Mated to the Captain #1

Light Years Away

Rate this book
Maybe it was fate.

To get off of the space station Del desperately needed a job on board a spaceship. He wasn’t looking for love and he certainly wasn’t wanting the attention of a grumpy alien Captain who disciplined wayward crewmembers or threw them out of airlocks. Del never expected to be the Captain's new mate.

In this gay sci-fi follow the misadventures of a young human on board a Xolian space cruiser where being the Captain’s mate just might prove to be more difficult than being his First Officer.

This M/M sci-fi contains scenes of domestic discipline between consenting adults.

That was such a strange book.

A mixture of "Fifty Shades of Grey" meets "Captive Prince" with aliens and some heavy and rather explicit sex scenes that kind of reminded me of Santino Hassell's books. *lol*

But... I still umm ... kind of liked it? *blushes fiercely*

Jeez!! My soul has been corrupted!

I'll go straight to hell!

But hey this has an advantage too:
At least it's warm in there! ;-P

Ah, such a weird, kinky and deliciously smexy book. 😉 This book was screaming ”Shin” and I loved it! 😁 And soooo damn funny! 😂 The banters between Del and Quinn are just hilarious. 👏 The misunderstanding of each other’s culture, minor language barrier and different concepts on issues and this book also has such interesting and refreshing alien concepts and fantastically different cultures. Oooooo, really loved it. 😊

Del is young, a bit unexperienced when it comes to relationships and desperate for a job. As a hetro-flexible type of guy, he thought himself to be quite open-minded and flexible but that didn’t prepare him for waking up in a bed together with another man. 😂 And not just another man, a more than seven feet tall humanoid alien whose species are famous for being badass warriors. 😁 What he asked the previous night at a bar to this guy was to become the first mate of this alien whose name he couldn’t remember. 😂 But his understanding of first mate being the first officer was utterly wrong because being the first mate of a Xolian means they are mated for life. 😉

Quinn is now confused. Last night at a bar, this pretty blonde human was all over him and desperately asking to be his first mate. He was very fluttered and if he had to be completely honest, he was aroused as soon as he saw him. 😁 So he gladly accepted this little human to become his first mate and took him into his explorer ship. Now they are in the middle of nowhere galaxy and this annoying human is talking that he had no idea that they were legally married. 😂 He couldn’t wait to consummate his marriage with this little attractive human and now he’s saying he’s not even interested in men. 😜

Del is really scared by this attractive but stern-looking and firm alien. He said they have a mating bond and they couldn’t be apart from each other for long. But all he wanted to do was to escape somewhere far far away and never meet this man again. They’d have to consummate their marriage sooner or later so he has little time to escape. 😁 And as soon as he ran away from his mate, he wished he didn’t in the first place. He was captured as a lost pet in a space station, sold illegally to a fly, nearly devirginized by that fly (thankfully, it didn’t happen) 😂 and was luckily rescued by captain Quinn in the end. He now regrets everything he hastily did and all he wanted was to be in Quinn’s arms and be a good, little mate but Quinn is now distant to him. Will Quinn forgive him and love him again?

Did I say the banters were hilarious? It’s so funny and witty and the storyline is very refreshing. I really loved it. The plot was really unpredictable and I was quite shocked by the revealation of one of the MCs. And when they finally had sex, that was fireworks. 😍 And spoiler alert, their fellatio technique, that was really kinky and sexy. 😂👏 I couldn’t get enough of this novel and this was a damn cliffhanger. So I need to read the book two ASAP. All three books in the series are available on KU. 😊

Favorite excerpts from the novel: 👽👽👽

“We are mated for life, Del. And yes, you and I and our witness signed the mating license. It’s all legal, I assure you.”

“I'm sorry, Del. Our brains, to put it in the simplest way possible, are now coded to each other’s arousal scent and pheromones. It makes a lock on our bodies to ensure we are faithful to each other. It’s permanent. That is why Xolian mates can never be separated for long.”

