Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo--commander of the secret organization NERV--to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power...

What the f? Give me back all the tears I shed for Rei's death and Tokyo 03 collapsing (although, the latter is a real tragedy, yes.) Give me back the trauma of having another of my favorite character die before my eyes. But Rei and Dr. Naoko's tragic backstory is just maddening (I mean, yea, no wasted tears actually. But it's still not good playing with other people's feelings, okay. I got a beating heart okay.) Here I thought Naoko was killed by Commander Ikari (I can't recall now why I theorized that. Anyway, he's still the reason she did what she did. Jealousy can take life, that's all.) Also, WHAT THE F—Kaworu and Shinji... so fruity, I can't!! Also, I was wondering before why there are 8 eyes on the Adam's face and just realized it's because there are 8 existing angels attacking Tokyo 03. Now, Ritsuko must be planning something after that SEELE meeting because she just exposed the truth about Rei to Shinji and Katsuragi.
So now we know the truth behind Rei Ayanami. And also learned more about Ritsuko. The secrets are revealed one by one , yet I wish it was done in less confusing way. Having already read Wikipedia article about second impact and angles, I think it is still a bit hard to grasp what really happened.
I am glad Shinji doesn't make friends with that creepy 5th child ( a.k.a last angel) like in the anime. In the manga their relationship is more fleshed out, and they don't magically become friends after Shinji lost his other friends. Shinji's sadness made me tearful, which I believe, is more because of my own stress and because I am too emotional for my own good.
This volume is really "the plot thickens" at it's finest. We learn more about Rei than anywhere else in the series. It almost feels like we've got all our answers.... Almost.
The Story: This game of hot potato only has so many players left to juggle the coming shit storm. Seele is pissed, because who doesn't Gendo piss off? "Surely he sees the significance of Fuyutsuki returning alive...?" says Kiel on pg. 87. And that is? Kaji stated his motives for releasing him: Nerv was the closest entity in proximity to the truth. Are the members of Seele/HIC privy to that and assume Gendo is as well? Or did they want Fuyutsuki to deliver a message: that Gendo should play by their rules or else? Since losing the spear in book 9 and now Tokyo-3 in this one, Seele pins a lot of blame on Gendo, and as such require another sacrifice. Rather than hand over the one "responsible", (a) Rei, Gendo offers Dr. Akagi. The woman he begged to stay after her mother died. (See: pg. 146.) It's another huge turning point for the series. The at-her-all-time-high Rei II, the cat-faced-cat-killer Kaworu and the rent-from-grace Ritsuko shed some beautiful new layers inside this round of NGE. I remember reading and loving this volume a lot back when, too.
Asuka's bio reminds me of a question that was brought up by Shinji last volume. (1) Why is she "made" to attend school? Though it documented in her introduction that she is a college graduate, we never got an answer as to why she goes to First Junior High. For the normal social aspects? Seems good enough to me. By the way, this bitch gets one, small panel in this whole book (pg. 25-5). It's crazy.
Another. (2) Why is it force ejection of the plug never works. What's up with that? See it on pg. 30. It's the first time I'm reporting it, but it's definitely not the first, second or third time it's happened. Major design flaw, guys.
Product placement's also been steady. I remember seeing a Coca-Cola, Asuka with McDonald's and now Evian (a purposefully similar-to-Eva-named product, perhaps), located three times on pg. 79! There's a "Somy" on pg. 100, but I don't think that counts. So (3), is Sadamoto getting some money for this?
Also, between this and returning to Star Trek: Discovery, they got me wanting to log all the science (fiction) terms for a referential resource during re-reads. Like Red Panda Sadamoto's heart-healthy coenzyme Q10! ;p
Fanservice alert! We gotta combat all the gay what's been going on around here, so if you liked nude Rei in book three, just hold on to your hats!
Quote appreciation!
1) I felt the will of the First Child flow inside me. It was lukewarm. Sticky. Heavy. It gave me the creeps. It felt like it was slowly constricting my chest... like I couldn't breathe. So. Was that... love? - Kaworu, pg. 103
2) Guys don't like guys! - Shinji, pg. 105; Well, now, Shin-chan, that's just not true.
