All of the foods in Mr. Adolph's deli join in the chase when Mrs. Elmira Deed's pickle escapes from the jar, in a zany, action-packed tale enhanced with artwork from the illustrator of You Can't Catch Me.
I don't know where we picked this up but it was a few years ago. After many reads, it got lost on the shelves. I was glad to find it today to read aloud to my daughter. It's a takeoff from the Gingerbread Man except the pickle is smarter than the cookie. Another difference is that the situation is somewhat cannibalistic because the pickle is chased by other food, a long list of zealous foods, who want the pickle's demise for whatever reason.
If that sounds dark, it isn't, unless you dwell on it. I did. My daughter, not so much. (Unless I hear otherwise in twenty years, I'll let you know.)
The language is not sublime and neither is the story, perhaps, but the book and story is nevertheless quirky enough to please.
I originally chose to read this book to my kindergarten class because the front cover illustration was so funny to me! It still makes me laugh to this day! This book is so silly and the kids just love hearing it read to them. The book kind of teaches about not bullying in a comedic way. This book can be read anytime!
One of my kids' favorites - we just happen to pick it up at the library one day and have gotten it several times since. A bit like "the gingerbread man" where several other foods chase the pickle who is avoiding being eaten. Great, funny pictures and some repitition. Is he stopped? Get it and find out!
This year for my birthday, I asked friends and family for their favorite book. It could be anything: chapter, non-fiction, memoir, picture, handbook.
This was my friends' pick.
Somehow, this book ended up as an extra because of a dumb inside joke about too many pickles. But as I read through it, I was both floored and excited. I loved turning the page to see more and more food chasing the poor pickle. I especially loved the ending! I thought it was a better ending than some of the repetition books I've seen (Gingerbread Man, etc.). Very cute, although it ended abruptly!
This book is about a pickle who escapes from a pickle jar and runs away to avoid being eaten. It is an unrealistic though entertaining story. He might be a bad pickle, based on his facial expressions, but in the end I found myself rooting for him. One might learn from it that there can sometimes be a way to get out of a bad situation or to get what you want in the end if you keep trying. A teacher could use it for an entertaining read in their classroom. You can also have the kids say with you "stop that pickle!"
This is a delightful children's book with a quirky storyline that will keep young readers entertained. The story describes a mischievous pickle that keeps escaping from its jar and causing chaos in the kitchen. The colorful illustrations perfectly capture the humor and playfulness of the story. Overall, this book is a fun and engaging that will ensure the students have a great time while reading the silly story with colorful characters!
I don't generally add or rate picture books I read on here, but after the reviews I read, I felt compelled. I honestly don't get the hype. The illustrations are kind of creepy. Food is chasing food so people can eat said food. And the ending was an awkward twist. I mean, I guess it's not a terrible story, but I would not pick it for storytime...
We saw this on Read Between the Lions today. I like pickles, but didn't really love this story. The illustrations weren't really in a style I like. In general, I didn't really like the idea of food running away so that its not eaten, but as more foods were added to the story, I warmed up to it. I didn't love the ending either, since everyone gets eaten for the most part. Its just a little creepy to me. It gets silly points for silliness though!
Stop that Pickle is an amazing children's book. This is the story of a runaway pickle who has been chased by many different children's foods such as raisins, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich etc. I loved this book when I gave story times at the area schools and at my public library branch over my many years of service. A first choice for children of all ages especially good reading for group story hours.
I do not get the appeal of this book. The illustrations are rough, and not all that great. The story line is absurd and kind of funny, but for some reason the kids want me to read this over and over again. Every time I think it's slipped into oblivion at the back of the bookshelf it comes back out to the front lines again.
I have to go read it now to stop the desperate sobbing at my knees!
Gingerbread man version with a pickle who escapes from the local deli. He runs until a boy runs into him at a corner and wipes him out. The boy considers eating him...what will he do? Great plot, fun characters and illustrations are amazing. Boys and girls love this one and it is always checked out at my school library. Highly recommended Gr. K-5.
what great fun! pickle gets loose from the pickle jar and leads a variety of food on a chase until he runs into a boy...will the boy spare his pickle life? girls giggled and enjoyed from start to finish.
I love this book. I always have. I brought it home for charlie to read in preparation for pickle day at his school. he liked the story but he didn't want to bring it in to work to share either.
This would be a great book to read out loud to students and for them to join chorus style in the common phrase "stop that pickle!" The illustrations are whimsical, and perhaps can lead to students writing a story from the POV of something they had to eat that morning.
Not the best children's book I've read lately. I was really excited about it, so that was a let down. It was cute, and the artwork was nice, but the action and story felt a bit stiff. Oh well. Still an ok read.
I'm not entirely sure why the pickle's food brethren feel the need to hunt down the pickle, who just doesn't want to be eaten. Are they wanting him to suffer the same ill fate of all food? Is this weirdly culty? I don't know. But the book doesn't really deliver on any sort of appeal for me.
A rhyme about a woman going into a deli to get a pickle. The pickle doesn't want to turn into a snack, so he jumps out of the jar and runs away. A variety of food starts to chase after him. Eventually a little boy catches him. Will it be the pickle's demise?
A funny book with creative illustration comparative to many modern simplistic/stylized cartoons. This book is a good resource to use for a compare and contrast with folk tales (gingerbread man).
