I saw this whilst leaving a review on Amazon so as you do I one clicked it mainly because it states that it's dark, secondly the reviews are wicked, thirdly the cover, and last but not least that freaking synopsis grabs you by the throat demanding that you read it!!
This will be my first time reading anything by this author

Well. I went into this thinking that no way the words "dark" and "romance" could go together and to be honest worried it was going to be so extreme I would want to put it down and avoid it.
Quite the opposite happened. I devoured Defaced in hours and it left me wanting more.
Whilst this book for me was pure fantasy and escapism it did not detract from my like of it. It's easy to read, simply written that doesn't require too much brain strain. It's not literary prose but then again it's not supposed to be. It's simplistic entertainment that I can see others have enjoyed too.

The books starts off quite dark BUT not so much so that you can't stomach it, so don't run away from this type of read just yet. We get insight's into Monster's childhood and upbringing and also the life of Lily until the two storylines come together as their worlds collide, it might be an orchestrated meeting of the two but by the end of the book I was so torn with feelings of how it was still such a wrong journey to romance but yet cheering inside. It's one of those books.
At first I was really mortified at what had befallen Lily, angry for her, angry at Monster and lots of other things. Things changed as the plot rolled out, more came to light but still this is NOT a romance of the average kind. But hey? If you have picked out a dark romance book you are not expecting champagne, roses and a perfect journey to happy ever after.
I ended up LOVING Monster as a character, I though the elements of light and shade were great in him. With Lily, whilst I found thoughts she had and some actions somewhat unrealistic as to what may have really gone on I enjoyed having her grow on me as a character also. Overall this was entertaining and I am really glad I took a gamble on something a bit different for me. Would I read Marissa Farrar's next book in the series? Hell yeah! 4 happy stars from me for Defaced.

When I saw this book on NetGalley I loved the description and cover! I hadn’t heard yet from this author so I checked her other books on GoodReads and noticed she mainly writes Paranormal/Fantasy which is a genre I rarely read. So I double-checked this book and since it isn’t that genre I requested it.
This well written dark romance feels like a modern version of Beauty & The Beast which is one of my favourite fairy tales! I won’t reveal to much about the story but it’s about a damaged young woman. She loves her job to make people beautiful on the outside and happy on the inside. Because of what happened in her past she distances herself from people to protect herself so except for her patients she has no one. Monster has been sheltered his whole life by his ruthless, hard father. As the name says he feels like a monster and doesn’t show himself to anyone because his issue might be seen as a weakness. He needs Lily’s skills and orders her abduction. This is a wonderful story of two people overcoming their own issues and growing closer while they do.
There were several back flashes in this story which were very helpful to understand Monster. Monster is an intense, mysterious man who is never tought how to respectfully behave with a woman. He has some issues but with how he was raised those are understandable.
I love dark reads but often it is about women abducted to become a sex slave. This one is different and I liked it. I also loved how sassy Lily remained during her captivity. You can also feel their attraction right from the beginning.
This book ends on a HFN but I’m still looking forward to the next book in this series which will be released spring 2016

Defaced is a dark psychological thriller adult romance, containing sex and violence.
In short, it is about a woman who is kidnapped by a man, and the way the dynamics of their relationship changes over time. This story definitely has a feel of Beauty and the Beast, which I love.
I liked the two main, somewhat damaged characters in this book. Lily and Monster's characters develop well throughout the whole story, leaving the reader asking questions almost to the very end. I loved the way we gradually get to know the characters more and more as the story progressed. My view of the characters at the beginning, to my opinion of them by the end, completely changed.
This is the first book I’ve read by Marissa Farrar, but it won’t be the last. Although this is the first book in a trilogy, I did find the ending satisfying, but it has also left me wanting more.

