Fillmore Press was once Madder Red, a homicidal maniac and criminal overlord who terrorized the town of Bedlam for years. Then he got better. This is what happens next. A double-sized introduction to a blood-soaked cityscape of murder, mayhem, and mystery by NICK SPENCER (MORNING GLORIES, THIEF OF THIEVES) and RILEY ROSSMO (REBEL BLOOD, GREEN WAKE)!
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Nick Spencer is a comic book writer known for his creator-owned titles at Image Comics (Existence 2.0/3.0, Forgetless, Shuddertown, Morning Glories), his work at DC Comics (Action Comics, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents), and for his current work at Marvel Comics (Iron Man 2.0, Ultimate Comics: X-Men).
Interesting...joker level psycho crossed with the dude from Saw and a bunch of serial killer types....he gets reformed somehow and this is the result....Nick Spencer wrote lighter stuff than this but this is not light...starts with a bloodbath murder of hundreds of children and others...psychological level horror, the horror of an evil person who just loved to kill...tempted to check out more of this...
Okay had me interested even though lots of unnecessary talking kind was lost to me. The art is somewhat amateur an clustered in parts of the comic; maybe that's intentional? I admit the intro panels with the kid was the reason deciding to purchase issue one. I do admit I'm having doubts of anymore of this comic if I do more out of curiosity as was this one. Who knows maybe despite the lame art I might if the story is worth reading.
MADDER RED? Oh my God! Oh My God! Oh My God! Nick Spencer has created the antihero to end all antiheroes. Madder Red is like The Joker meets Hannibal Lector meets Psycho. Sharp, witty, whimsical and suave when he needs to be, you don't feel bad for rooting for him, well, okay, maybe only at that part when he slices the little girls throat. But other than that everything is Kosher. The artworks great, minimalist in a way, broad strokes and not too much layering, except maybe for the covers. I like the artwork coz anything more flamboyant would've taken attention away from what's at heart, and that's Madder Red. The writing, the dialogue is Stellar too. One thing though, that superhero that took Madder Red in, who the hell is he, and how come he's featured for three frames only and then it's a wrap. I mean, not that he's important to me, or anything, just thing he presents a continuity problem--how comes he's not there to help with the crime rates towards the end, or will we see him in the subsequent issues. Whatever the case, Bedlam is one fun thrill. I'm excited.
Absolutely excellent, chilling and mind-blowing. Madder Red is a serial killer. His words will make you cringe and make your jaw drop. Reminds me of the Joker, Jigsaw, V and a few serial killers all rolled into one.
You want a edge of your seat graphic novel, this one is well worth reading.
