Are we finally done with SERVEYOU inc? I hope so, of course I thought the last volume was the last of it.

This was a pretty average volume with a few standout moments. The Doctor and crew end up in the Roman Empire and take on a very interesting subject, the conversion of Rome from being polytheistic to Christian. This was a very unique bit of DW explaining a historical event that I found to be well executed and clever.

Second...Cybermen.

Thirdly, the plot had real weight and consequences. Often the plots of these comics feel less, like they have to save the best for the show, and they can't add anything to the DW universe that would change the lore or history of the Doctor. However, in this volume they really attempted to give the reader an epic story arc finale.

Lastly, and most importantly...

That's right an appearance from The Goblin King the gremlin king. Ever since I realized Jones is a David Bowie stand-in, I've been waiting to see him dressed as his character from my favorite movie of all time Labyrinth.

It was everything I could hope for and I very much enjoyed seeing various lines from my beloved movie in the Doctor Who world.

Hello, My name is Rick and I am a Whovian.

Adiction, admitting it is the first step, right? ;)

So this is the 3rd volume of the new adventures of the Eleventh Doctor (although I'm not sure if these numbers really mean anything anymore, thanks Moffett) and it builds directly off the events of the previous volume. It's good, it's fun, it's The Doctor (bow tie included). I do not know if it's because there are 4 separate Doctor Who title running concurrently or if it's just that the stories seem rushed and under-developed, but I'm just having trouble enjoying these new Titan comics. Don't get me wrong, they are enjoyable - just not quite as good as I think they could be. It might also be that I got really burned out with Matt Smith's particular zany antics and maybe these comics are still to soon for me to really enjoy.

This time around the Doctor's TARDIS Crew wrap up all the loose threads, dangling plot lines and character arcs left over from the previous ten issues and set things up for a new status quo for the Eleventh Doctor.

3.5, but we're rounding up.

The Doctor, Alice, ARC, and Jones face off with the Talent Scout one final time, with the fate of the TARDIS on the line. Plus, Cybermen, and...the Doctor's mother?

The opening story here featuring the Cybermen could have been executed without the Cybermen entirely. They literally add nothing to the plot that couldn't have been written around without them, and considering this is the first classic Who monster to appear in the Titan comics outside of the Autons in the Ninth Doctor's series, I was a little disappointing.

The final two issues of the volume really elevate everything though. It's a wonderful conclusion to everything that the Eleventh Doctor's been through in these past 15 issues, and brings the Talent Scout arc to a close. It even made me given a toss about Jones, who I'd been sour on since he appeared, plus it has an optimistic ending thanks to the ever-brilliant Alice.

The art's the art at this point - Simon Fraser's rubbery faces and Warren Pleece's ye olde Vertigo stylings keep things ticking over, and I don't think either of them are going anywhere as we head into Year Two.

Year One of the Eleventh Doctor's adventures has been a bit uneven. Al Ewing and Rob Williams' story has had a strong throughline, but it's often so good that the one-and-done stories set around it don't hold as much weight. These final adventures have the same issue, with the Cybermen adding nothing while the entity/Talent Scout stuff soars high above it. We'll see if they can iron out the kinks for the next year.

The finale of Season 1 of Titan's 11th Doctor. It's a bit weaker than its predecessors, in large part because it has to close the story of ARC and the Entity, and that was always a kind of weirdly abstract plot, so the finale is kind of weirdly abstract too. Which is a darned pity, because it brings down a Cyberman story.

Still, there's lots to like in this volume. The crew members are still fun. There's quite a lot of great writing. And the lead story, "Four Dimensions" is superb for its unusual storytelling and its great blending of the story with art. And, of course we get the finish of this initial story.

Hmmm.

Art throughout this volume is incredible. In terms of story, this may be better than volume 2 but not as good as volume 1. I've read the first two stories in this before, but the last two, which are two parts each, were new to me. The first story, "Give Free or Die," is from a Free Comic Book Day issue and feels meta but fun. "Four Dimension" really plays around with colors and includes an homage to David Bowie's Labyrinth character. "Conversion" contains a conclusion that reminds me very much about something to do with Kosh in Babylon 5, which is funny because how ARC looks reminds me of Kosh.

In "The Comfort of the Good," we see how the TARDIS reacts to The Doctor's questionable choices and how low he gets. There's a moment when it seems like The Doctor's mother comes into play, but it turns out to be the Talent Scout from Surveyou Inc. Doctor Who comics NEED to STOP doing this sort of thing. This is like when an issue from the IDW comic story "The Forgotten" ended with a possible tease for The Valeyard, which turned out not to be true. Or Titan's Tenth Doctor series in which an issue ends with The Doctor taking on the appearance of the Ninth and seeming like he'd be in the story longer, only to have his face back to normal within a few panels of the next issue. The comic book writers need to look at Paul Cornell's Third Doctor comic miniseries had an issue end with a surprise appearance, and then later revealed that character to not be what he seemed but turn out to be an even better surprise. These other writers have gone in the opposite direction with these kinds of gimmicks.

Anyway, all that aside, this was a pretty good conclusion for the companions' character arcs. ARC became one with the entity and said some heartfelt goodbyes. Jones got to travel through time and space and become a legendary prog rock musician. And Alice was able to see her mother watch Jones' concert. Alice remains with The Doctor, and I'm guessing there's a one companion per Doctor limit for the Four Doctors crossover. But I'm really gonna miss Jones and ARC. They brought a different kind of diversity we're not used to seeing in modern Doctor Who: a man from a different time period, and a being who doesn't look human at all. And they were fun to follow. If anyone else joins The Doctor and Alice's TARDIS crew, they have big shoes to fill.

Year 1, Book 3.
The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companions Alice, Jones and ARC have to confront the Talent Scout, the Entity and their past mistakes.

