Baby Brother starts off with a nice dose of pornography (no doubt thanks to Noire, who has penned quite a few entirely decent one-handed reads). It's not the most eloquent erotica I've ever read, but it's graphic and steamy and kind of fun (except for the use of the term "gushy". "Her warm gushy." Gross.). But the book isn't all happy sexy time, oh no, it's actually violent as shit and pretty disturbing. I don't know if credit goes to Noire or 50 Cent for this, but the same descriptive powers that bring you the thrills of pleasurable intercourse turn out to be just as vivid when describing rape and ultra-violence. If only they were anywhere near as potent in generating reasonable plot or psychological depth. But alas.
I will give the book credit though, the plot was not entirely predictable. I won't give it away, but about halfway through there's a twist that I was not expecting at all. Meanwhile though, the book suffers from some serious moral paradoxes. It's ostensibly a moralistic tale that seems to want to persuade the troubled youth of the world to get out of the game, but as so many of these things do, it also can't help but glorify some of the more horrific sides of it and basically engineer a state of exception where genuine morality is no longer an acceptable option - the 'monster' must emerge. Sure, he allegedly gets killed off once again and everyone can become upright citizens, but really, how persuasive is that? It's like telling an alcoholic that they can totally go clean, they just need that one last binge first to tie off some loose ends. Right.
And for all its ostentatious use of dialect and slang, the language rings unbelievably hollow. It really feels like choice words are being thrown in to give it that "urban" feel, but without actually inhabiting the language. Is this a novel meant for people who actually talk like this? Or is it for suburban white kids looking for thrills?
Weirdly, in some sense the most disturbing scene to me is actually not the rape or ultra-violence, but this one really awful moment where a guy is in a hotel room with a woman he finds completely revolting, but who gives fantastic head. The narrator describes, with excruciatingly painful realism, how the guy is watching this woman and basically trying to get what he wants out of her while giving her as little in return as possible. It's so awful and unpleasant. And, incidentally, a totally unnecessary scene. Unfortunately, it's probably the most genuine moment of psychological portrayal the book has. I hated it.
But for all its flaws, and there are many, the book is kind of a page-turner. I was really sort of interested in what would happen next.

i think that this bookl is really good because the boy dies for no reason and he actually wanted to do something with his life but that showed me that a lot of people die for no reason and even if htere in volved with a gang or anything it just shows that people die for no apparent rason.

Street life gets you one of two things jail or dead. The seven Davis brothers made a promise to their mother that they would all make somethng of themselves and watch out for their younger brother.The boys didn't stick to their promise they lived their life as thuggs.The baby brother however grew up a whole different way he wanted to be something in life.One night the night before he was leaving to Stanford University changed his whole life around and made the bothers life worse.While fighting a tragedy in his life and being falsely accused of it baby brother ended up being raped and killed in prison.
After baby brother being falesly accused of killing his girlfriend the day before going to college the brothers lost it.One of the brothers who had became a police officer tried to help his brother as much as he could but it didn't work.The brother who was effected the most was Priest(know as Monster) after going to prison and gettting out decided to get out of the street life.After hearing at a super market that the guy in front of him was the one who raped and killed his brother in prison, Priest became worse than he ever had been.Two brothers who were twins were drug lords.One of the two ended up being killled.The last two got out street life while they had time still and became legit.The Davis brothers of Queens lives didn't end up as their mother wanted.
The author gave good deatils throughout the book helping you understand the brothers lives.She kept the pace steady and never gave little deatil everythng was fully expalined.The dialogue used in the book didn't reflect on the boys lives.The authors used street language when necessary in you understanding how the boys were.
Seven Davis brothers who came up in the hard streets of Queens lives became ruined.Six of the brothers who desired to follow their father foot steps didn't all go through with it.The worse seemed to happen to the good.Its a good book I would tell young men who live the street life to read it and understand it.

