This reader is excellent. I love teaching the SCW to my upper-level honors students. Learning about the fascist 30's regime(s) in Europe is always interesting to discuss when connecting to human rights. This reader does a great job at bringing vocabulary, grammatical concepts, and historical aspects into perspective at a high school student level. I recommend this reader to anyone looking to teach human rights and the SCW.

It is now December and my Spanish 4 students are reading this book in my class. This is my first time using novels to teach Spanish. So far this is one of my favorites of the 3 books I've used at various levels I teach. I think my students are enjoying it. It is hard to find good Spanish novels for those learning Spanish! This one is at or just slightly above most of my student's ability and is actually interesting! Authors: Please write more books similar to this one! Ones that are more enjoyable and entertaining.

I will update after my students finish and include their reaction to the novel.

Plot: During the Spanish Civil War, a teenage girl has to keep a family secret in order to protect her family from Fascists seeking revenge on her father. The story lends itself well to teaching about Spanish history, vocabulary, family relations and a bit of culture. Some vocabulary words are recycled and I like that. It uses cognates but also requires students to learn new words. I also like this. Books that are too heavy on cognates are less interesting to me.

******slight spoiler

There is a a love interest and I will let you read to see how that ends up. My students are already guessing about the ending. One student guessed the romance will end well while others think the love interest is a liar and a user. Read to find out :)

This is written in level three Spanish.

The historical background setting is interesting: the Spanish Civil War.

The plot revolves around the relationship between a young woman from a Spanish Republican family and a young soldier from Franco's army.

There is an very helpful glossary.

Read to prep for a class. This is probably the best "reader" I have in my class library as far as interesting story. Now I'm inspired to do a unit on this whole time period of Spanish history.

Lei este libro para una clase. Era un cuento interesante. Podimos practicar el subjuntivo y, al mismo tiempo aprender unas cosas acerca la guerra civil en Espana. Bien escrito.
