Alternate cover edition of ASIN B019G069AE

The past has a way of catching up with you.

If there's one thing that Tarot-reading magical artifacts hunter Sara Wilde has never been able to track down, it's the truth about her own past. But now a powerful new threat to the psychic community will take Sara back to where it all began: the last job she worked with Officer Brody Rooks as "Psychic Teen Sariah," the job that destroyed her life and sent her on the run. Because the enemy she fled all those years ago has returned... with a posse of demons as his personal entourage.

Worse, Sara's infuriating mentor, the dangerously seductive Magician, is pushing her to stretch her abilities and explore the very deepest reaches of her magic. But every demand draws her further into the spell he's weaving around her. And every challenge tests her vow to keep him at arm's length.

From the glittering chaos of Las Vegas to the Lost City of Atlantis, Sara must risk everything in a quest for vengeance that grows darker and more twisted with every step. To succeed she'll have to face the truth about her past, her abilities...and the impossible, unstoppable attraction she has to the Magician. A truth that will reveal her ultimate role in the war on magic.

Life is full of surprises when you are Born to Be Wilde.

Book three in the Immortal Vegas series aannnnnddd...there's some stuff relating to the lost continent of Atlantis, some more information on Sara's past, a peek into the Magician's past, a couple of new Arcana Council members to meet, Sara has to keep getting tattoos for...reasons. I'm not sure what those reasons are since they didn't seem to make any difference to Sara's astral travels at all. Honestly, the writing isn't great and most of the time it feels like so much smoke and mirrors meant to distract the reader from realizing that it's a bit of a hastily cobbled together mess. Frankly, I'm not really sure why I keep reading this series. All I can come up with is that I've been in a fluff-read mood lately and this seems to fit the bill. At least the l0ve triangle aspect seems to have fizzled out.

Series Gets Better and Better

4 Stars
First thing you need to know is we get plenty of Magician time and do does Sara! Yea for Stark giving the Magician his due.

Plus this is by far the best story in the series, as Sara comes full circle with her past. Stark hit me with a new big baddie, as really the Devil has shades of grey not black.

The connected kids in Europe seems to be just a money dump for Sara, as she is now totally invested in Las Vegas. I commend her wanting to save the kids, but she and Father Jerome haven't really fleshed out how they save the kids.

Stark gave me glimpses of the larger on goings in the collected community, but never does she get off track with her main plot.

As always Sara is a delightful character to read about. Sara's powers are expanding at a dangerous rate and the reason why is explained in the book.

For some reason Dixie rubs me the wrong way and it has nothing to do with Brody, as he is so last decade.
I am falling in love more and more with Nikki, as this girl is fierce.

Now I do wish that Sara and The Magician could connect in a quiet one on one like she does with the Devil. I need some quiet time for Sara, just a moment while the world around her spins out of control. It would enrich the series for me. Maybe them grab a bite after he heals her, those respite moments that really flesh out characters.

In the end this is a series not to be missed, especially for the sensual slow burn, that ends in a inferno!!

Where did it all go wrong? Well isn't that the million dollar question.

Unpopular opinion coming up. Let the trolling commence cause ain't be pretty.

Sara Wilde is an idiot of a heroine. An idiot of epic proportions. The council manipulates Sara und after revelation after revelation something niggles at her. Does she think about it? Nooooooooo of frigging course not. I mean it is obviously more fun to be a puppet to the council.

Numbnut Sara at her best peeps. Standing ovation for her lack of common sense. On top of that could the plot have gotten any more confusing than it already was. Probably not.

Sara's past catches up with her. To save the kids she is going to jump to Atlantis. Jump back with weapons to jump to the dimension of where the children are being held. Instead of freeing the kids she frees six of the Syx warriors from Atlantis or also known as Djinns. Only to then to jump back again to save the children. Exhausting and confusing.

The book doesn't lack originality so there is that. The writing style is solid but somewhat stretched out which isn’t my favorite. Short attention span here peeps. There is also a lot of repetitiveness.

I am quite disappointed I gave book 1 - 5* and book 2 - 4 *. So, giving this book 2* pains me. A series although with all the elements to make it good just isn't for me anymore. Got to cut my losses here.

*My Thoughts*

Born To Be Wilde is the THIRD installment in author Jenn Stark's Immortal Vegas series. Protagonist Sara Wilde is a tarot card user who hunts powerful artifacts as well as people for the Arcana Council lead by Magician Armaeus Bertrand. Armaeus has sent Sara around the globe collection artifacts that are considered dangerous. Sara's journey this time out, takes her from Germany, to Vegas, to Atlantis. Yes, that Atlantis. But, the most interesting aspect of this entire story is Sara's past has come home to roost, and someone has taken more than a keen interest in her.