“Two words, Quinn. Anger management.” With a snort at his cheekiness, I pointed a finger at him. “One word, Del. Behave.”

Delightfully Odd

Well, that was some mighty interesting brain candy, I tell you what! Silly, ridiculous fun is what this was (except for that one part where that evil guy did that bad thing and totally grossed me out on top of it).

I could devour this type of brain candy all day. Fabulous bit of escapism. On to the next one!

I did not enjoy this book. The characterization was inconsistent, I could not connect. The MCs personality changed to suit each scene. The plot moved too fast and it felt like too much was crammed in. I just didn't care.

The aliens dialog was too much like earth banter. Rob Colton and Lyn Gala did it better.
No captain would assign an unqualified crew member as a first officer. That would make him a bad captain.
Some plot elements are overused in this genre and several showed up in this book but were not explored indepth.

There were some nice world building details, like the trees and the task of healers.
I think this author has potential.

Meh... I’m always on the hunt for good MM sci-fi, alien romance. I’m sure many people will love this, unfortunately for me, this one just fell in line with all the other mediocre ones out there.

Abusive then cliché

Wow. So Quinn is totally ok with knowing that his "mate" was totally drunk and not in his right mind when he signed his mating contract. He even admits that he KNEW Del was totally drunk and he went through with it anyway. And then, he has the audacity to be mad at Del for trying to escape and PUNISHING him for escaping when he's more or less being held prisoner.
Then, Quinn FURTHER endangers Del by claiming he's a pet not his mate. This causes Del to be abused by the pet catchers then nearly getting raped by a terrible alien.
Everything bad that happens to Del in the first half of the book is QUINN'S fault, but then Del totally takes ALL responsibility for what has happened and accepts punishment. He totally loses all his fire and just pretty much says yup it was all my fault, punish me, but please don't hurt me too much!
Quinn says "This disciplinary session is for taking the space runner, endangering your life, and running away from your lawful mate. In the eyes of the Intergalactic judicial system, I am in my right to do whatever I wish for these offences." But does DEL have any rights at all? He was pretty much hoodwinked into this mating while drunk and since that time he's been treated like shit by everyone.
Then the punishment is pretty much Quinn beating him relentlessly (in the form of a spanking, but still a beating) while Del cries, wails and BEGS and tries to get away all the while Quinn is telling him what amounts to YOU ARE A MINE NOW, YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS, YOU WILL OBEY ME! Not literally, but reading between the lines, that's what it seems like to me. It was not sexy, it was abuse. Quinn never accepts any responsibility at all for what has happened or for endangering his mate.
This whole half actually angered me. This coming from someone who happily reads slave/master novels and enjoys them (when they're done right). The difference here is that Quinn actually thinks it's ok to do this to a free person who is his mate, and Del just pretty much gives up and accepts. Another reviewer said he got Stockholm Syndrome, and it's true. And it wasn't even in a sexy captor becomes loving partner way. Del just seems to give up cause he has no choice and Quinn is just happy with it like nothing's wrong with the situation.
This is not sexy, this is abuse.
Also, the other pets that were blatantly being abused terribly in that section, there's no mention of them at all later or any outrage once Quinn and Del are reunited. It's like the author used terrible suffering as set pieces and dressing.
And then suddenly without real reason, Del wants Quinn, he'd do anything to be with Quinn, everything is fine, he's not upset that he's been forced into this mating, that he was put into danger because of this guy who mated him while he was too drunk to even remember the event, he needs Quinn. It's like the author just flipped a switch and Del is a completely different person. There is no reason for Del's sudden switch, and the 2 main characters don't even have chemistry.
After that there's a whole meet the parents, General wants to be your mate plot line that I'm not even going to go into because it was ridiculous and didn't make any sense with what was said previously.

The book could have been cute, but just came in off clumsy and like the author doesn't really understand what consent is.

