Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 170 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur's Brazilian Portuguese teaches the Sao Paulo dialect of Brazilian Portuguese
The Pimsleur® the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Brazilian Portuguese, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.
Reading Lessons begin in Unit 2 and provide you with an introduction to reading Brazilian Portuguese. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.
This is an excellent resource for learning to speak Brazilian Portuguese. I highly recommend the Pimsleur program for any language you want to learn (the same program format is available in many different languages).
The audio CDs feature native speakers, so as you listen and repeat, you are learning to speak with the authentic accent. It's broken down into 30 half hour lessons, with the recommendation that you do only one per day. Perfect for your daily commute to work.
For me, the best thing about the program is that it's not just a random hodge-podge of words and phrases to listen and repeat (like those old Berlitz cassettes I found at a garage sale), but instead takes basic conversational elements and builds on them in a practical, linear way, so that as you go along, you are able to have an actual conversation with someone in Portuguese. In fact, at the end of the very first lesson, you will be able to greet someone and have a very basic exchange.
The first few lessons focus on the kind of things you will need to know how to say if you visit Brazil as a tourist (greetings and introductions, how to ask directions, how to order at a bar or restaurant). By the last lesson, you will be able to go much deeper than this conversationally.
It comes with a small booklet of readings to supplement the audio-only lessons. I like this, because many of the words and phrases are spelled much differently than they sound phonetically.
