Reading CC is like biting into a warm cookie, wrapping yourself in a robe pulled straight from the dryer, or stepping into a cold movie theater on a hot summer day.
It's FEEL GOOD central.
At 39, Steve is a young widower. He has a 20-year-old son, Mike, he adopted with his much older (recently deceased) partner.
Tanner is 22 and an honest-to-goodness virgin. Tanner is friends with Steve's son and has had a crush on Steve since he was 16 years old.
I loved Steve's attempts at flirting, which of course went right over Tanner's head.
Tanner is adorable, but a little clueless and not the sharpest tool in the shed. Tanner didn't read as a particularly dynamic character, which was a little problematic since he's our first-person narrator.
Steve has a medical condition that's central to the story but not really discussed. I wanted more details about Steve's treatment. This is an important, complex topic, and it wasn't given enough page time.
There isn't a lot of plot here. It's mostly smiles, touches, and passionate first-times.
The story was over far too quickly (mostly because CC's writing is SO accessible) but filled with steamy bits and moments of pure sweetness.
Recommended if you're in the mood for a warm cookie or two. This one's delicious, and it'll be gone before you know it.

I've got a song stuck in my head.
Except my version goes "You know I wish that I had Jesse's guy! I wish that I had Jessie's guy! Where can I find a fellow like that?"
*clears throat* Anyway.
Tanner is a shy 22 year old virgin who has major crush on muscular 39 year widower Steve Faus (aka Jesse's guy). Steve's son (Tanner's best friend) convinces Tanner to visit Steve to make sure he's doing alright. This quickly leads to smuff. I'm talking about smut and fluff, people, something at which Cardeno excels. Tanner and Steve are just so sweet and sexy together.
I only have a couple of teeny tiny niggles. Both are just my own thing, really. First, I do like how Cardeno creates characters that know each other before the start of the novella (which is true of both this one and the first book in the series, McFarland's Farm). That way it doesn't feel totally unrealistic when they start whipping out the "I love you's." However, in this book I still felt like the relationship between Tanner and Steve happened quite suddenly. I was as shocked as Tanner when Steve started flirting with him. (Though what the hell did I think was going to happen? It's a freaking romance novel.) Maybe that's because Steve's a widower. Yeah, it's been a year and a half, but I'm weird about widows and widowers. Normally I avoid books where someone's lost their life partner because I feel uncomfortable with it for whatever reason. But this is Cardeno and I couldn't resist -- and I'm glad I didn't.
My other niggle is the whole virgin thing. I love books with virgins but what's up with people who think that if they've never had a dick in their hoo haa (whether their hoo haa is a vagina or an anus) they're still a virgin? Tanner and Steve spend a week sharing a bed, sharing bodily fluids, but they agree Tanner's still a virgin because there hasn't been any of the old in and out. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the first deep dickin' scene, but in my mind if you're picking flakes of cum off your stomach, or any other area, you are no longer a virgin.
Anyway, this is a sweet, fluffy, feel good read -- just what we want most in a Cardeno book. I definitely recommend it. Also, at the very end of this novella there's a really lovely dedication from Cardeno to a friend who seems to have passed on. *can't speak* *verklempt* It is so touching and I love what it says about friendships. The dedication alone is worth the price of admission.

Honestly....
....I mean it was fine. I could take it or leave it.
I can appreciate the fact that it was low angst, a definite comfort read. It had some good steam.
It wasn't my least favorite Cardeno C read! So there is that.
I think, we just aren't compatible Cardeno C and I.

Cardeno C and I have not had a smooth relationship. There's no in between- I either love it or I don't. This book, though, made the fluff lover in me soooo happy!
This is a low angst, feel good love story of Steve a 39-year-old widower and Tanner his son's 22-year-old friend. Tanner has always harbored a secret crush on Steve never believing that anything would ever come of it.
What I loved:
*Tanner. He was so sweet, loyal, and lovable. He brought out this protective streak in me and wanted nothing but his happiness.
*Steve. Despite his age, he was kind of innocent and his attempts at flirting were absolutely adorable.
*Mike, Steve's son. You'll find out why when you read the book.
*Jesse. Even though he has passed during the time the story is taking place- his big heart is always felt.
*These two communicated and I loved it. There were no silly misunderstandings sometimes used age gap books.
*The romance. I was in swoon heaven.
*The dedication. I'll just leave it at that.
The story is told from a first person POV- which I normally LOATHE, but I didn't mind it here at all. Tanner was such a pleasure to read I loved seeing things from his perspective. On top of that, Steve's dialogue made it easy to know how he felt so I never wondered what he was thinking.
Going in don't expect a heavy plot or lots of twists- cause you'll not find them here. This is a simple loving story that is chicken soup for the heart. 5 Stars!!