"Born to be Wilde" puts up back in the paranormal world of Las Vegas. This time our story begins with Sarah being in Germany on a mission to retrieve an artifact for Armaeus. However, before she even begins another collector from her past confronts her and soon she realizes that there is a game afoot. When she arrives at the airport in Las Vegas, she sees posters of missing children she unsuccessfully searched for years ago. She also sees a picture of her younger self. Then the action begins as Sarah is fired at as she attempts to enter the limo provided for her. She is whisked away by Detective Brody Rooks and she also realizes that the man she believes kidnapped the children is behind the attack. Oh what a tangled web of intrigue.

As Sarah tries to untangle the mess that is her life, she comes face to face with the fact that the children are still alive and they need her help to rescue them. If she is to succeed she will have to rely upon every partnership she has forged and travel to world she thought were only myths like Atlantis. In doing so, she will returned more battered and bruised than she knew was possible but stronger too.

On the personal side of the equation, Sarah gets to explore her past and try to figure out her real parentage. She will be surprised at the results. Additionally, Armaeus, will briefly lose his immortality making a way for he and Sarah to explore the sensuous tension that has been building between them. My, my, my!

I really enjoyed this read even though at times all of the flittering away to other worlds kind of got on my nerves. Now that Sarah and Armaeus has broken the ice between them so to speak it will be interesting see where they will go. I can't wait to read the next book.

5 Stars... This series keeps improving with each book... Some of Sara's past is revealed and the secrets are explosive... Her parentage is partially shared and I look forward to seeing how that secret unfolds and the implications for the role Sara will play in the coming war on magic... We also witness Sara's abilities grow and change as she is entrenched in the Council's agenda and battling her past as it relates to her present and future... Action packed from start to finish with intriguing scenarios throughout; absolutely loved this read and look forward to the continuation of the series:)

Blast from the Past

Once again, Sara is travelling all over the place, but through psychic means as opposed to physical ones. She also gets injured quite severely nearly every time. She learns quite a few things, however. We also learn one half of Sara's true parentage. And meet some demons. Crazy times all around.

And that finally happened.

Spoilers for previous books…
The Egyptian trap had special arrows that have made the Magician mortal. This is disastrous for several reasons: he can’t be on the Arcana if he’s mortal; he’s still magic but he’s not as good at healing himself, and he could actually die or be killed. But, on the plus side, whatever thing about him that made Sara terrified of him enough to black out and shutdown when they got close to bumping uglies is gone. [oooh… rubs hands… rubs characters… pushes characters together…]
So her first job is to get the cup of the Valkyrie to heal him. Unable to resist treasure, she steals a small box that calls to her. [is she part dragon?]
Job done, she walks out of the airport and sees a wall of missing children posters. Her photo is amongst them. Detective Brody denies he had anything to do with them, but he updates her on the details of the case. Her life’s been so chaotic, they haven’t taken the time to do this.
“We’re already talking,” I snapped. “That’s what people do when they speak to each other, they talk. Usually in coffee shops, not in cars heading out into the Nevada desert.”
He slanted me a glance. “Do I make you nervous?”
“Presidential politics make me nervous, Brody. You just piss me off.”

I hear that.
But the thing Brody tells her that makes her world tilt, is that
The prime suspect for the abductions was a school counsellor named Viktor Dal. In one of her current vision leaps of intuition she understands that he’s the Arcana Emperor to the previously traitorous Empress, Roxie Meadows. Some of the Arcana have to be darker to balance the council itself. He’s also sending assassins to kill her and one of them helpfully name-dropped who sent him. *frowns*
Dixie knows Viktor and says he was a complete doll, or some such nonsense.
[Sidenote: that’s it… Dixie is DEAD to me. It may be that her name is too close to Roxie, it may be that she was BFF’s with Roxie, it may be that she’s desperately trying to get into the pants of Brody, it may be that she clearly has very poor judgement on character, or it may be that she hides her own Connected gifts, OR that she just doesn’t seem to be very helpful to Sara. Do NOT trust her.]
Nikki, on the other hand, stick to that girl like glue. All the six feet four size thirteen platform shoe wearing ex-cop trans glory of her.
In a convoluted and nutso plan, Viktor has all the children stashed in another dimension and guarded by demons; the Syx. Something about pure souls, waiting for them to grow physically large enough to hold a demon, release them into the human world… blah blah. Ten years is a second to demons so they’re happy to wait.
But being on another dimension won’t stop Sara from trying to rescue those kids. The names of those children are burned into her own soul. She was only a child when she failed to rescue them and she has beaten herself up about it ever since. She’s going to try, even if it kills her.
And it might. With a bit of help from Death, who prefers to be called Blue, Armaeus sends her to Atlantis to get weapons capable of hurting a demon and she astral travels back with said weapons sticking out of her. [note to Sara: find a better was to carry things during astral travel]
The small box just happened to contain a deck of tarot-like cards…. from Atlantis. Lucky that. Although they kind of disappear as a story point after one use - kind of like that samurai sword.
What sword? Oh yeah…
Sara’s been astral travelling on her own - or trying to - and last trip Mercault asked her to spy on his rival Annika Soo. Sara finds she’s sheltering the Sanctus injured in the sonic blast. But Soo can see her.
I steadied my gun on her. “You trafficking children too? Pinching artifacts not enough?”
She straightened. “You’re a fool. SANCTUS is broken, and I will help them mend. In so doing, I will consume them.”
“They’re on a mission from God, Annika. They’re not going to give that up. Not even for you.”

