Ike Caudine never meant to become a criminal ...but he sure likes it.
After his Mary leaves him, Ike is desperate for an idea, a plan to impress her and win her back. He turns to his childhood friend, Fritz Moeller, and soon finds himself drawn into a violent world of drug dealers and at the center of the money laundering empire that his friend has created.
Once he dominates this new, thrilling world can he ever go back?
Full of dark humor and unforgettable characters, Monkey Man takes the reader on a wild ride through an underworld that lies beneath the affluent surface of a place called Greenwich, Connecticut.
Dave Moore is a financial crime fiction novelist. He brings 15 years of working in retail banking in one of the most affluent communities in the world (Greenwich CT) to his craft.
"On the surface banking is boring," he said, "but where there is money, there is funny stuff happening." Moore has become an expert at the funny stuff: frauds, scams, and white-collar crime. His books delve into this grey world.
Prior to banking, Moore worked as a salesman and lived quite the colorful life. Many characters and situations are based on real people and events, but he refuses to state which ones those are. He does state, however, that the first scene in his debut novel, Monkey Man, pretty much happened exactly as he described it in the book.
"I was on a sales call, and the guy I was pitching just sat and stared at this box of donuts the whole time. It was like he was hypnotized," Moore said.
Almost gave up about halfway through, but managed to finish it with the unfulfilled wish that it would improve. Vapid story, with mostly underdeveloped characters, except for Ike. Unable to connect with the characters or their inane situations, I did not care what happened nor did I find very much to be funny nor did I learn anything interesting about financial manipulation/money laundering (Moore's professional background.) Even the excess amount of gratuitous sex could not save this one. Skip it.
This is an interesting book. It's the story of this guy named Ike and his screwed up friends and how Ike starts as this salesman who hates his job and becomes a criminal. I wouldn't want any of these people in my house because they are rough and violent, but they are very interesting. The characters are all wild but realistic and I was sad that the book had to end. This novel has lots of swearing and crazy situations.
I won this book in a GoodReads Giveaway from David last month (Feb 2017). When I received it I was surprised to find a handwritten -Warning- on the cover page about editorial errors. Well, I saw some errors, mostly spelling, but I will say they did not detract from the story or my ability to enjoy reading it, at all.
The book has some bad language, sex, criminals, violence. What's not to like? The characters are quite interesting really, and Ike's love of Mary and dreaming of getting her back is very well done and real. I read a lot, and don't get surprised by many plots, but I must say there were some turns here I did not see coming. I thoroughly enjoyed "Monkey Man" and hope to see more in the future from David Scott Moore.