Jesse's Diner is a comfort read, perfectly suited to kicking back in front of a roaring fire, or in my case, kicking back on a lounge chair at the pool, and just enjoying a sweet, yet hot, tale of new beginnings and hope for new love.

Paul Morey is a comfort narrator for me. I know what I'm going to get with his performances, and I am never disappointed. For Jesse's Diner I thought he perfectly captured the almost innocence of Tanner, as well as Steve's more protective maturity. I loved his portrayal of Mike - played perfectly without being over the top.
All in all it was a great narration for a wonderful story!
When I heard this was being released next week I'll admit I started wishing on a star. Because I really, really wanted to read this.
And then I was granted an ARC. Which just tells you wishes really do come true!
Jesse's Diner doesn't disappoint! It perfectly embodies the collection's name by being about the hope between two men who aren't perfect, but are perfect for one another.
Tanner is sweet, unassuming, and has had the BIGGEST crush on Steve for years. It turns out that his crush isn't as one sided as he thought. What follows is a sweet courtship and romance that just melted me. I absolutely loved the elements in this, and several of the topics are hugely relevant and, I thought, handled beautifully.
I'll admit my biggest complaint is that I wanted more time with the guys.
I loved it and can very easily HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!

I started this all buoyed up from listening to Perfect Imperfections, it sounded a cosy little hurt/comfort story but I struggled all the way through. I can see the intended story if I lean back and squint sideways but I'm a confirmed curmudgeon; not one to highlight I ended this with lots of markers, everyone a point where I cringed!
The story starts with them getting to know each other better which was more info-dump than casual conversation, it then jumps ahead so gauchely I checked thinking there was a chapter or two missing, but no. No chance to see any chemistry just young innocent Tanner crushing hard then out of nowhere big Steve is full-on flirting. Too much, too sudden, nothing to lead into it.
The decider on liking this book is very much on whether you like Tanner. The whole way through I was waiting to hear of a brain aneurysm or him being dropped on his head as a baby... he came across 'simple' often unable to follow a conversation, constantly drifting off. Yet we're supposed to belief him a fancy chef capable of running a cafe. Bad choice for sole narrator.
Then there's Steve. Big, strong, magazine fitness model, aggressive, competitive, gentle, reasonable, thick fingered, muscular arsed - Steve, with his giant thick veined cock. I got sooo fed-up of hearing how big he is, how hot he is, how please be a droid-head, hulk out and put me out of my misery he is. He's Tanner's fantasy - the problem with fantasies is they are just that -fantasy- not real. We don't get to see anything of him the person, except through Tanner's besotted eyes. The more I heard of Tanner's 6year crush the more uncomfortable it made me feel. In a sane world there'd be an intervention not encouragement.
Poor deceased Jesse. There was no tangible grieving for him. Grief is subjective but 18months isn't a long time, if he was half the fixer suggested he'd have had more impact on the people remaining. His husband seemed almost relieved, not having to travel anymore. His son looked sad for a moment just don't blink. He was Tanner's mentor but Tanner's whole focus was Jesse's widowed hubby.
What the hell was that little reveal thrown in there at the end?
Just no. None of it, the whole thing was a cringe-fest for me. It needed some substance, a little angsting. It desperately, desperately needed a different choice regards pov.

4.5 Stars! An endearing, tender, touching and inspiring love story!
A charming May/December romance with Cardeno C.'s unique spin on relationships that always starts with friendship and journeys into love!
Tanner's timid nature and naivety made him a genuine character who was utterly charming and adorable. Steve was a loveable bear of a man whose gentle nurturing ways with Tanner captured my heart. There is a significant age difference between Steve and Tanner but in no way was it an issue for me. In some ways it was quite evident, particularly pertaining to sexual intimacy, Tanner had absolutely no sexual experience what so ever, but Steve's patient and caring schooling brought him up to speed quickly, and as they continued to bond inside and outside the bedroom their relationship blossomed into a forever love.
Mike, Steve's son, was a hoot. He was a typical 20-year-old, feeling his oats and embracing the college sex-perience, but he was also a good friend, caring son and added a nice element of humor to the read.
Even though Jesse had passed, his presence was felt throughout the story and readers got a sense of what an incredible man he was. His wisdom, caring nature and concern for others came through loud and clear. I mourned his death along with the characters in the book.
If I had one complaint it was my disappointment in not getting a little peek at the characters from the first book, McFarland's Farm, only a passing mention. Since Jared frequented the diner in his book I was hoping we could catch up with him and Lucas, but it was not to be. I'm sure it won't upset other readers, but I loved those characters so much, I just wanted a glimpse!
While the foundation for the story is the union of Tanner and Mike, it's also about four men who bond through family, friendship and the death of the diner's namesake. There was some sad, but it's also very uplifting, heartwarming, steamy, and even humorous. Cardeno C. took all these elements and combined them together for an enjoyable charming read!

