This fourth book in the Harry Tate series was better than the last two--tighter action and a more compelling plot. I enjoyed it.

Ok. Perhaps I’m over the genre. I should try something different.

One of my go to authors always guaranteed a well written plot driven story that rattles along with action and page-turning thrills. Excellent for holidays, long journeys or a time of leisure that allows the book to be consumed in one sitting. This book is the fourth in the series of Harry Tate ex MI5; here he is tasked by the UN to uncover a potential terrorist plot.
As with similar type books the reader is transported quickly between locations with often increasing tension. It is a terrific read that allows you to escape into this sinister world of covert operations, spies and contract killing. With some distance you may wish to unpick plot twists and how the balance of power changes from all succeeding terrorist to errors that allow the net to close.
However this misses the point; this book as with others is well researched and the story rings true. No-one screams to the bad guy as they read Ian Fleming just kill Bond and get your henchmen/women to dispose of the dead body.
So don't judge this novel unfairly either. This story is a clever twist on catching the killer before he knocks everyone off; it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a well written thriller and for me this author is a growing force in this area. This is a book to sweep you away briefly into a world where death stalks the characters in these pages and you feel that tension and threat as though you're there.
As with any Magson you will not be disappointed, Retribution is a book that is easy to recommend and even easier to read and enjoy. Happily Harry Tate is due to return later in the year and I cannot wait for the next adventure.

The title refers to a plan to exact vengeance for an act which opens the novel, in Kosovo in 1999. The plot deals with an extended cat-and-mouse game, with p.o.v. alternating between the two. On the one side is a man calling himself, among other names, Kassim, trained in Chechnya and the desert camps by specialist ‘tutors.’

On the other side is Harry Tate, ex-soldier, ex-MI5, now a civilian working for a security company as the novel opens, when he is contacted by a man who had been the UN’s local field security representative when Harry had been part of the NATO-led multi-national peacekeeping force, heading a close protection (read “bodyguard”) assignment for a UN VIP. The time and place? Kosovo, 1999. It appears that just before Harry’s team left the area, a 14-year-old Muslim girl was raped and murdered inside their compound. And now an assassin is tracking down all those who were present and one by one killing them. Harry is tasked with finding the rest of the men before any more lives are lost - - his own included.

The action-packed novel moves from the desert to London, Paris, New York City, Brussels and Moscow, among other places, in a suspenseful and intense journey. The author has done a terrific job creating a totally believable world and an equally credible protagonist. It is even possible, shockingly, to find the antagonist sympathetic. Tate is not one given to drama, relying instead on thorough investigation and instinct. This was my first introduction to this author, and to Harry Tate, and I can’t wait to read the next in the series. Highly recommended.

I love a good action thriller and this novel doesn't disappoint.

Harry Tate, an ex-M15 hunter now working in the private sector, doesn't hang around. He's a dynamic character, utterly focused on getting the job done, and with a strong moral compass. Hired to stop a potential terrorist plot and find the lone assassin picking off all those present at a UN compound on a specific night in 1999, Harry's moral code is challenged when he discovers the horror of the crime the assassin is avenging. Pragmatic and logical, but prepared to do what's necessary for justice, Harry is faced with a difficult dilemma.

What I especially like about this story is that Magson creates an utterly ruthless assassin, known as Kassim, yet although he commits a series of murders across the timeline of the novel, as a reader I found him both chilling and empathetic. That said, whilst Kassim certainly racks up the highest body count, the true title of 'villain' for this story really rests with another character (which I won't name or it will spoil the story for you).

From London, across Europe and over to the States, Harry follows the clues, and the bodies. With the tension tightening notch by notch through each chapter, by the time you're heading for the end the pace is breathlessly rapid and, as a reader, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

A joy to read.

This series gets better with each book. Once again Harry is drawn into a situation out of his control and always a step behind the villainous Kassim. This started in 1999 and moves forward to present day when a UN team are being killed for a rape of a teenage girl in 1999. Harry has to stop the terrorist and solve whodunit. I now look forward to the next one.

This book was the least compelling in this series. It was much too predictable. I was less caught up in the action as I was in the previous books I've read by this author.

Can't Put It Down

The story plot was developed as the tale was unfolding. Riveting ...and the characters were satisfactorily developed. A very good read.