3) I didn't need the me that is a woman. I would never be like my mother. - Ritsuko, pg. 145
Art appreciation! This is the most polished Sadamoto's new style has felt. It's been labored over to get clean and hearty lines for the anatomy. In general, the pencils have become too thinned out for my liking. Page 68, panel 3, is like the perfect marriage of the old and new artist. There are also some very cool technical choices made here, particularly involving pgs. 55-64, where, despite the absolutely explosive catastrophe happening, there's no sound effects. It's a classy, stylish choice to leave the pages' virginity, and the cleansing sobriety of it all was not lost on me.
1) The back cover art, also used as the index, also happens to be one of my favorite pieces of NGE art: Asuka is front and center stage. The colors pop. There's some cool fish-eye perspective. The gals are chilling on an old rust bucket I, once again, can't identify but think looks cool, the stuff Sadamoto clearly has the hots for, and the boys are chilling in the back, wearing their matching albeit light and dark gear. Smokin'!
2) I find myself drooling over the mech art more and more. I always respected it, but when I was first introduced to Eva, it was the way the human form was dressed that got me interested. Page 29 is spectacular, giving us a twisted Angel and Eva amalgamation. Then we have Unit-00's animated implosion from panels 53-6, 57-1 and 57-3. And last but not least the graves of the failed prototypes on pg. 157. *chef's kiss*
3) Seeing a serene nighttime GeoFront (pg. 88-1) is almost sick on it's own for what it belies. And then to see (the third) Rei looking out into the darkness, faintly lit by amorphous lanterns, with an almost sinister expression confirms Nerv's shattered facade. (pg. 107)
Moment appreciation!
1) The kiss. This might be the reason volume 10 seems to have the most bowed wear out of them all, and it's definitely another win over the anime. Do I need to explain what this mean to a queer person like me, seeing something like this in a mainstream manga? Yes, Kaworu is giving Shinji resuscitation, but it's also clearly more than that. It's slow, sensual and transforms into something deeper, born from curiosity to understand humans and love. Everyone is blushing and flustered for good reason. I will die on a hill against those that try to say it's just CPR. Hell, even Sadamoto was questionably comfortable with this move, using a thumbs like that. Rude. (pgs. 98-105)
2) We experienced young Shinji in v8, young Asuka in v9 and now young Rei (the first), who, by this point, is irrefutably modelled after Yui. The Akagi family's daaark involvement with Gehirn is revealed, and Ritsuko is an eyewitness to her mother's killing of Rei (by, you guessed it, Gainax's trademarked strangulation method - a first outside of the context of Asuka or an Eva unit). (pgs. 138-144)
3) That's not all folks! Let's kick her while she's down. The beautiful and astute Ritsuko has deteriorated over years of abuse. Finally abandoned by Commander Ikari, humiliated and turned over to Seele for execution, given no priority over Yui's fading carbon-copies (pgs. 123-125). She's a tool like Shinji and anyone else. "[...] I could bear anything... any insult. I didn't care about my body. But... but I didn't want him to think that. [...] I'm such a fool. [...] If you want to kill me do it. I'd be happy for the favor. (pgs. 171-172) The book's closing panel is just utterly tragic.
The Extras: Comparing my entire collection, I discovered another aesthetic difference between the old AEs and the new VMEs. The black letterboxing on the covers that credit the artist/author, concept and publisher is no longer beveled. The only oddity is that my volume 3 has Viz Media and Action in the upper box (and I believe the updated Viz logo on the spine). My copy is the first printing from April '07, two and a half years after the release of volume 9; this was the first time I'd had to wait for Eva just like Japan. Now, I know the cover looks grim, but why does synopsis on the back contain a major spoiler about Rei offing herself? Guys. You were so close. Are you just translating the Japanese blurb? The bios section is at its best, updated with the most recent images and info. It's small consistent changes like these that make me think the team takes pride in their work, but again, I don't know how the original Japanese versions did theirs if at all. The liberal changing of the spines among including frivolous materials, like what they choose for bonuses makes me think Viz has a lot of freedom to package NGE however it wants.
Page 47 has a good example of how to handle formatting for vertical text. Keep it. It's really no big deal, it's just that much more similar to the original and it's much less awkward than turning a book sideways. The glossary is more well-spoken than ever, too. Hiragana FX are for "personal or intimate" purposes, and the two short parallel marks, 点々 (tenten, lit. "dots" - the colloquial form of 濁点, dakuten) are finally explained as sound modifiers. The series has never looked sharper. Maybe the near three year wait was good for fine-tuning all these sleek nuances.