Jesse's Diner was a surprisingly emotional romance. I wasn't expecting if from such a short read, but the author managed to pack in a lot of emotion. Grief plays a central role, Steve having lost his husband over a year ago. I really cared for these character's and wanted nothing but the best for them
It's an age-gap and best friend's dad romance. The spice was nice, and Tanner and Steve's relationship made for an interesting read.

Cardeno C. is my crack. You know, I need it from time to time to keep me going. If you need something uplifting, fluffy, warm and aww inducing, this is
Despite some niggles I really enjoyed this story. Because :
The "I have a crush on your hot dad" or "I have the hots for my son's best friend" theme is among my favorites.
Delicious age gap. Steve is 39 years old and Tanner is 22.
Comfort-healing theme. Steve is a widower and Tanner is a loner who never felt he belonged somewhere. I liked the fact that Steve has no hang-ups about pursuing Tanner. He did love his late husband but he didn't let his ghost haunt his new relationship with Tanner.
Very steamy scenes. Tanner was a virgin, he hadn't even been kissed before and Steve was all about showing him the tropes.
Then there is the issue of Steve's health. This is a big deal, it concerned both men and I felt it was downplayed a little. I think that this plot point should either be discussed properly or not be there at all.
Tanner was adorable but way too naive, sometimes it seemed almost too much. But then again, it's not everyday that your friend's hot dad wants to date you.
This is a short story but despite the length, all CC's stories seem complete to me.
Recommended for a quick, warm read that will leave a smile on your face.

Hmmmm…
Well Cardeno C is an auto-buy for me and I pretty much have determined I’m ok with whatever I’m gonna get with this author. Typically it’s sweet. Typically it’s smutty. Typically I like it.
So why read a blurb?
Well, May-December romances aren’t really my favorite. And to make matters worse, the whole DILF-to-lover storyline doesn’t ever really work for me. Maybe it’s because none of my friends had hot parents. And maybe it’s because I never stayed in touch with friends’ parents as an adult. But, I just don’t…get it? And that’s my issue, I realize. It just .does.not.compute. on my scale of what I want to read.
So Tanner is a 22-yr old diner owner. He inherited when Jesse, the father of his childhood best friend, dies. Jesse’s widower is 39-yr old Steve. Tanner has crushed on Steve forever. And that’s the setup.
Well…it’s not just the setup. It doesn’t actually go that much deeper or farther than that. Do they get together? Of course they do. Is it the perfect relationship for the rest of time? Of course it is. Are there tiny challenges along the way? Of course there are. But none of it took me any deeper.
To be honest, I didn’t buy the attraction. Especially not from Steve’s side. And though I’m told things about both of them, I didn’t feel I knew either of them. And pretty much the first half of this very short book was Tanner acting like a randy teenager lusting over Steve’s every move. Not convincing me that an almost 40 year old man is gonna find some depth in this kid.
Thing is…I liked Tanner enough. And I liked Steve enough. And there were some interesting surprises along the way. But, it didn’t all pan out…not in a cohesive way, not in a way that challenged my emotions, and not in a way that will make this memorable for me.
It was okay.

Jesse's Diner was just the low angst sweetness that I have come to know and love from Cardeno C.. This story was the perfect way to spend an afternoon, relaxing. Jesse and Steve were easy to like and their sexytimes were delicious.
Tanner has had a crush on his best friend's dad, Steve, since Tanner was 16. And it was a crush he never outgrew. He feels a bit guilty for it now, because Steve's longtime partner, Jesse, died about a year and a half ago and Jesse was the closest thing to a real father that Tanner ever had. Jesse took Tanner under his wing and taught him how to run the diner and how to cook and even left Tanner the diner when he died. Tanner has always been a little unsure of himself, but in the diner, he feels more confident. But Tanner is a lonely young man. He's never had a boyfriend, or a date, or even a kiss. He's so shy and no one compares to the man he feels he could never have.
Steve and Jesse had been together for 20 years before Jesse died. Jesse was a lot older than Steve, but when Steve and his friends came through Hope when Steve was 19, they connected and Steve never left. They adopted a son and lived as a family and Steve and Jesse were happy. After mourning for 18 months, Steve is feeling ready to move on. He's changed jobs and decided to work on the rest of his life. At 39, he's still young. And he has his eyes on Tanner. Yeah, there's a sizable age difference, but Tanner is older than his years would suggest. He's responsible and has always been quite mature.
I loved how clueless Tanner was during the time that Steve is courting him. It was so adorable just how innocent he was, and Steve never once made him feel inadequate for his inexperience. Steve has quite a nurturing streak. Jesse's Diner embodies everything that a town called "hope" should. And, though, Jesse's Diner is the second book in the Hope series, it completely stands on its own.
So if you are in the mood for a short read that is low an angst, but high on sweetness, give Jesse's Diner a try.

