Margaret Edith Weis is an American fantasy and science fiction author of dozens of novels and short stories. At TSR, Inc., she teamed with Tracy Hickman to create the Dragonlance role-playing game (RPG) world. She is founding CEO and owner of Sovereign Press, Inc and Margaret Weis Productions, licensing several popular television and movie franchises to make RPG series in addition to their own. In 1999, Pyramid magazine named Weis one of The Millennium's Most Influential Persons, saying she and Hickman are "basically responsible for the entire gaming fiction genre". In 2002, she was inducted into the Origins Hall of Fame in part for Dragonlance.
I read these many years ago. I loved the books right up until the very end. The ending was most disappointing to me. I thought the magic system in this world was fantastic. I loved the stories and plot lines...until the ending.
That being said, it is hard to go wrong with anything written by Margaret Weis.
Book One: Forging the Darksword - 12-17 June 2025 Book Two: Doom of the Darksword - started 17 June 2025 Book Three: Triumph of the Darksword - completed 3 July 2025 Kind of underwhelming. There was a lot of interesting world-building with the various elements of power. Interesting in that it branched out from the traditional 4 elements (earth, air, fire, water) and added 5 additional elements (time, space, spirit, life, & death). Unfortunately, it never really delved into what the various wielders of these elements could do. The ending seemed a bit rushed, and didn’t really explain anything.
The Darksword Trilogy is one of my favourite fantasy series. I'm not really a fan of the genre, but this book was introduced to me when I was young and I was quickly fascinated by the world, the characters and the story.
It is one of the few fantasy series I've come back to and each re-reading has been just as enjoyable as the first.
An excellent trilogy. It is rare to find the 2nd and 3rd book as good as the first. Character development continued as the books progressed. The actual story line was truly unique. I highly recommend these books.
A miraculous birth of a boy raised a peasant who turns out to be a king, but ends up a savior that changes the world. Plus some magic, etc., to keep it different.
