Jean-Marie Cooper Cabidoulin ne sert a rien, loin de la; il est beaucoup plus que cela. There are no bad Jules Verne books, but some of them (in fact, at least for those of my age quite many) are memorable and others a little bit too dull or too sad for my taste as an average reader.
This is the case with The Serpent, as the atmosphere, a psychotic one, makes all the difference...

Hoewel het verhaal natuurlijk niet meer van deze tijd is (de walvisvangst), is het toch spannend. Het gaat over de reis van een walvisvaarder naar Noordelijke wateren, en over hoe de walvisvangst er aan toe gaat. Ondertussen worden ook veel aardrijkskundige en geschiedkundige weetjes verteld.
Om het nog spannender te maken, is er één van de bemanningsleden die er vast van overtuigd is dat er een verschrikkelijk zeemonster rondzwemt in de oceaan. En als dan op een bepaald moment het schip echt in moeilijkheden komt, weet hij een groot deel van de rest van de bemanning grotendeels te overtuigen van zijn theorie. Maar uiteindelijk loopt alles toch nog goed af.
Ouderwets maar spannend en interessant.

Anders dan de titel doet vermoeden beschrijft het grootste deel van het boek een zeer aangename zeereis. Nu ja, een avontuurlijke reis van een walvisjager, vandaag natuurlijk niet meer verantwoord voor de natuurvrienden. Destijds nochtans een gevaarlijk beroep voor geharde mannen die vaak jaren van huis waren - niet te vergelijken met de huidige Japanse walvisvaarders. Toen moest de mens vaak het onderspit delven in het gevecht van mens tegen walvis.
Stilaan bouwt Verne, die zijn boek zoals gewoonlijk doorspekt met allerlei wetenschappelijke gegevens over land, zee, fauna en flora, de spanning op. En hier komt een link met het fantasy genre als de oude kuiper het heeft over het zeemonster. Jules Verne spreekt zich uiteindelijk hier niet over uit, hij legt uit wat een natuurlijk fenomeen zou kunnen zijn, maar laat de deur op een kier voor wat anders.
Goed geschreven, grotendeels een aangenaam verhaal dat vlot leest en op het einde een spannende climax. Geen sci-fi maar toch een typische Verne.

Jedna z tych, ktore som musela citat v ramci jednej sutaze :-) ta druha najlepsia (posledna bola V krajine kozusin a ta ma velmi neoslovila). Paci sa mi styl i jazyk i ten narastajuci nepokoj v posadke... aj to, ze predsa len Verne ponechava citatelovi i posadke nadej. Je to pomerne utla knizka, rychlo sa cita, dufam, ze si najde cestu aj k dnesnym detom.
Je to o partii na velrybarskej lodi (vegetariani a vegani, necitajte to), ktora sa vydava na nebezpecny lov, o debnarovi, ktory stale rozprava o morskom hadovi, o vystrasenych rybaroch a velrybach, ktore miznu... ako to dopadne? Dostihne ich morska obluda? To sa clovek dozvie i nedozvie vo Verneho knizke.

The 49th Extraordinary Voyage takes us on a whaling campaign, both in the South Pacific near New Zealand and in the North Pacific near Alaska and Kamchatka. Previous novels in the series taking place at sea include "The Adventures of Captain Hatteras", "A Floating City", "The Survivors of the Chancellor", and "An Antarctic Mystery".

What is it about?: The Saint-Enoch was a French whaler ship commanded by Captain Bourcart, with a crew of around thirty people. The start of their campaign was delayed because they were missing a cooper and a ship doctor. A doctor was found, but for a cooper they had no other option than convincing old Jean-Marie Cabidoulin to come out of retirement. Captain Bourcart was reluctant because Cabidoulin, although a good professional, was pessimistic by nature, always foreseeing the worst and telling his shipmates the most terrible stories about the ocean and its monsters (the original title translates as "The Stories of Jean-Marie Cabidoulin"). At last, the ship was able to leave Le Havre bound for the Pacific Ocean. Their campaign was sometimes successful, sometimes dismal. More and more mysterious events occurred: Natural phenomena or the sea monster that Cabidoulin was always prophesizing?
This is a good example of minor Verne novel: not as thrilling as his best works, but nevertheless a pleasant read and not lacking in elements of interest.
In the beginning, when the cranky and eccentric Cabidoulin was introduced, I thought that this was going to be one of those Extraordinary Voyages with humorous elements, but that turned out not to be the case, since the emphasis was not on his idiosyncrasies.
The book is mostly the opportunity to follow a whaling campaign from the beginning to the end. Many modern readers may consider whaling as a cruel practice, but from the point of view of Verne's contemporaries it was just a tough and daring way to make a living, involving sea trips that lasted several years and dangerous combats between powerful cetaceans and small boats full of sailors and harpooners.
It is another rather short novel, and most of it is devoted to showing us the day to day life on board a whaling ship, how they went from on place to the other, always in search of whales, and often coming in contact with the same ships who are involved in their own campaigns, both colleagues and rivals.
Although it did not happen often, sometimes several whaling ships in the same area would compete for the same prey, and it could lead to a lot of tension and even violence.
This slice-of-life adventure element is spiced up with the rivalry between the French ship and an English whaler which refused to salute them (Verne shows his Anglophobic tendency by depicting them as conceited and rude), and which they will meet several times in the course of a couple of years.
Another plot thread is the increasing number of clues about the possible presence of a large sea creature. Verne plays a "will they, or won't they?" game (will they eventually meet the sea monster that Cabidoulin is always expecting, I mean). The signs are there, but they could perhaps be explained more easily as unusual but natural phenomena.
Although the subject of a whaling campaign is interesting, for most of the book the adventure is low-key, being an unexceptional trip, until the last part of the novel, when events speed up and there's a lot of danger. Like in "The Village in the Treetops", one could say the ending is... well, maybe not abrupt in this case, but at least faster than it might have been.
Enjoyment factor: Another short, fast read. I found it enjoyable, without being one of my favorite Vernes. These novels from the last few years of Verne's life have a reputation for being less eventful, but I am still finding them very readable and always with elements of interest, even if sometimes it takes them a while to get to the most thrilling parts.