Steve and Jesse had been together for 20 years before Jesse died. Jesse was a lot older than Steve, but when Steve and his friends came through Hope when Steve was 19, they connected and Steve never left. They adopted a son and lived as a family and Steve and Jesse were happy. After mourning for 18 months, Steve is feeling ready to move on. He's changed jobs and decided to work on the rest of his life. At 39, he's still young. And he has his eyes on Tanner. Yeah, there's a sizable age difference, but Tanner is older than his years would suggest. He's responsible and has always been quite mature.
I loved how clueless Tanner was during the time that Steve is courting him. It was so adorable just how innocent he was, and Steve never once made him feel inadequate for his inexperience. Steve has quite a nurturing streak. Jesse's Diner embodies everything that a town called "hope" should. And, though, Jesse's Diner is the second book in the Hope series, it completely stands on its own.
So if you are in the mood for a short read that is low an angst, but high on sweetness, give Jesse's Diner a try.

Jesse’s Diner is a low-angst story about a 39 year old widower and a 22 year old shy virgin.
With that description I thought I would be in heaven. But the story didn’t work for me. There were some nice parts, but overall I was bored.
Tanner was cute, awkward and I did like him. Steve was just weird. I’m not sure why I feel that way, but I couldn’t connect with him at all.
The romance was unassuming and I was left feeling a bit empty.

Another surprise in this series. 3.9 - 4⭐
This was quite a funny, emotional story of a widower getting another chance at love and a young guy who's alone, a bit awkward and has an enormous crush on him.
It was a good one, I liked it.

"So what if Steve Faus tripped every single one of my buttons? I was twenty-two, not sixteen, and a hot guy shouldn’t scramble my brain into oblivion. Not even a guy with a tall, muscular body, thick black hair, piercing blue eyes, and a deep soothing voice. Oh, who was I kidding? I was sunk."
Mike, the son, has a task to bring Jesse and his living dad Steve together, so he sends Jesse to check up on the very depressed Steve (he wasn't depressed).

Jesse has very entertaining inner monologues. He simply freezes whenever Steve's around, besides he's a virgin and hasn't wanted to be with anyone else since he's met Steve, so for a crush this big I'm thinking the whole town saw it from a mile away, so it's interesting that Steve had absolutely no idea.
"I had nearly swallowed my tongue the first time I’d seen six foot, five inch, two hundred twenty pound former college football player Steve Faus, and six years later, my reaction to the older man was only slightly less humiliating. Thankfully, Steve either didn’t notice my obsession with him or he was too polite to mention it."
Their interactions were funny and cute, Tanner was adorably awkward and completely jumped in when the chance of actually being with Steve presented itself.

I’d achieved those goals without too much trouble. Steve's POV was badly missing, since we find out Steve has also had a crush on Tanner. But Steve was married and has been a widower for like a year and a half and then later on we also find out Steve's husband actually saw and sensed this crush, so Steve's POV was absolutely mandatory in this case.
When Steve finally makes a move and just lays it all out, tells Tanner what he wants and feels, it's a lot. I think a little more time and tension between the main characters would be better for the story, but as it was, they just immediately jumped into a serious relationship. It was a done deal, right off the bat.
Steve lost a bit of edge there. He was almost too nice and bland for a moment. More effort could be put in them talking about their crush more and step by step getting to know each other. It was too serious too fast.
Another thing I want to address is the two age gap relationships that are mentioned here.
First is Steve's and Jesse's. This is an age gap relationship I wasn't fond of. Steve was 19 years old when he met a 20 years older Jesse, he's been kicked out of his home, he had a few substantial problems and it's said that Jesse didn't support Steve contacting his parents and making amends because then he'd walk out. Steve was jobless and penniless when he met Jesse.
So this is definitely not the same age gap relationship that Steve now has with Tanner, who's 22 years old, has his own business and has been working for quite a few years, he also lives alone, so he's independent and also very much older than being barely legal. A few steps closer to an adult with a fully developed brain, if you will.
So, a big difference. First one I don't support, not at all. The second I'm all for. Tanner knew exactly what he wanted and if things went south, he could leave, and would probably do so.
Steve's former relationship also didn't sound as good. His former partner needed a lot of personal space, so Steve was constantly away from home for work. He was almost never there. He didn't seem quite happy. He also never contacted his parents again, which I understand, of course, but I'd expect he would've tried at least once in 20 years, no? Maybe not.
The ending is again abrupt and as is typical for these short stories from this author, we don't get an epilogue.