It was a very short book. First from this author. Though the story is not that weird but the random aliens thrown in the way and their description surely is bizarre. The pace is rushed which is never good for me. And the story begins out of the blue with less word build up. The story and characters do have a good potential and an okay framework to build their house but it needs solidification, more pillars, a real good paint. It needs work and patience.

I wanted to love this book, but sadly while it had potential it never completely worked for me. Both MCs had more chemistry with side cast and crew members, then they did with each other. Very much lacking romance, just forced proximity and the mating contract.

The world building was interesting though, I'm weak for sci fi and exploration of new planets/action and missions. This did give star trek vibes to start, which is perfect for me and I liked Del at first with his not giving in. True his headstrong and makes foolish choices, but it made sense so his sudden change in the latter half was disappointing.

Quinn didn't really grow on me, nor did any of the Xolians for the most part with they seemed very stuck up and have a need to being control- they're always right and everyone else is stupid. Never really listened to anyone but each other when it came to anything important, got frustrating and boring very quickly.

Overall it was fast paced and entertaining enough to keep me reading, but it was a chaotic mess of events. They have a happy ending for now, with the next book in the series continuing their story but I'm not invested enough to continue.

This was an ok read for me. After getting drunk Del Foster wakes up to the surprise of his life. Finding out that he has accepted what he at first thinks of as a position on a starship, but finds out that he is mated to the Captain instead. Captain Quinn is a very respected and feared member of his species. He shows his new mate Del a surprising amount of patience while trying to keep him out of trouble that Del finds himself in anyway, and disciplining him to teach him how to live this new life. Del tries his best to escape his mate but the more he learns about is Quinn he becomes interested in learning more. The sex scenes were good. I didn't really warm up to the characters in this book. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I was hoping that the new year would bring me a fun sci-fi erotica read.....

Awakening in the arms of a strange, but hot, alien, Del vaguely remembers the night before....To find a way off the space station, he'd agreed to be the Xolian captain's First Mate -- but not that kind of Mate! Apparently being Capt. Quinn's 'first mate' involves a lot more than being part of the ship's crew. Quinn won't relent even though Del's upset, but agrees to wait on consummating their relationship until Del is ready.... and Del has decided he'll never be ready. When Quinn's ship is recalled to his home planet, and Del has to meet the 'in-laws' he's more determined than ever to escape, but slowly he finds his feelings changing as he see that Quinn can be trusted. Eventually, of course, he submits to Quinn's seduction, and they get their HEA.

The whole story is very formulaic. While the author does a pretty nice job of world-building, the characters were rather flat, and the plot's been done to death. And that's what made it such a frustrating read -- because there were sparks of humor and originality that unfortunately, went nowhere. Del's almost snarky; Quinn's almost more than a cardboard cut-out. But sadly, what promised to be a fun story with smart dialogue and vivid characters just never developed.

A little unexpected but fun

I expected a cute little space story and at first, it seemed like that's what I found. I couldn't help laughing at the predicament Del found himself in. I wasn't sure what to think of Quinn but he seemed sincere. I liked watching Del get himself into trouble. But then he got himself kidnapped and things got a little scary for him. I didn't like that part at all. I needed Quinn to get there and save him. What I liked about their relationship was that Del didn't just fall into Quinn's arms. I didn't love that he tried to runaway but I understood it. And I liked his feistiness, especially with Quinn's Second Father and the General. He wasn't a doormat but fought for what he wanted. I'm so glad there's more to this series. I can't wait to read more of these guys.

Liked it a lot ,worth the money spent

Interesting book though it portrays (human males) as whiny and not able to commit even after saying he would. You feel for both of them ,frustration and confusion and a longing for just some normalcy to cope with being together. I wasn't sure at first but the more I read the more I wanted to know that would happen. Looking forward to the other two books

Good but a bit to silly at times to take seriously.

I enjoyed the story and character development but spanking on a spaceship and killer perverted trees are a bit much. Makes it a bit difficult to accept as a serious read.

