Una deuda pendiente (eLit)

Rate this book

Dustin Ramsey and Erica Mann shared one disappointing encounter in high school. Ten years later, Dustin is on the verge of taking over the family business and is determined to compensate for his shortcomings. Erica has put that disastrous night behind her and isn't interested in a repeat no matter how seductive Dustin might be…

Dustin and Erica have scorching chemistry and their second chances romance is seriously steamy. While Dustin and Erica are likable characters, there isn't much else going on besides the sex scenes. That said, Thompson's writing style is engaging and the book is a quick and entertaining read.

This book started off in promising fashion, but I eventually got frustrated and gave up.

The story is a second chance tale of sorts. Dustin Ramsay has always been a bit of a party guy and since his father was an oil baron, he seemed to have money to burn. However, now that Dustin has had to take over the family business (oil and newspapers), he's learning they're on shaky ground. He has an idea to revitalize the company by convincing the owner of a hit newsletter to franchise and expand into other cities.

And who owns this fun, sexy newsletter? None other than Erica Mann, his old high school crush. The two haven't really spoken since they had some fumbling, very bad sex in the back of a car way back when. When Dustin drops back into Erica's life, it's a bit of a meet awkward, though the banter between these two quickly heats up.

We soon see that these two are opposites in many ways. Dustin grew up rich and perhaps a bit spoiled, and has spent years racing cars. Erica, on the other hand, longs to be a serious journalist and is very concerned for the environment. In fact, as we read about Erica's environmental stands, it's hard to remember this book was written in 2002. What may have sounded a bit weird and quirky back then sounds downright prescient to a reader in 2023!

The chemistry between these two is fun and sexy, and I found myself starting to really enjoy the book. I still read a lot of category romance, but it seems like many of the category lines have drifted more into billionaires and less into the quirky, fun and sexy. However, just as I was finding this to be a fun throwback to some of what I used to love about category books, I got to a scene midway through that just didn't work for me.

In that scene, Erica was answering a reader question about sex toys in the bedroom. I think we all know some folks like that and some aren't into it. However, as Erica and Dustin debated the point, it turned into shaming someone about it. So, after that point, I decided to move on.

Truly, Madly, Deeply is a title that describes this book perfectly. This book is great. I like that the characters have history and that they re-enter each other's lives as adults. Erica has never really stopped thinking about Dustin and their bad experience when they were younger, and neither has he. He wants a chance to prove to her that he can be good in bed. The characters have so much chemistry and has some humorous moments that made me laugh. This was a book that I couldn't put down until I read it all!! Dustin came to find her to ask her to be apart of his family business with her advice column. If you haven't read you should! If you have, what did you think about it???

This is my second read from Thompson now, and I do believe she has a thing for the back seat boogie. Truly, Madly, Deeply has Dustin Ramsey, recent heir to Ramsey Enterprises, tracking down his high school sweetheart whom he hasn't seen in 10 years. He and Erica had had a fling in the back seat of his Mustang in high school, and it had been humiliating for both of them. Determined to correct this and to bring Erica into his new business ventures, Dustin tracks down Erica, now a successful sex-advice columnist in Dallas.

A decent story by VLT, but nothing that will wow you. I liked Dustin. Erica was ok, a little too full of herself and very judgemental IMO. Their conflict seemed very forced. And my big puzzle: his family owns two weekly newspapers and she wants to do some hard nose journalism.... how about doing that with your paper part time? Overall, an ok story.

I have enjoyed most of this author's books, but this one was a bit uninspiring-hohum. Nothing to exciting. But if a reader enjoys teenage romancers getting a second chance, then this could be an interesting read. Just wasn't for me.