I want to sit in Jesse's diner, order pie, and read the books the receipts come in, to see what the people before me have written.
Actual books, people! I might never leave.
Tanner owns Jesse's diner. He's a twenty-two year old virgin, who keeps to himself, keeps himself busy, and tries not to drool too much when his crush, Steve, comes into the diner from time to time.
It's not so much the fact that Steve is his best friend's father that keeps him from making a move; the difference in years means nothing to him. It's the fact that Steve is recently widowed, and the husband of his former mentor - the man who gave him a family, and a future. But when his best friend, Mike, calls in a favor to check in on his Dad, Tanner is helpless to refuse.
Steve is ready to date again, and he has his sights set on Tanner. The age gap may not be an issue, but his health condition could be.
Except, it wasn't.
It was barely explored. It was kind of glossed over, and it just didn't matter to Tanner.

I was kind of hoping for more from this one. The blurb sounded delicious, but it was just meh, in my opinion.
I loved Tanner though. He's so clueless, it's cute. I didn't find it annoying at all. He just didn't understand people and they just had to be blunt and straightforward for him to understand. Yeah, I just adored Tanner.

First I want to say that the dedication at the end of the book left me with tears.
This was a tiny little story that touched me so deeply. I have no idea what it is about, but it was amazing!
Back to the main story-
I loved how shy and clueless Tanner was:

While Jesse’s Diner is somewhat sexy, it’s not particularly steamy. It isn’t angsty. It isn’t dramatic. There’s no big alpha hero or really over-sexed twink. What Jesse’s Diner is, is humorous, light-hearted and sweet, with some social commentary. Tanner, the primary voice, is guileless. I like guileless. He’s not a complex character – he’s accepting of his life, he likes his own company, is socially awkward, works hard, is respectful, likes where he lives, and is not too keen on broadening that horizon, and even when he fantasised about Steve prior to Jesse’s passing, he would never ‘cut someone else’s lunch’. All good qualities, in my opinion. Likewise, Steve is a decent, straightforward and patient guy. He’s honest about his status, prepared to give Tanner time to digest it fully, particularly given he’s never been with anyone else, and he’s kind. Cardeno C has written a gentle novella here and I think anyone wanting to spend a few hours relaxing, or maybe cheering themselves up by reading something hopeful and sweet, will enjoy Jesse’s Diner. One more thing, I don’t know if the dedication at the end was for someone in Cardeno C’s life but it was incredibly moving.

JESSE'S DINER is another sweetly sexy, romantic and swoon-y story from one of my favorite authors! Cardeno C. is my go-to author when I want a feel-good, sweet but very sexy romance. Jesse's Diner fits the bill and although it is a novella in the Hope series, you don't need to have read book #1 first to become involved in the story of Steve and Tanner.
Steve has become a widower at the ripe "old" age of 39 (although for me, that is young!) He and his partner had adopted Mike, whose best friend Tanner runs a diner in town.
Tanner has always had a crush on the older Steve, but never acted on it. Now that Steve is single, Tanner is afraid to make a move. For one, he is a virgin, and the other reason being that Steve is still in mourning for his partner Jesse. Tanner is also extremely shy and has no idea how to go about flirting or showing his interest in Steve.
There is a bit of tension in this book with a reveal that comes early on in the book. It is dealt with sensitively and with care by the author.
The humor in this book comes from Tanner's innocence and huge crush on Steve, who obviously has tons more experience sexually than Tanner, but Steve has never really dated either. This story is just a sexy, romantic story with a happy ending, just like all of CC's books. This novella will give you a few hours of pure pleasure and escapism, and isn't that what reading romance is all about? Another definite recommend from me for this sweet, passionate novella!

I enjoyed this so much more the second time around. The audio was lovely to listen to.

I thought this was a sweet story but I was bored. The one thing I did like is the way the story shows a person living with HIV. It was very up to date and affirming. I also like the characters but as a whole the story just felt as if not much happened.