You can't help but feel bad for Monster. He's one of those characters that, even though he's doing all these horrible things, you know he doesn't really know any better because of how he was raised. His father, ugh...his father was such an a-hole. There was so much that could have been done with a character as deeply scarred as him...
BUT, I hated Lily. Her character got on my nerves on every level, from making stupid decisions to just flat out not making any damn sense. The ENTIRE book, a huge deal is made over Lily's fear of being touched. Nobody knows why; it's dragged on and on ad nauseam. She won't tell Monster; she never even told her therapist the true reason behind it. At the very end we're finally told, and she says, Of course he thinks that. Every single hint the author has given us leads us to believe that is the case. When she tells him the true reason behind her aversion to touch, he replies, "But...I don't understand what this has to do with your aversion to touch." Well, buddy, that makes two of us. She had to spell it out for Monster which conveniently spelled it out for the reader, but it's still a stretch, especially because her logic falls apart when you look at her behavior, i.e. jerking away from a woman's hand on her elbow. It just doesn't make sense, and I resent that the author worked so hard to mislead us just to give us this BS reason instead.
Then there's her stupid decisions--running straight into gunfire and explosions, or when they won't let her use the bathroom, pissing her pants and complaining about sitting in the puddle instead of pulling them down and moving away from where she's sleeping to do her business. Smh...
I also get that it's a trilogy, but the ending is really awkward--not a cliffhanger and not really wrapping it up, just kind of meh.

The story had me very intruiged and I read it kinda fast. I get why Monster hate his birthmark after his been trough but it feelt kind of weird that the whole darkness of the book was due to a birthmark. In the beginning I thought it might be something like a Frankenstein story, which I think I would have preferred but it was an okay story.

I was very excited by the blurb of this book. The concept was different and I was looking forward to jumping back into the dark-romance genre. Sadly that is where most of the excitement ended.
Monster is our anti-hero; kept locked for his entire life, who has Lily kidnapped so that she can see to the reason why his father ensured no one ever saw his face. But it doesn’t take Lily long to start to see her captor for as something much more.
There are a lot of people so far that gave this really great marks, so I am certainly in the minority on this one. But I just didn’t really get the darkness that this book was expected to have. It’s not a genre that is simply about kidnapping someone and tossing in a love story that develops. There are so many aspects of creating characters that you have to find empathy with, that you have to be able to hate and grow to love; I just didn’t get that from Monster at all.
If you are new to the idea of dark romance, this might work for you – it doesn’t really push the boundaries. With readers who love twisted, dark romances (the worst, the better); this might be too vanilla for you.

This is the first book I've read by this author. It's her first dark story and I totally loved it.
Apart from reading a few teasers I basically jumped into this story blind and I'm so glad I did. The author had me gripped from start to finish. The writing is flawless and I liked how the author added her own uniqueness to the storyline.
The characters came across as real to me and I could understand their pain and fears.
Monster has been held captive all his life. He only knows what his father has taught him. He has grown up believing he's a monster.
Lily is kidnapped and held captive. She has known a life of solitude as her memories keep her in the past. She keeps everyone at a distance.
Both Monster and Lily are hurting from the past. Neither are sure how to move on. Can they help each other or will they cause even more pain for one another??
This book has dark themes so it isn't for the faint hearted. Having said that I thought the author did a great job and I'm looking forward to reading more of Monster and Lily's story.

A dark romance??? Uhh, I think not. At least, not by my standards. The darkest part was her kidnapping, but her owner was pretty nice, if you ask me. Especially for someone named Monster. I just couldn't connect with the story. Monster bares his soul to Lily during their 2nd convo and Lily (who hasn't let anyone touch her in 10 years) just lovessssss Monster's touch way too quickly. The ending was better because some action started. The sex scenes varied from ok to good. Probably won't read part 2.

