White-water rafting guide Liam Magee is a cowboy at heart—happy to return to his country roots at Thunder Mountain Ranch for his foster brother’s wedding. And when Hope Caldwell shows up as a guest…well, the occasion just got more interesting. She’s started looking at Liam like he’s one ride she couldn’t possibly resist, so why is she holding back? Hope can’t keep her eyes (and her sexy thoughts) from the hotness that is Liam. She’ll never let herself believe in love and happy endings—she learned that lesson the hard way—but maybe she can have a little fun while she’s on vacation. After all, there’s only so much trouble one cowboy can cause in a week…especially once the sun sets!

I listened to the audiobook on Hoopla. I liked the story and Abby Craden did a great job. I was impressed with Vicki Lewis Thompson’s writing. If I’d read this book 10 years ago I’d be looking for the other books in this series. However, my tastes have changed and this book had a fatal flaw that will keep me from reading any more books by this author. There was just too much sex. After reading so many romances I’m more interested in the story, and often skim through the sex scenes. If you like a lot of sex and a good story then I highly recommend it.

I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review and here it is: 3 stars.

I'm always happy to return to Thunder Mountain Ranch, and its wonderful cast of characters, and this is the sixth title in the series. This installment is all about the upcoming wedding of Damon and Philomena (Phil), but Liam Magee is the hot, hunky, cowboy hero, and he's got his eyes and heart set on Hope Caldwell, one of Phil's high school friends who will be attending the wedding. She's knows Liam because of her job at the concierge desk at a hotel in Cody, where Liam often drops off his river rafting clients. He's been subtly flirting with her for some time, but so far, he hasn't asked her out. Since they'll both be at the ranch for the wedding weekend, he steps up his flirting but Hope is resistant to the whole idea of dating. A long-time relationship with a man named Tom ended a year ago, and Hope has no intention of leaving herself open to that kind of pain again.

Hope's high school friends always knew that she was a writer and loved her creativity and imagination, but, when asked about her writing, she shuts down and simply says she gave it up. As a copy editor and poet who knows a large number of authors, I know that being a writer is who you are, not what you do, and that creativity is certainly not something you can just turn off.

Although Hope isn't looking for a relationship, she's certainly not opposed to sex, so when she agrees to a moonlight horse ride with Liam, it turns into a whole lot more, and they agree to a weekend of no-strings sex. When they discover that they'll each be at the ranch for a full week after the wedding, the weekend plan becomes a one-week plan, but again, Hope is in denial about an actual long-term relationship with Liam, who clearly wants more than that. The chemistry between these two characters is intense and the sex scenes are plentiful--almost too plentiful, and are definitely for the mature reader. While I love a hot sex scene or three, it's somewhat off-putting when they are substituted for the plot, which is slim in this novel, because aside from the wedding preparations and conversations among the other characters, not much else happens. As a character, Liam is clearly a cowboy to fall head over heels about--he's kind, sweet, sexy, gorgeous, thoughtful and very romantic. I found Hope a lot harder to like, even though Ms. Thompson is as good as it gets when it comes to writing smart, sassy dialogue.

When we finally learn more about Hope and what caused her to shut down emotionally and give up her writing, she becomes a bit more sympathetic, but all in all, I found this novel and it's lack of a plot to be the weakest of the series so far, and I wished that Liam had fallen for someone more likable.

Returning to Thunder Mountain is always a treat and while each of the characters are different I really like the special bonds that they have since the were there as kids.

In Cowboy after Dark we finally get Damon and Phil's wedding. Yippe! I loved them as a couple but the main star in this story was the oh so hot Liam. He has his eyes set on Hope. They have been flirting over time but now it's time to win Hope over. Hope isn't looking for a relationship because of how things went with her ex but with them both spending time on the ranch for the wedding things are about to get interesting and a little heated.

This couple might not have been my total favorite of this series but I did enjoy reading about them. I like how Liam didn't give up on Hope in the hopes something would happen between them. When Hope started to open up more I was like finally it's going somewhere but then she could shut down. I felt bad for Liam at times because it felt like he was paying for her exs betrayal with really had nothing to do with him but sometimes I know that's how it actually works even if it's not fair.

The sex scenes were on the hot side but as a couple I would have liked them to spend maybe a little more time together continuing to get to know one another more that way Hope didn't have so many trust issues with Liam.

Overall this was just an okay book for me but I will continue the series because these characters are definitely worth reading about. I'm excited to see who will be next from the Thunder Mountain Ranch.

Cowboy After Dark by Vicki Lewis Thompson

A contemporary romance that delivers it all. Characters you care about; hot sex; big connected families with a strong respected mother figure; a touch of humor in today's complicated world; and pure romantic emotional connections.
I love this author and series. You get to reconnect with prior couples and get a new romance and family support all at the same time. A very blessed world, even if things occasionally go wrong like an outdoor wedding that has to be moved inside because of rain.
Pure escapism.

This book was gifted to me. Hot and sexy Liam is a real hero. Hope needs a hero to help her heal. This is an interesting story, and very hot. It's another emotional story from Thunder Mountain, a very good series.

We have a new graduate from Thunder Mountain and of course when he comes back to visit he meets woman who is perfect for him. Liam and Hope strike sparks immediately but all is not well between them. She does not want anything but a one week fling. Getting her to change her mind is a huge job. This series has a lot of sex and sometimes not that much character interaction outside the bedroom. I like the fact that the two main characters had more interaction that did not involve sex. A fun story with two interesting main characters and a nice visit with characters from the previous books.

A nice, light-hearted read in the Thunder Mountain Brotherhood series. Cowboy After Dark has your signature Vicki Lewis Thompson feel, with wonderful characters and great banter. This book was a little light on the plot, but overall a quick, sexy read. Can't wait to finish out the series with Grady's story.

Author challenge read. Previously read another from this series - though cannot recall a thing about it, even with the characters appearing in this one too.
With my TBR list ever-growing, I refuse to waste precious reading time on books that just don't grab my attention.

Couldn't care for Hope at all, her reason for not wanting a relationship, the continued remarks about her creativity and why she uses such big 'author' words... *eye roll*... like Tallywacker.

Liam was kinda cute, but his instant love and his protectiveness over Hope was too much too soon.

I loved Hope and the way she talked at times, “on the contrary. Something is very right. You have a magnificent tallywhacker.” Liam is like the damn energizer bunny, “maybe, maybe not.” He grinned. “I might be out of ammunition. You never know.” She glanced down at his ***k, which was already responding. Meeting his gaze, she lifted her eyebrows. “I can’t explain it,” he said with a shrug. “I touch you and up it goes. That hasn’t happened since I was seventeen.” I liked this book, I loved Liam.

Liam is any girls cowboy dream... Hope is in need of a hero to give her hope again. Oh to be young again and fall in love with a member of the Thunder Mountain Brotherhood. This is a series I highly recommend... I'm looking forward to Grady and Sapphire... Preordered Cowboy Untamed.

Things left out

I love this series and this was another great book. This one brings a lot of the foster boys and their girlfriends back.

I just felt that somethings were left hanging in Hope's story. She still hasn't talked to her parents about the ex. There was talk of going to see Chelsea in Seattle. I was just left wanting more in this book.

Really disappointing. There wasn't much of a story to this book. The started their "fling" early and it went to the end. Missed the big emotional roller coaster. This book just didn't seem to bring it. A friend of mine read it and felt the same way I did.
