The Atlantic Ocean meets Europe at the west coast of Ireland. Ireland was also a target for foreign powers to attempt to undermine the British Empire. Centuries of religious and economic slights had ensured the population was ripe for revolution, which the French intended to take advantage of. The officers and men of the King’s navy had to obey their duty to maintain the security of the kingdom but there were other considerations that created a conflict of interest. The resolution of the dilemma required integrity and flexibility, which are often incompatible, but can newly promoted Lieutenant Matthew Thompson bridge the conflicting demands of duty and honour?