3 "It's your soul that does that." Stars
With so many books encompassing the captor/captive story line there comes a fine line in setting yourself apart from the pack. Defaced interestingly provides a fresh take on this subgenre of romance. I was pleasantly engaged throughout the story and thought the darker elements working behind the plot were quite compelling.
Individually, both Lily and Monster held me captive. There's a subtle current through the story where we learn both of these are people are prisoners in their own rights. The history of Monster and the growth of Lily both provided excellent story lines. With the writing of Farrar each of these characters develop organically and being in Lily's POV gives great insight to the story and her mind frame. With Monster's history unfolding in pieces from his POV, the psyche of his character becomes even more intriguing. However, their relationship together I felt was a little lax from what I've come to expect in a romance. I felt their connection and I understood the depth of feeling however, the the amounts of time and the depth of passion between the two left me a bit put off. I wanted something grand from them as a couple because they both made such strides individually.
The story ends leaving the reader wanting more and I'm intrigued to find out the rest of the story in The Monster Trilogy. Farrar left the door wide open for significant development in their relationship and I can't wait to discover where she takes her readers.

This book was a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Lily was kidnapped and she now has a Master called Monster.
At first I thought so many things and she was there for a known reason but as we continue reading we see that the main reason was more "light" than we thought. Of course there is NO excuse for what he did why I did not understand why he did searched for help or his father. The excuse was lame.
The book is not that dark, yeah he is bad but I think he was made physicological like this so many years that he actually needs help to change or be better.
Lily was ok character I understand her fear and we could not know how we would react but her relationship if him change both of them. There were actually cute together.
Can't wait for the next one.

This is the story of Lily and Monster. Lily who doesn't want to be touched and Monster who doesn't want to be seen. This is indeed a dark story! For the most part of it, it was so intense, so on edge! I really liked it. The writing is very good. The story is said from Lily's POV except for few chapters that are from Monster's POV in order to show us how he became the man he was today. The plot was good and it troubled me in a good way. However the last chapters of the book felt kind of flat and rushed (and that's why I couldn't give 5 stars!)
Lily is a brilliant woman! She is amazing in her job and she has a clear way of thinking. During her capture, we see her going through all phases possible. It's nice to see that she is still human. She has a tender heart but also a strong character! I really liked her.
Monster is a young man who has been through hell since he was born. However I couldn't feel pity for him, at least not in the most part of the book, because he is not a good person! His words, not mine! Besides he doesn't want anyone to feel pity for him and this is something I admire! Deep in him, it's also a tender heart but it's well hidden.
The chemistry of Lily and Monster was beautiful! Their interactions were so intense and well tuned.
The end of the book felt a bit abrupt! I was reading and suddenly it stopped. There was no cliff hanger, no twist or surprise to keep me wanting more. It was nice how the story reached this point but I didn''t get a closure! Nevertheless, I still want to read the next book of the series as I want to read more of Lily and Monster.
I definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes a dark love story.

a very well thought out book that shows the dynamics of family and of abuse. what I liked about this book is that the main characters are people with real problems just like any others.
Lily is the chatacter who seems to be trapped by life or more to thr point not having one. her character is very good but I found her annoying at times as well. truly a good character who you could love or hate.
Monster what a name and while I think I felt more for this character because of how he was treated and what his life would be like. he was every bit the prisoner that lily was.

I shelved this one as dark reads but honestly I didn't get the dark part of this book. This book isn't dark at all. The premise is interesting but it just fell short. Sorry, I guess I'm part of the minority.

