Another winter has come to the small town of Turtlecreek and Sheriff Angus Lynch has been busy trying to help the members of his community cope with the bitter cold. As he is coming home from the logging camp one day, the sound of crying hovers in the wind and he soon finds a small child, abandoned to the elements.
Thrice-widowed Georgia Witte hasn’t been surprised by much in her life, but when the cankerous town sheriff arrives at her boarding house with a shivering little girl in his arms, she knows there are still things that surprise her. She is even more surprised by Angus’s gentle touch with the girl, since he always avoided small children like the plague.
Feeling the urge to keep the little girl he calls Mercy safe, Angus decides to stay at the boarding house with the wee one and the nosey widow. With each passing day, Mercy and Georgia seem to melt away the frozen exterior that Angus has presented to people for the past seventeen years. Angus begins to hope again for a future with a family, but his fear seems to paralyze him. Will he walk away? Or will he finally let go of the pain of his past and embrace a future with a woman and child he has begun to fall in love with?
