The Toltec Teachings #1

Return of the Warriors

Rate this book

First in the Toltec Teachings Series, Return of the Warriors introduces the Warrior's Path and the Toltec Path of Freedom. This is an action-based approach to life, in which individuals are taught to value their own experience more highly than information from others. Theun Mares introduces the basic concepts of this path, as well as the practical techniques, and provides the tools used by warriors in everyday life to build self-belief, self-reliance and self-empowerment - the true foundations for freedom.

Topics include: Your view of the world – how it defines you, how you maintain it and the steps you need to take to break out of it. The power of true knowledge and how this leads to unwavering belief in self and true success. Becoming aware of your social conditioning and how to start freeing yourself from it. The secrets used by warriors on this path to achieve lasting change and freedom. Why your weaknesses are your unrealised potentials and the keys to using them to realise your dreams.

This book opened up a new vista, a possibility of living in a meaningful and honourful way, something I had been looking for all my life, but which always eluded me. In the past I had read the books of Carlos Castaneda, I loved them but the question remained: how does it relate to my daily life. Well, this is the REAL thing: Théun Mares, gives the answers and they are not easy and not glamorous. It is about taking the gap to freedom through learning to meet your challenges impeccably in daily life: work, money, relationships, health etc. No exceptions and escapisms. Very powerful.
This book is no fiction but the real stuff: how to live as a warrior in 2017.
I first encountered the hardcover version in 1997 in the American Bookshop in Amsterdam and read it again and again. I met the author in 2001 at a retreat in Wales. I couldn't handle it: I just was not real enough myself at that time. 8 year later I was ready. I became an appprentice to the warrior's path and started participating on Toltec Legacy: an online teaching facility with a Study and Living Room - the best moderated forum I know - where apprentices meet: http://www.toltec-legacy.com.
Théun Mares died in 2011 but a strong core of apprentices from all over the world meet regularly and work together on projects. It is truly a Path with Heart.
Return of the Warriors is the first in a series of 6 books and now also available as ebook (kindle edition) on Amazon: The Toltec Teachings, Volume 1.
On the internet there is also a lot of guidance freely available. The way to access this guidance is simple: before you type to your search engine any concept that you wish to explore online, just type first the words “Toltec Legacy”.

I was very glad to push my reading of the Toltec writers further and read Return of the Warriors by Theun Mares. He presents a very sober account of his knowledge, what is particularly on my mind about this book is its emphasis on recapitulation, and explanatory notes about the process.
The books about the Toltecs' knowledge are part of my heart and in this book Theun Mares affirms himself as one... and seemingly he is one. The starter of it all was Carlos Castaneda, and so he is often, in the Toltec writers books referred. Read all the books you want, but the Toltecs provide the "weapons" for you to start your journey.

This series demystifies the Toltec tradition by replacing allegory with the practical application of Toltec techniques. That being said, there is a lot of implied knowledge of Toltec terminology which makes this series somewhat inaccessible to anyone that is not familiar with the Carlos Castaneda body of work. Will you still gain useful insights? Absolutely. Will you derive full benefit without first reading Carlos Castaneda? Probably not.
