will make you want to read the next in the series. Once you read Victoria be sure and pick up Santa's Mail-Order Bride by Ms. Burke's which tells the story of David's sister Maggie and catch up on how David and Victoria are doing.

This author gives you such wonderful characters from the daring Fannie who hasn't spoken since her mother left to Maggie David's sister. Both are wonderful loving people who take over your heart making you wish you could have truly met them. These characters become real to you as you wish you could travel back in time to this small town so you can find out what life was like back then.

This was a wonderfully well written story that will touch your heart. So much pain and sorrow to overcome. Adults learning to trust again along with a small child who must learn to trust that people will stand beside her caring and loving her. It was a pleasure watching this family overcome their issues to find their HAE. I know when I pick up one of E.E. Burke's book she will bring me a compelling story of long ago with outstanding romance that is a refreshing read that will bring a smile to my face and my soul. This is one author I highly recommend you try I am sure you will come to love her writing style as much as I do.

** I have received an ARC for my honest review. **

Being a divorcee, David does not trust women and has his hands full with his daughter, Fannie. His sister, Maggie, is leaving shortly for schooling and David doesn’t know yet how he will raise Fannie and run the store. He writes a letter for a mail-order bride only he finds Maggie has taken matters into her own hands.

Victoria travels west to marry David, a solid Scrooge-like shopkeeper. His sister, Maggie, has been pretending to be David in the letters and orders him a bride. David finds out just before he has to pick Victoria up at the train station. Victoria has fallen for the wonderful man in the letters. Reality, however, is not what she imagined. David didn’t write the letters. Fannie has several challenges of her own, including the inability to talk.

Join the David and Victoria as they explore their new relationship and fall in love with little Fannie. E.E. Burke has woven a wonderful tale of hope, forgiveness, trust and family. I sincerely hope to see future books about Maggie, David’s sister, and perhaps a book about little Fannie as a woman.

This was such a sweet story of two people who have been hurt very deeply by their previous encounters with “love” and watching them learn to trust one another, as well as getting over their insecurities and anxieties, was a pleasure.

There’s so much to recommend this story, I’m not sure where to start. I adored Fannie, David’s little girl who also had to learn to trust the grownups; I was praying that one of those 50 brides would include David’s sister Maggie, who was such a loving and thoughtful sister and Aunt. Low and behold, at the end of this book, I was thrilled to learn that E. E. Burke had penned her story, ‘Santa’s Mail Order Bride’ and she paired her with her brother’s competitor, Gordon Sumner! Let me tell you, I’m in a squee-ing mode now!

I highly recommend you read this truly sweet, well written and charming story that will fill you with hope of faith and love.

Victoria and David are so very different, but they are perfect for each other because they match in the most important way - on the inside. But can two people with golden hearts battered by the world build a loving marriage when a lie brought them together? The fun is in finding out. And this story with its beautiful prose, compelling characters and historical holiday details is not only fun but a read to remember and return to every Christmas.

Young miss, Victoria Lowell flees Massachusetts after being jilted by her fiance. looking to start fresh and make a new life for herself, the daughter of a wealthy family responds to a mail order bride advertisement and leaves the comforts of home to start off on her adventure into matrimony. Taking that leap, Victoria travels to Kansas where she is expecting the man she fell in love with through letters to meet her and marry.

In Kansas, general store owner, David O'Brien is having a trying time. His wife having run off with another man leaving him with a young daughter who stopped talking when her mother left as well as a busy store to run has him contemplating his life. He knows he needs a mother for his feisty daughter who is cared for by David's sister Maggie, but he can't seem to get around to the task of advertising for that very need. Unbeknownst to him, Maggie has had the foresight to take matters into her own hands and hope for the best. She has a life she would like to begin, and even though she loves and adores her brother and niece, that life is calling her. Maggie begins the process of seeking a wife for David and that wife to be will be in Kansas at any moment and bringing David up to snuff is not going to be easy. When Maggie finally lets the cat out of the bag, David is understandably angry, but he has a promised bride waiting for him at the train station.

As Victoria awaits on the train platform for her fiance to arrive, the enormity of her circumstances begin to gnaw at her like the Kansas wind that seeks to blow her away. When her betrothed arrives late to meet her, she discovers a marked difference between the man who wrote the letter and the man in front of her, but she isn't a simpering woman, she will go on. David had hopes of coming clean with Victoria and sending her packing back to whence she came, but meeting her in person stirs his spirit and he begins a sort of courtship, mainly as a means of time to figure out these things that were thrown at him so quickly.

Victoria and David's journey to an accord is quite the ride, and throwing in the mighty little daughter, Fannie makes Victoria: Bride of Kansas a wonderful tale and a great setting for things to come. David's reluctance to start over with someone new is gripping and heart-warming. Having been so hurt by the woman he thought he loved, his bruised heart finds it difficult to let Victoria in at first, but this formidable opponent is a welcome surprise. This well-written and touching tale is a winner.