Points for the Blues Brothers quote.
When all of her gets back to Mercault’s hotel room, there’s a sword sticking out of her shoulder. [note to Sara: sell that for the orphans… wait… NO. Stop throwing money at the orphan rescue thing. It seems like you need a better strategy now you know more about what you’re up against. Father Jerome is a little too folksy for this.]
So it’s off to the demon realm she goes… it’s a trap *rolls eyes* of COURSE it’s a trap. And she comes back carrying not one or two but ALL six demons inside her. Ouch.
She’s so burned up from the inside, she’s barely holding together and Armaeus whisks her away.
“ Then heal me , dammit , ” I breathed .
“ You are too weak , ” he rumbled . “ Your body is barely a husk . The weight of six demons effectively incinerated you from the inside . The Atlantean blade served to protect you somewhat , but you will need time to return to normal . ”
“ Oh my God , Nikki . ”

“ God has very little to do with your condition , but your extreme condition is why I cannot kiss you , embrace you … or pound you into the back of the bed . Miss Wilde . ”

Gosh… even when he’s talking dirty he’s so polite. Unable to touch her, he fills her mind with what he wants to do to her. *fans self* and somehow it heals her.
Nikki, meanwhile, appeals to the demons size wise so they’ve kidnapped her. She’ll be fine, I swear. Nikki likes her guys big and muscular. She prefers the leader Warrick.
***
The series has more than a few characters by now; it runs at a pace that borders on chaos. This all happens over days. But shippers get their happy ending. Yay!
Sara is just lied to by Arcana; or they lie by omission. She’s very good at being pointed at something and just going for it; it’s her character but it’s flawed. She’s upgrading at a pace that is literally tearing her apart. It’s pretty obvious that she is not human and thus, they shouldn’t be able to argue the ‘human intervention’ loophole.
As per previous, the Devil tells her the truth but she doesn’t get the opportunity to ask him stuff and she doesn’t know what questions to ask him.
More than a few plot points click together. More info about her parentage is revealed.
But a few things are falling into the cracks. Father Jerome, the orphans, the money from her mother’s bank accounts, and the Deathwalkers do nothing but sit around (which seems to BE what they do).
There’s some heavy handed imagery - on Atlantis she swings a set of scales between opposing ranks of angels and demons. Is she Justice? If she’s on Arcana can she still be with the Magician? Justice is blind and Sara’s been taking some eye injuries, too.
There’s a lot of skipped scenes. I guess that’s okay - it’s been established that Sara is badass and skilled - so we left her in the German forest outside Neuschwanstein Castle chatting to Valkyries and being pursued by an army of defenders, a squad of assassins and some wolfhounds and the next scene she’s walking out of the Vegas airport. If that kind of scene skipping annoys you, there’ll be a lot of it here.
But the mother in me wants her to take a nap. And eat something for gawd’s sake… and did you use contraception, honey? You know he was still mortal when you did the deed.

I read this book as part of a boxed set that included it, the prequel novella and the first three books in the Immortal Vegas set. I'm reviewing what I remember of all four books together now.

First up, I love the concepts and worldbuilding Ms Stark has used for the Immortal Vegas set. The way magic works, the politics of the Connected community (and the dangers posed by the shadow Vatican group Sanctus all create a rich world in which the stories play out.

And yes, I freaking love the Tarot tie-in, to the point where I've started connecting with my own deck again.