Defaced offers readers a very well put together story. The credit for this is in large part due to Monster's meticulously crafted back story. Without which, a large amount of both reader and character attachment (in the form of leading lady Lily/Flower) wouldn't have been possible.
It is only through learning of the horrors to which he was subjected throughout the majority of his life, that both we the audience, and she, his captive turned love interest comes to understand the man behind the madness.
Because Monster's back story spans from childhood into adulthood, we also get to see how the thoughts, interactions, and words said to him, as well as the internal dialogue that he had with himself changed over time.
Most of all, Monster's back story allows one to see how abuse can shape one's view of every aspect of the abused person's life. No aspect of Monster's life escaped the effects of his father's degradation.
As for Lily/Flower. She is for the most part, a relatively unremarkable leading lady. The one thing that she does have going for her is her strength of will. She does what she has to in any situation; to assure her survival.
Most of the story leading up to Lily's first meeting with Monster is pretty much standard Dark Romance fare as well.
Kidnapping
Trafficking
Transportation out of the country.
Attempted rape by captors.
What is a bit surprising, is the relatively 'hands off' approach that Monster takes with Lily. The sexual interactions that they share are almost tender. A far cry from the 'you're mine' necessary roughness that one expects in such situations.
The other issue created by said 'hands off' approach, is a decided lack of sex. What could have been a boiling cauldron of unleashed sexual ferocity on both of their parts, is toned down to a romantic simmer. The likes of which could be found in any mainstream novel.
The final detractor from this otherwise well done read, concerns the transition in Lily/Monster's relationship from captive/captor to lovers.
This is just a bit off. There is not enough time spent on their relationship at the point of said transition to make the emotional investment natural.
Given that this is the first novel in a series. It does make a very read worthy and compelling start.
Bear in mind that this is a dark read. As such, there are very graphic scenes of nonconcensual sex, violent sex, and kidnapping.
This read is not for those unafraid to face the dark side of love with and open heart and mind.

I love books where the author isn’t afraid to go dark and this is one of those!!! No Fade to black scenes here! However, the story felt really dragged out and super sloooooow despite being such a short book. The title is really clever though (perfectly fitting the storyline) and the characters are interesting!! I am glad I read it but don’t think I will continue reading the rest of the trilogy.

Defaced is surprisingly good and manages to successfully deliver on an interesting concept. Farrar presents tormented, developed characters and weaves them into an engaging plot. I only wish that this book could be slightly longer as I felt the ending was rushed. However, I would certainly like to continue the trilogy.

Thanks to The Book Club on Facebook I had heard of Marrisa before but never read any of her books. While looking through netgalley I saw this and so thought I would give it a go...and I really enjoyed it so am very glad that I did!
This is the first of a trilogy and what a great start. Lily has been kidnapped by a "monster" and taken out of the country. While she works out why we are given an insight to Monsters back story, an awful childhood of emotional abuse that has made him the man he is today, alone apart from his trusted staff. It's obvious from the start though that Lily is about to change Monster in more ways than one.
I loved the authors style of writing and this story was told in nice short chapters but I found it easy to read in just a couple of sittings. The back story delved into relationships with the people we love and how appearances can be deceptive. This is an erotic romance so expect some sex but it fits in well with the story. This is a raunchy Beauty and The Beast for modern adults with, although a trilogy, a nice rounded ending.
I will certainly read more by this author and in my copy of Defaced there was a preview for Cut Too Deep which I will download next.

I'm torn over the review of this book... I wanted to give it 5 stars...
Because of writing about human trafficking and sexual slavery, I have to research the subject and read lots of books on the matter. Hence why I read this book. I think that is why, unlike some reviewers, I was pleasantly surprised that this book wasn't as dark as some I've read. The beginning chapters made me believe I was in for another harsh gut wrenching ride (during the abduction), and I emotionally prepared for it, but this story turned into sympathy and empathy on a different level. Yes, Monster has some awful stories of his upbringing but I've read worse, and truly enjoyed this book's pacing.
In my opinion, this author took her time with allowing these two damaged characters to work through some deep (dark and disturbing to be more correct) issues, and had dialogue and inner dialogue that surprised me. I don't want to give details and ruin this ride for anyone.
This book would have been a 5 star book for me, that's how pleased I was with every page, but a shift happened towards the end that took me from the direction I thought we were headed. Maybe the author was preparing us for the sequel? Somehow my momentum stalled a little—not that action did—that actually picked up. I also would've liked a little more thought toward the girls that weren't as lucky as Flower/Lily. I couldn't help but worry for them. Lily did think of the girls but... Either way, this Marissa seemed to put a lot of thought into these two tortured souls, and I will definitely be reading more from this author. And I recommend this dark read that dances with a lighter side for a perfect blend.