This was my first book by EE Burke but definitely will not be my last!! I thourghly enjoyed the audio book version I won from a contest on EE Burke's facebook page. I just ordered the print version from Amazon because I enjoyed it that much that I had to have an actual physical copy of this book for my bookshelf.
Victoria a lonely young lady from extreme wealth and privilege but all that means nothing without someone to love and to be loved in return. She sets out on a journey west leaving it all behind to answer a mail order bride newspaper ad of David a lonely divorced shopkeeper with a young daughter that is in great need of a mothers love. Only to arrive and find out he knew nothing of her all thanks to his sister Maggie that really does have his best interest at heart. Can David let go of all the hurt inside him again and learn to love Victoria because the petite beautiful young lady really is everything he and his daughter truly need. Can Victoria forgive Davids stubborn Irish pride and show him he can love again and prove to him she can be a good mother to his daughter and that she is is the perfect person to help his little Fannie become a whole happy little girl again. One definitely will want to read or listen on audio book and find out. You will not be disappointed and will want to put this one on the readers keeper shelf

I am a huge fan of American Historical Romance novels that feature the mail-order bride storyline because I love this period in our nation's history, so imagine my glee when I discovered the Mail Order Brides Series featuring a bride from every state. This book is #34 of 50 and I absolutely loved it. This story is loaded with historical accuracy that paints a vivid portrait of life in Kansas in the winter of 1890, when Victoria Lowell travels by train across the country to marry a man whose letters promise the romantic love and acceptance her own father has denied her. David O'Brien is a successful mercantile owner who has physical and emotional scars he hides by being emotionally distant from both his daughter and younger sister, burying himself in work rather than face his demons. Can you imagine the courage and fortitude Victoria had to possess to leave everything she knows behind to marry a virtual stranger? Weaving a beautifully written and poignant love story that showcases why I love this genre, E.E. Burke captures a time in our history that left me spellbound from the first page to the last. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and I highly recommend this story and this author.

Great Christmas time Story

I loved this story. I enjoyed getting to know Victoria and seeing David through her eyes. She arrived on the train already in love with him. He knew nothing about her until hours before her arrival. He needed a mother for his daughter. I liked Maggie and Fannie. I also liked that E.E. Burke has introduced characters from other books in this one.
Give this story a shot and you won't regret it.

Excellent Continuation of the Series

This is the 34th book in the American Mail Order Brides series and it was a delight to read from beginning to end. The characters are believable and accurate for the time. It also seems that if I dig around a bit I will find other stories by this author in this town.

This was such a nice change from the psychological thrillers and family dramas I’ve been reading! I love historical novels and who doesn’t love the sweet romance of this series! This is my first by this author, but I guarantee it’s not the last.

A very good and sweet story!

I gave up reading in order, so picked a state that my childhood friend lives in! Great story, loved his daughter and the cats too! It sounded like there should be a story about the banker, but its got to wait for the rest of this series to be finished!

David O'Brien has his hands full running a small store selling all kinds of goods and raising a young daughter still devastated by her mother's departure. He has time for little else than keeping the store afloat. When his beloved sister gently lets him know that it's come time for her to move out to pursue her own interests, David's going to be hard pressed to handle raising a child and all his responsibilities without some help. However, he's even more wary of marrying again as he's still recovering from the wounds of his first disastrous marriage.

Victoria Lowell has grown up in wealth and privilege, but without a great deal of affection. She lost her mother at a young age, and her father and step-mother never made her feel part of the family. When an ugly scandal rocks her world and her fiance leaves her for another, Victoria is desperate to escape a life that brings her no joy. Upon reading an advertisement for a bride, she quickly falls in love with the romantic man who has penned her heartwarming letters. When he asks her to move out west to marry him, she embarks on what she hopes will be romantic adventure of a lifetime. Little does she know that the man she's about to meet has no idea she even exists.

With a little matchmaking help, Maggie O'Brien hopes to see her brother situated before she must take her leave. She loves him and her adorable niece more than anything, but knows that without some help, he's unlikely to change. She risks her brother's wrath by deceiving him, but hopefully her gamble will win him the love of a lifetime.

The characters in this novel are charming, likable, and interesting. This is a book that will make you smile and leave you cheering for love. E.E. Burke's writing flows off the pages with a grace that will keep the reader eager for more. The story unfolds beautifully as the characters grow and their love blooms. While a bit predictable, the story is engaging and clever and is easy to get lost in. Definitely a must read for anyone who loves a good romance novel.

I received a free copy of this novel in return for an honest review.

Victoria: Bride of Kansas (American Mail-Order Bride #34)
By: E.E. Burke
4/5 stars

Victoria was a jilted by her fiancée, which caused all sorts of rumors and caused her to be shunned. And to top it all off, her father believed the rumors being spread about her. Victoria felt she had no recourse in her society life, so she made changes. After her choice to become a mail-order bride, she exchanged several letters with her groom and ended falling in love with his words and in turn, she fell in love with him.

David owns and runs a general store. He’s a single father to a young daughter and has been raising her with his sister’s help after his ex-wife took off with another man. David is embittered and has hardened his heart toward women looking for love or marriage. But his meddlesome sister believes that her niece needs a mother and she can see the good in her brother and his need for a good woman who will love him. So she wrote letters to Victoria as her brother, unbeknownst to David or Victoria.

When they meet, it’s awkward and many of their interactions are awkward. But they slowly find a rhythm. But they still have other trials to make it through, before they can come to a happy end.

This is a nice addition to the series. Once again a groom gets an unexpected bride and decides to keep her. The sexual tension between the two was more apparent than in some of the previous books. I liked that their attraction was obvious. There we some sweet touches, like a handfasting, which I enjoyed as well.
