My MIL gave me this book several years back soon after the book came out in 2014. I loved the colorful color (something you miss in the second edition). She wanted me to know about a restaurant they went to often when they lived in China where she taught at a university in Kumming multiple times over two decades. This book didn't give me much insight into that place because most of it is focused on Flahive's life which brought him to co-owning several Salvadori's Coffee House(s).

Perhaps it is the nature of adventuresome folks to go off on such business ventures, but the details of their lives – surviving injuries, meeting fierce wildlife, and dealing with characters around Asia – felt a bit too much to me. How much of it was real? On top of that so much time was spent on those lives that I didn't get a firm sense of the coffee house where my MIL spent "many happy hours."

If you are looking for a book about folks who take risk but don't discuss the negatives of living in China, this will be the one for you.