The beginning of the book was great, drew me in and had me really glued to the pages, turning them eagerly to find out what was happening then "boom" my enjoyment was spoilt and my enjoyment in the book faded.

A great romance but the bounds of credibility were pushed too far when Lily folded and gave in to "Monster" demands. What pushed the bounds of credibility too far for me were for a woman who hated to be touched she went from flinching from a person's touch to feeling the stirrings of sexual attraction within a very short space of time all after being kidnapped and sexually molested (which to me is quite a trauma and would take time to recover from), surely a trusting relationship should be built up before allowing someone to touch them, not fear and domination. Another reason was the speed in which Lily folded and gave in to "Monster's" demands. According to the book Lily was used to being by herself, being a loner etc so being cut off in a room by herself for a week, with books to read, shouldn't lead to Stockholm syndrome so quickly, add to that fear of what was happening with no signs of kindness to encourage Stockholm Syndrome to build.
I loved the writing style and I was completely drawn in and if it hadn't have been for the above points I would have certainly given it at least 4 stars. Another thing that really did annoy me, and I'm not sure why, was his insistence on calling Lily, Flower.

Now, this is not your typical story. It is a little dark, but nothing like Pepper Winters dark. It is very well written and enjoyed this book. I read this book in two sittings. This is a story about a woman who has a fear of being touched and a man with issues of being seen. He seems disturbed in the beginning, but the author allows you to be in his shoes and see where he comes from. Lily in this story is a strong woman who learns a lot about herself when she is taken from her life. This was a very Good read!! I will definitely be reading the next in this series.

Snoozeville. This book was so boring. It dragged on soooooooooooooooo long. I think the book dictates every single thing thought that goes thru Lily's mind. Like EVERY thought, no matter how many times she thinks it. I couldn't make it past half way through the book. It was too repetitive. I get he was well educated, abused & neglected...OMG I don't need a dozen chapters reiterating it.

I enjoyed this book because it was an unexpected twist to the captured and kept trope. The beauty and the beast was strong in this one in all the right ways. But most importantly it followed along to true psychology.
This is a woman taken against her will to do a job, one that she's been using as a coping mechanism for a terrible tragedy. Lily was realistically frightened, and we get to watch the build up of her emotions until they explode on more than one occasion. She argues with her subconscious about falling for her captor. Suffers true lonelyness from isolation that many writers don't consider the true torture it is. And has to debate whether the truth of Monsters path makes up for the horrors of his present.
I would say telling us Lily's secret earlier or not at all in this book would have been a better move. It felt like a bit of a let down receiving it where we did after building it up for the entire book. While it was a powerful plot twist it wasn't played to the best of its ability considering it came right after the books big showdown.

September 16, 2024I get that the author's trying to paint the heroine in a realistic light, as in NOT HAVING AN INSTAGRAM MODEL type body, but come on, the way it was repeatedly said that she's 28, no longer young, her voluptuous curves turning into fat, she's dumpy...OMG these words were so depressingly self-degrading, I lost interest and my libido flew out the window.
So what does that make us women in their 30s or 40s? I'm insulted. She made a 28 year old seemed like an undesirable middle aged woman lol.

Loved this book
This book was really sad for me. The audio is really good. Made of feel more believable. There is slot of emotions in this story.
Monster was abused by his father. Lilly was taken and brought to Monster. She also has insecurities as well. Can she look past his insecurities? Will she be able to help him with treatment? Can Monster help Her?

This book was surprisingly good. But I feel like most books like this always ends the same way. I wasn't disappointed it's a great book. But I wish it wasn't like all the others that I have read. Maybe book two will be full of surprises?
