I probably would have liked it more if I hadn't recently seen that 'viral video' about the little blond girl who chose a brown-skinned doll in a doctor outfit, and had to explain to the cashier at Target that the doll *is* just like her, because "she's pretty, like me, and smart, like me, and I want to be a doctor too."

Simple story of a cat who goes to a store, with his birthday money and chooses a stuffed cat "just like Jasper." 1/25/12

Used again, the toddlers seemed quite taken with it. 1/16/13

Used this for my Toy Story Time - I had some younger children who had problems sitting through Beady Bear, so I chose this as a simpler middle story. 1/14/14

Used as a second story for second Baby/Toddler since Red Sled had not gone over that well for the first one.

Short. Simple. Birthday.

Story: Jasper the cat goes to the toy store to buy something with his birthday money. He tries lots of toys before he chooses the perfect one.

Language: Full page illustrations with one line of text makes this an easy read. Inkpens illustrations are always great and the simplicity of the story will make it one to read over and over.

Characters: Only Jasper, a loveable happy young cat!

Good short storytime book about birthdays, toys and cats.

'Just Like Jasper!' is a short and simplistic story, from the creators of 'Kipper', about a young black and white cat named Jasper. Jasper ventures to the toy shop with his pocket money in the hope of finding an exciting new toy. He plays with many of the toys in the shop to help him decide which one to buy, however, Jasper eventually chooses a small cuddly toy cat that looks just like him.

The large text and illustrations make this book ideal for new readers and would be particularly suitable for guided reading for children in Foundation stage aged 4-5. It could also be suitable as a brief story to read a Foundation Stage class.

This book would also be particularly useful to read as a class in a Special Educational Needs setting, perhaps for the first half-term in an Early Years class. The variety of items Jasper encounters in the toy shop gives plenty of scope for the use of props and/or picture cards to hold attention and there are some opportunities for sensory engagement such as when Jasper plays with the bubbles and the wind-up mouse. The book also provides a brilliant opportunity to use basic Makaton as an accompaniment as Jasper picks up many toys including a ball and a doll.

I would definitely recommend this book for children in the Foundation Stage or in SEN Early Years, however, due to the simplicity of the book, older readers are likely to lose interest.