I also like the main character, Sara/Sariah Wilde - sometimes in spite of herself. Occasionally, she annoys me, but on the whole I can resonate with and respect her. And there are some fairly awesome B characters that help to flesh out the story too - Nikki, Simon, and - to some extent - Death (the only Major Arcana archetype character who feels like an actual character to me - she makes me think of a grown up, tattoo artist version of Death of the Endless) I seriously want Nikki to have her own book.

BUT. I do have an issue with the books, which is the way that two of the main male characters and Major Arcana archetypes - the Magician and the Devil - are handled. Both of them use their (and Sara's) sexuality as a weapon to get what they want. The DubCon is strong - and regular - with both of them. And Sara, for the most part, seems to just take it onboard in a way that makes me wonder what Ms Stark wants us as readers to take from these scenes.

Plus - especially towards the end of Book 3, The Magician seems to get caught up in some serious Roarke syndrome and emotional constipation, which just didn't gel with his previously established character for me.

So, long story short... if you prefer your sexual tension fully and enthusiastically consensual and your relationships developing between partners who can communicate with each other like adults (and like equals), these may not be the books for you.

For me, the consent thing is... uncomfortable, but not at the level where it's a dealbreaker, especially given how much I love other elements of the world. I know of several people for who it WOULD be a dealbreaker though and your mileage may vary. So personally, I'd want to add a content warning caveat before I recommended the series to anyone.

But, that acknowledged, I *HAVE* enjoyed the Immortal Vegas series so far. It's been fun, silly, and taken me through twists and turns I wasn't expecting, all while having some great character moments that are the stuff I hang out with book characters to experience.

So yes, I'll be going on to read the next few in the series.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A colorful book full of twists!
We finally learn more about Sara's past (and well I fully understand why she left !!), the mythological side became richer (the mysterious Atlantis =D I think this is the first book I read with Atlantis without it being with conspiracy theories or other ... Here it works very well and I confess that I would have loved to explore even more the ruins of the city !!) aaaaand I am always frustrated by the romance >< PFIOU !!!
I received Born to Be Wilde as a free copy from the author. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I haven't read any other books in this series, but I don't feel at a disadvantage for having missed the prior novels. Sara was a good character with enough flaws to make her relateable, but not so many to make her appear weak as a heroine. The tarot made for an interesting twist, and I loved Sara's ability to use the cards to maneuver through her challenges. I enjoyed the plot, although there were a few threads that will hopefully finally be addressed in future episodes. A good read.
Sara Wilde is a psychic who hunts down magical treasures. Sara's powers also seem to be growing and someone is targeting her bringing up a past she would rather forget. Now she has to deal with saving Connected kids, stopping a power hungry emperor, maneuvering through the games of the arcane council and keeping herself alive through it all.
This is the first book in the series that I picked up and it was hard to follow at times. That being said it was also a pretty entertaining story. I may read more but not in a big hurry to do so.
SO MUCH FUN!!!
This one was definitely the best one yet - introducing to more facets of the Connected world and also, finaly Sara(Sariah) coming to grips with her past, in the craziest way imaginable. My only concern is that she doesn't turn into an Anita Blake type character who becomes more and more powerful and can do anything and everyone fancies her. Although there is already an element of the latter and I'm not sure if I'm down with random men kissing her against walls technically against her will....
*Read as part of the 1-3 boxset*
I was more into this than the previous ones, the series is now starting to progress at speed, with more players coming into the game in relation to the tarot cards and their representatives. Very interesting concept, although I admit I know nothing about it at all, so Sara's explanation when she reveals her picks are rather interesting.
The thing that started in book 1 with Sara and the Magician progressed quite a lot in this one, and I have to say I was excited for it happening.
Cannot wait to read book 4.
The Past Comes Forward Darkly
Sara is hunting for something for the Magician in Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, and finds she is being hunted as well, by a fellow antiquities supplier. The name he gives shakes her up, but not as much as what Detective Rooks tells her about herself. Viktor Dal appears to have been a suspect for 3 missing kids after Sara left Memphis ten years ago, but he disappeared. So why would he want Sara? And why now?
I really like Nikki; she's trans, but accepted for who she is by her friends, despite (because?) the fact that she's loud, eccentric, knows her own mind and is extremely outgoing. I like that she is as respected as everyone else. She's also extremely loyal and I think she's my favourite character.
New ideas & plots and characters. I've enjoyed the first 2 Immortal Las Vegas books, but this book is a fuller imagining of the stories. A true intertwining of magic & tarot & gods & humanity. Really enjoyed this one!