Okay, first off, you need to know that this is not a stand-alone Who story.
I usually don't mind picking up ongoing stories in the middle (I've been reading comics since I was a child, after all) but in this case, the entire book is dedicated to exploring plot points from previous books, with no real pause for explanation. So, therefore, I'm not sure if its failure to get me invested in any way, shape or form was because I didn't know the backstory or because it's very poorly written. I suspect the truth is 'both'.

The character work here is also terrible.
The Eleventh Doctor is totally out of character (as is the TARDIS), Alice may as well not be there for all the impact she has on the story, ARC is an intriguing idea that goes woefully underdeveloped and, worst in my mind, the character of Jones is a weird David Bowie pastiche (Bowie's original surname was Jones, if you didn't know).
Why is there are Bowie-alike in this book, who keeps spouting dialogue lifted from Bowie's songs? I certainly never found out. Did the writers think it was funny? (It isn't). Or clever? (It isn't). Was it meant to be an insult to the memory of an icon? (It is).

This book is so caught up with its poor characters and even poorer plot that it totally fails to make an interesting or significant element of the bit where an army of Cybermen confront the army of Constantine the Great. That could've been an entire book in and of itself, but here is little more than an aside before we're back on the Entity BS again.

On top of all of that, the artwork here is horrible. It's like someone sketched out some storyboards and then, instead of turning those into proper comics panels, they just decided "Good enough" and went to print. I've been reading comics for decades and this is some of the least professional-looking art I've ever seen.

Tracking the Entity's signal from the Berlin Wall in 1976 to Rome, 31 AD, the Doctor, Alice, Jones and ARC stumble into an ancient mystery that will forever change the course of human history! And the burden and dangers of a life aboard the TARDIS start to hit home for Jones — is this his farewell tour?” ***

The Emperor MAXENTIUS currently believes himself to be the sole emperor of Rome.
"Forward, commilitones!" [Roman term for 'my fellow soldiers'] – Maxentius

I'm old enough to do that.

A satisfying end to Year One of the Eleventh Doctor in Titan Comics. Ewing and Williams round off the run artfully with a satisfying conclusion to the ServeYou plot arc.

Since the events of the previous volume, the Doctor has a lot of making up to do and promises to finally make good on. He does this though his recent wicked turn makes him seem untrustworthy to that which he seeks to help and even the TARDIS herself.

Two out of three companions leave the adventure after proving themselves immeasurably. Still it was sad to see them go as they are some of the more remarkable characters to travel with the Doctor that I have ever come across. Still everything and everyone has it's time.

I really enjoyed all that Ewing and Williams did with the Eleventh Doctor and hope they keep returning to the series. The same goes for Pleece and Cook whose illustrations were especially rich and detailed in this volume. I now intend to see what Year Two has to offer.

I recommend Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Volume 3 - Conversion to those who have read the previous two volumes and want to see this thrilling arc through to a grand conclusion.

This final volume of the first "series" of the Doctor Who Eleventh Doctor comics tries to bring to a close the whole meta-plot about the Entity, its connection to ARC, and all that fun stuff.

The book had a bigger focus on the consequence of the Doctor becoming the CEO temporarily but also some of his decisions in this larger adventure that were somewhat questionable. And it reached a point with the TARDIS being particularly willful in this series, culminating with the TARDIS steering our adventurers more than normal AND even getting into a sort of fight with the Doctor.

But I really appreciated the rather introspective nature to things and how it ultimately comes together. It is a little disturbing when the Doctor's darker side comes out and this book has been doing a great job of processing that with the Doctor (and the readers) and figuring out a path forward. Living for a long as the Doctor has means a lot of mistakes and regrets in their life and it's never easy to deal with any of that sort of trauma.

Review for volumes two and three, as I really wish they had been combined rather than the excess time being wasted on having to hear more about Serveyouinc. It’s not really that new of a concept and I can’t see how the company that gives you everything you want translates into a slave company/world of workers. Not that I disliked our spare Companions but their story lines also seemed to go on for far too long.

The FCBD title was fun. Let’s hope that the Doctor’s future adventures don’t involve the same villains.

This is exactly what I was missing from the 12th Doctor's run. I'd much rather have these larger stories with original companions than trying to squeeze everything between episodes and have it all try and make some kind of sense. The ServeYou story comes to an end as the Talent Scout returns one last time to try and take over Rome as it converts to Christianity. Meanwhile the Doctor is having an existential crisis with the Tardis after the events of volume two. Good storytelling from Al Ewing and Rob Williams.

A great ending

Both Ewing and Williams saved the best for last, and conclude their run in the most satisfying manner. This one is a classic and a must-read for any whovian.

That said, Titan Comics made this edition one of the laziest trade paperbacks ever. While the previous volumes had at least somewhat well-designed chapter breaks and rearranged their content for a new format, this one just staples a bunch of issues together with zero editing. Like, seriously? Come on, I've seen fan-made omnibuses with better design.

I think this might be the final volume of this run of Doctor Who, and it's too bad. The Doctor seems more like a cheekier Constantine (DC) than he does a witty hero. That is intentional, I believe, and I respect the risk taken in casting such a shadow on this beloved character. The writing suffers whenever it's Rob Williams penning it rather than Ewing.

I quite liked it. The presence of David Bowie as a companion is a little jarring especially the little changes made for legal reasons to make him not David Bowie while clearly being a simplified stereotyped David Bowie. Good fun, though

“Is it bigger on the inside, Jones.” “We all are, Doctor.” ABSOLUTELY the best volume so far. I loved the mirroring of the Doctor’s relationship with the TARDIS to Alice’s relationship with her mother. A very satisfying conclusion to the first year of this comic.
