Poppy Green can talk to animals! Unfortunately, they never talk back to her. So she started writing in order to imagine what they might say and do when humans aren’t watching. Poppy lives on the edge of the woods in Connecticut, where her backyard is often a playground for all kinds of wildlife: birds, rabbits, squirrels, voles, skunks, deer, and the occasional wild turkey.

This was so cozy!! This is about a snow day for Sophie, Hattie and Owen. They are playing and doing all the snow day things when they run in to a hedgehog who is not only nocturnal, but hibernates. They play with her then help her fall asleep. The winter vibes are strong and I loved learning a little more about hedgehogs. Cute!

Read aloud to Gwen and Alec. This one was just so sweet - imagining a snow day for little woodland animals was really clever. We also loved that there was a homeschooling family introduced! This series continues to be really delightful.

Sophie Mouse’s winter time story was a perfectly delightful read on a cold winter’s day. I look forward to reading more books by Poppy Green!

If you don't care about parental presence, these books are good for emerging chapter book readers. I'm reading them aloud to my kindergarten kids, and will not keep them afterwards. What I like: technically chapter books but with LOTS of illustrations, large print, and simple words to make the transition from picture books a successful one. The illustrations (black and white sketches, other than the covers), are very cute, with adorable little animal friends. Lessons of friendship and inclusion. This one has lots of ideas for a fun winter day outdoors. What I don't like: I've had numerous issues with earlier books in this series. While not as serious, this book does have a very Disney Channel-esque treatment of parents. They are mentioned, but not really present as part of the story. The main character left first thing in the morning for a snow day with friends and didn't come home until dinnertime, but they are elementary school-aged. That sort of lack of oversight isn't the best example for kids, so I would urge caution and discussion with kiddos, along with balance from books with a healthy parental presence.

One morning when Sophie wakes up... her excitement brings her to the window. Snow! A snow day for Silverlake Elementary, is there anything better than that? Nope!

Sophie and her forest friends will have many delightful moments in their "glistening winter wonderland." Why not build a snow wall for a snow fight? Or maybe learning to skate backwards on the pond for the first time is a grand act of balance. Going sledding can lead to new friends, especially if they are ones who hibernate. There's always room for a mystery... especially when it's locating something special that is lost during all of the fun.

Sometimes you discover a delightful story, one in which the illustrations are too adorable not to browse. This is a fun-filled childhood story line with an adorably "spunky" main character. This is a series that brings to life characters that will not be forgotten.

I was trying not to be bothered that Sophie Mouse’s two winter play companions are a frog and a snake, cold blooded animals not active outdoors in winter, when a main plot point became showing a hibernating nocturnal hedgehog what it is like out during the day in winter. At that point I was confused and annoyed about why some characters abided by their natural traits and some did not. Otherwise it is an ok book my son really liked.

This one is my 3 year old's favorite so far and my second favorite after The Maple Festival! We both loved the fun snow day that Sophie and her friends had in this book. And my daughter especially loves hedgehogs so Pippa was a fun new character. We are really loving this series. We are flying through two books per day since we started reading them. My daughter just keeps asking to read more and more!

I think this was a very cute book about winter, a little informative about hibernation, and sweet that animals which would never get along in the wild could play together in the snow. This was a solo read because when I tried to read to Lili last weekend, she wasn't having it. This one would be a good read for Lili's 2nd grade sister. Not too challenging from a lexile perspective, yet longer to provide a sustained reading session.

Sophie Mouse and her friends are enjoying a snow day when they accidentally awaken Pippa the hedgehog is hibernating. Since Pippa doesn't know what snow is, Sophie takes her to do several winter activities. They play and then help Pippa back to sleep. This is a super cute beginner chapter book with adorable illustrations. Young girls will enjoy "The Adventures of Sophie Mouse" series.

12/5/20 - Really cute animal friends wake up someone they have never met while playing in the snow. Illustrations and story is just adorable. Super excited for when my granddaughter can read this on her own, but that will be quite a little while yet. But this is just perfect for those 1st grade -3rd grade transition books.

I really love the emphasis the Sophie Mouse series has on relationships, specifically family. Each book has focused on a various friend or family member. This time it gave a sweet look at the father with Sophie where previous books were the mother or brother. Included in this story is a positive nod to homeschooling, team work, observation, and friendliness.

Sophie Mouse and her friends have a snow day, and they meet a little hedgehog who should be hibernating but wants to play instead. These books have kind of boring plots, but my daughter likes them. Or maybe it's her stuffed unicorn who she pretends is her younger sister who likes them. Little girls with big imaginations will like this series.

It was good because Sophie mouse helped the hedgehog who was named Pippa go to sleep. She hibernates. Mostly hedgehogs do. Everybody helped Sophie mouse find her purple scarf. She left it on a shoe mouse they had made.

This charming, gentle book, showing friends acting kindly toward each other, probably would have received a 4 star rating except that three of the characters should have been hibernating rather than just one. That fact kept distracting me.

I'm reading this series with my 5 year old daughter -- we love these books! Sweet, engaging, fun. I like that Sophie is an artist and paints her experiences. We read this one during our own snow day, I loved it.

A delightfully cozy story about the wonder of a snow day as seen through Sophie, Hattie, and Owen’s eyes. The trio discovers the value of making a new friend, sharing all their favorite winter activities, and working together to help each other. Such a wonderful series!