I went in to this with open eyes, that is to say I wasn't expecting a terribly deep story, rather somehting fun to pass the time on the bus. And that is what I got.

Del gets drunk and accidentally mates an alien soldier, who also happens to be royalty and who can change his new mates body so that he'll be able to bare children.

As I said, the plot wasn't riveting, and Del, the other MC was all over the place as far as characterization goes. The beginning seemed to be better written, and I was a bit surprised when the info mentioned the author haveing raised two children. There was a lot of caps-abuse, which made the story seem juvenile somehow.

Still, there were good parts. The stroy wasn't pretentious but straightforward entertainment, unashamedly. The way Del was treated when he escape/was kidnapped, was horrible, but nicely written. The weird alien would-be-master and the voice muting collar were clever.

Off to reading the second part.

Two stars.

Whoooo boy. This was an ultimate suck, and I don't think I even made it to 5%. SOOOOOooooo much awful mate-related things, like "oh, our bond isn't official yet, but if you want to break it I WILL THREATEN TO DISCIPLINE YOU AND ALSO BECOME REALLY SCARY. But really I'm not a monster, and will protect you from all potential harm, my mate, and also our bond is for LIFE, even if you were drunk when you agreed to it, and it hasn't been consummated yet."

There's not really anywhere good you can go from there.

I love sci-fi with cultural and language barriers so I was really excited for this series, but the consent issues just killed it for me. Del is stuck in a mating that he entered into drunk and though the consummation doesn’t happen while he’s drunk, nothing about the story made me think he actually had a choice by the time it did happen. “Pheromones” are used as a way to skip over actual relationship development. Also, Del goes through a lot of trauma, but the focus is always on how it made Quinn feel and how Del messed up.

Alien m/m "romance"

3 stars-

This was like reading a cheap knock off version of an alien m/m romance. There was so much happening and it was always crazy. Del's an emotional human and Quinn is the stoic alien. It felt almost too formula with not enough details. You don't really learn much about the alien culture ect.

I'm sad that it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be.

Probably won't read the rest of the series.

Read them all

Did it backwards, but finally read all three books and enjoyed they. They had elements of everything I like in a story. Humor, drama, sex, quirky characters, dumb bad guys. I also like that the editing was good.

I really don't know what to say about this... it was funky? Good if you're just looking to read something chaotic and random. Kind of like a filler read. Just some gay shenanigans. I cant like... read into it deeply or philosophically because it's just a very surface level read [not an insult]

This is the first published book by this author, although you would never know that Christine Wright wasn’t a seasoned writer.
Del Foster wakes up to the surprise of his life. Finding out that he has accepted what he at first thinks of as a position on a starship, but finds out that he is mated to the Captain instead. The plot is fast paced and the surprises keep coming as Del tries his best to escape his fate. Although once he begins to learn more about his mate, Captain Quinn; the less he wants to leave and the more he wants to explore what being a mate to his Captain means.
Captain Quinn is a very respected and feared member of his species. He shows his new mate Del a surprising amount of patience while trying to keep him out of trouble (that Del finds himself in anyway), and disciplining him to teach him how to live this new life. Love this story! Very original and I can’t wait for the next installment.
Great job Christine Wright, Keep up the good work!

Read February 2021

A simple & somewhat sexy MM sci-fi romance. There are few descriptions or details—hardly anything about the characters or the world they live in. The writing is decent.

The rating hovered between 2 and 3 stars. Some parts I enjoyed reading, and it did hold my attention. I settled on 2 stars because I found Del increasingly annoying as the story went on. I can't understand how Quinn, from a species known for being overly sensitive and short-tempered, could tolerate him. Despite being described as "grumpy," Quinn seemed surprisingly patient and long-suffering with his mate, who acted like a hormonal teenager.

Recommended for those who want light, sitcom-like entertainment rather than a full-length, in-depth story.

Edited to Add: Book 2 was a DNF.