I chose this book because you told me i would problaby like it. The genre of my book is realistic fiction. the setting of the book takes place in New York. the main charecter is baby brother his the youngest of 5 broters he wants to become a doctor. He dosent get in trouble like 3 of his brethers that were drug dealers. the beginnig of the book baby brother & his gurl friend go to this festevel thing. in the middle of the story sari gets shot by her brother drug dealer rival. people think that baby brther shot her so he ands up in jail. at the end of the book b-brother gets killed in prison.his brothers found out and wanted who ever killed b-brother dead. so sari aka b-brother gurl friend brother makes an allience with b-brothers brothers to get who ever did that to their sibblings. they found out who did it or who was responseble for thair death. they got the men that did it and them they were all killed. the main problem of the book was when b-brother got acused of killing sari. this problen is solved by killing the men that killed sari &b-brother. my opinion of this book is that the stuff that happen in this book could happen to someone in real life.

Zabu Davis, Baby Brother, is headed to Stanford to fulfill his dreams of becoming a surgeon. His six brothers are determined to keep him on the right path, especially since they promised their mother on her dying bed that they would. After attending an event with his girlfriend, Sari, Zabu and Sari head home. Sadly, Sari is gunned down. Filled with grief, Zabu runs after the gunman trying to get street justice for Sari. In a blink of an eye, Baby Brother's life is changed.
On Rikers Island, facing a murder charge, Zabu is given kitchen duty. Not knowing that some inmates want to get revenge on one of his brothers through him, Zabu is brutually violated and killed...that's when the drama really unfolds.
The Davis brothers decide that Zabu's death will not be in vain. They plot and plan to kill any and everyone who played a part in Zabu's death.
This was a fast-paced short read. It is not a full-length book, it's a novella. It held my interest and attention. I was not disappointment in Noire's telling of this story.

This is a good book it didn't take me that long to read it because I just keep wanting to know what's going to happen next. Its about seven brothers who made a promise to there mom to be successful and take care of thier little brother. My favorite character is a cop name Raheem he is one of Zabu's older brothers. Baby brother was about to leave New York and go to college over in Cali but right before he does, blinding violence happens. I would tell my friends about this book and to try it. And for other people I would say if you like 50 cent you will probalay like this book.

May 4, 2010The book was alright, the parts that I liked were when all the shootings and killings happened. I also liked when the davis brothers dropped everything they where doing and went to go help baby brother. They also did all they could to try and get him out and i liked that about the book.
What I did not like about the book was the ending, the ending sucked because nothing realy happened all the brothers quit the business and did normal things and got jobs, and I did not like that about the book.

WOW....WOW...WOW...
This book shook me emotionally.. I guess if I had read the book description, I could have saved myself a little heartache....but I didn't.
So here goes.... I fell in love with Zabu aka Baby Brother, the youngest brother of the Davis brothers. Baby Brother had the love and support of his older brothers and because of this, he was going places. We get to briefly experience the steamy love affair of Zabu and his girlfriend until a terrible tragedy changes everything....

This was okay- nothing to scream about. Your average urban-fiction story if you ask me. I love 50 Cent and will take a look at just about anything with his name on it, even his water, but this isn't all that.
I liked the Davis brothers characters the most I think, out of everything the book offers. The story line is okay, could have been brought out more. About a full quarter of the book is two other G-Unit excerpts which kind of felt like a rip-off to me.

What an interesting hit-the-ground-running book to start with. 50 Cent has these series of books about life in the hardcore hood/gang. This book was about a beloved little brother of a large family getting accused of the murder of his girlfriend, which he didn't do and then getting raped and murdered in the slammer and the vengeance his family takes.
Pros: Interesting look into a lifestyle far from mine

This was good just not what I was expecting I was deeply disappointed in the outcome of the main character "Baby Brother", he was suppose to be going to college and everything went to hell after one night of partying and his girlfriend's murder. It was intense but just too fast for me not enough chacter development for me to connect with the pain of the characters.

I liked this book. Very fast paced. Highlight is when Priest turned back into Monster. Look forward to reading another one. Very well written. Captures attention. very descriptive without describing everything to death. I hate those books that take 12 pages to describe scenery. This book is straight and to the point.

Very raw, but I can definitely see the appeal for certain peeps. Pick this up if you need a sweaty, thuggish, streetlife storyline fix. One of many "G-Unit" books.