Ich weiß jetzt mehr über den Walfang und die Schifffahrt als ich je wollte. Story war so gut wie nicht vorhanden und die Seeschlange weit und breit nicht zu sehen.

Este libro en si plantea una trama muy simple, lo rescatable son los paisajismos y el retrato de la pesca de ballenas. Sin mas 3 estrellas. 🫡

No es esta la edición que he leído, aunque dada la traducción que dice publicar, esta no es más que una copia de la original de Sánez de Jubera, que es la que yo he leído. Qué bien habría estado que alguien revise las traducciones primeras y corrija los seguros errores que contiene, pero es más barato así. En fin.
Obra bastante menor de Verne, en la que trata el tema de los monstruos marinos, de forma bastante pobre pero rigurosa. Cita algunos avistamientos que ahora sabemos son ciertos, y lo demás lo deja en un plan de que la existencia de estos monstruos podría ser remotamente posible.
Novela floja donde la haya, aunque entretenida y más o menos amena en la que también se describe la caza de ballenas y todas sus vicisitudes, sin hacer muchos juicios de valor sobre la idoneidad de ello, lo que resulta un poco extraño dada la afición ecologista de Verne. Eso sí, deja bastante claro que las ballenas terminarán por desaparecer si se sigue con su caza.

Una novela ambientada en el mar, en la época de la caza de ballenas. Es una adaptación juvenil ilustrada bastante agradable. El protagonista de las aventuras es el navío Saint-Enoch, un ballenero francés que surca los mares. Su tripulación extrae el aceite de las ballenas para su comercio, sus campañas duran alrededor de 3 o 4 años.
Durante la novela se detallan muy bien las diferentes clases de cetáceos y las formas de caza de la época. Imagino que la versión completa del libro se explaya en detalles al estilo de Julio Verne. La embarcación zarpa de Francia y toca tierra en Nueva Zelanda, Vancouver y en las Islas del Océano Glaciar Ártico. Juan María Cabidoulin es el personaje que da título a la novela, el viejo tonelero supersticioso que se empeña en ver malos augurios en todo y sobre todo le tiene miedo a la "gran serpiente marina".
Durante sus aventuras el Saint Enoche se cruza con el navío inglés Repton, con la tripulación de este ballenero se iniciar una competencia por la caza de ballenas. Entre estos ingleses y franceses descubrimos que son muchas las diferencias, pero más son las semejanzas entre los seres humanos. Los sucesos se precipitan cuando los cetáceos desaparecen de los mares, los lugares habituales están desiertos, se encuentran restos de ballenas y cachalotes mutilados con mordidas, los pobladores de aquellos helados remotos parajes creen que en monstruos prehistóricos. ¿Será la gran serpiente marina?
Me gustó mucho esta novela que empecé con muy poca expectativa. Verne es un escritor magistral por excelencia. Me dio ganas de leer más novelas sobre el mar o piratas en los próximos días.

Quizas de manera forzada pero puedo decir que es una mezcla entre Moby Dick y Las Brujas de Salem. Tratare de explicar. La novela de Melville seguramente Verne la conocia muy bien. La similitud esta en que trata sobre ballenas y al igual que aquella es muy educativa al respecto, nos habla de tipos de ballenas, el proceso y tecnicas de caza, los productos que se obtiene de ellas y cierta ambicion de cazar la mas grande posible. Toda la primer parte describe eso.
Y en cuanto a las Brujas de Salem, quizas Verne conocía el hecho, pero por un anacronismo no conocia la obra de Miller. Pero comparten la tematica de la alucinacion colectiva sobre algo que alguien cree que existe y es tan convincente que contagia a los demas.
La primer parte es un poco pesada, pero a aquellos que les gusten las novelas maritimas con cierto rigor cientifico les va a encantar.

Być może nie najlepszy początek przygód z Verne'em, bo o ile podoba mi się cały nastrój powieści, pozwalający wczuć się w to niezwykłe żeglarskie życie, to całość jest po prostu nudna. Doceniam również przekaz, że nie wszystko o czym słyszymy musi zawsze być prawdą, ale ostatecznie nie odnoszę wrażenia, bym wyniósł cokolwiek z tej książki. Nawet końcowe zbratanie się Francuzów i Anglików - choć wspaniałe - nie wystarczyło, żeby mnie bardziej zachwycić.

one of verne's less imaginative works, the premise was more interesting that moby dick, but the story lacked the grand vision of his other works. it pains me to say it, but this the first of his voyages extraordinaires that i did not like.