CAAARL!-'s bonus writings are always appreciated. In this one he discusses Viz's history with the series as being the oldest in the world, by publishing an article in their Animerica (launched by women, fyi) that held some now-defunct concept info before anywhere else ran to print. There's much more he talks about like the peculiar translations of the title kanji, this manga's first mention of the four Rebuilds (meant to be released from '07-'08, lol), the name dropping of the evamonkey.com community, and correcting errata from volume 8. Wonderful, fascinating stuff. Bravo, good sir!
Okay... I said it after volume 8, but I've had a good time pushing through some of my two favorite volumes of Evangelion. NOW IT'S TIME TO PLAY A GAME FOR ONCE THIS SUMMER. Happy birthday to me~
If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives. If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.

Ok things begin to turn interesting in this volumen, the truth about Rei, and the other Kid.
After the disastrous results of a cataclysmic event known as the Second Impact, an alien species known only as Angels terrorizes the last remnants of humanity. Young children are raised in military schools and trained to combat these godlike entities by piloting giant biomechanical mechas into battle. The story revolves around the personal struggles of the members of NERV, the shady organization responsible for the creation of these mechas; most notably the cold and calculated leader Gendo Ikari and his chronically depressed son Shinji.
The surface level story of Evangelion is deceptively simple. It appears to be a straightforward apocalypse story about the last survivors of humanity fighting back against an alien race that nearly drove them to extinction, but there’s a lot of depth in the background of the plot. There’s more to the Angels than meets the eye. NERV has a disturbing number of skeletons in its closet. And the few survivors in charge of fighting against the aliens have an abundance of mental scars in desperate need of being healed lest they destroy themselves before the Angels can get to them.
I love the subtle depth of the characters. Shinji appears to be a cold and distant boy with odd tendencies that are almost sociopathic in nature, but he turns out to be an extremely sensitive and anxiety-ridden teen who suffers from a lack of parental guidance and affection. He’s not always likable, but he’s uncomfortably relatable. Asuka appears to be a bratty and spunky girl with all the confidence in the world, but she suffers from a self-destructive inferiority complex caused by past tragedies that causes her to act out in front of adults to make herself appear more mature than she really is while struggling with emotional breakdowns in her private time.
Every character has a facade they put on in front of their peers, only for it to be revealed that they’re hiding a brutal amount of unhealed trauma and emotional baggage that usually causes more damage than the main threat of the story. In fact, the main story is just a part of the background. What makes Evangelion a masterpiece in my eyes is how horrifyingly human the characters are, how painful their struggles are and how disastrous their bad choices end up being.
A very bleak, depressing and terrifying series that tackles nihilistic philosophy and twisted religious allegories in abundance, but there are faint glimmers of hope and lessons to be learned from the catastrophic mistakes made by the mentally and emotionally broken cast.
I enjoyed reading this much more as an adult than I did as a teen!
I LOVE LOVE LOVEE EVANGELION SO SO MUCH!! I really was born to meet this anime!! I love everything about Evangelion, literally everything, this is my all-time favorite. It has so much deep concepts, story, plot, psychological themes, and amazing representation !! Everything is so well-written especially the characters. Shinji, Kaworu, Asuka, Rei, Misato, They are my top characters especially how they are written!! They all have different behaviors, perspectives, backstory that are so interesting. Evangelion made me realize a LOOOOTTT of things about myself and this world. It really did made me reflect on everything. The quotes are so deep and astonishing. Evangelion is extraordinary, incredible, deep, spectacular, I don't have enough words for it! I love it in every way!! I relate to some of the characters as well, I love them so much. I wish I could watch it for the first time again, it really is a phenomenal and amazing experience. Honestly I'd cry again, the rebuilds/movies are as amazing as the anime and the manga! The art and representations are so good like genuinely. It's all so breath-taking! I wish I could watch the movies in the theatre... I want to own every merch they have literally, most of them are also amazing and beautiful. The relationships of every character with eachother, especially Shinji and Kaworu! They reflect alot on the characters.. I feel like you can understand and truly feel it is when you are at a certain point in your life.. Well that's my opinion.. Or! Maybe you have experienced something that made you understand it? I don't know how to put it in words! I love Kaworu and Shinji's relationship and the way it's quite different if you compare it with the manga, anime, and the rebuilds! The way Kaworu tried to make Shinji happy even though he's an angel, and Shinji who never had anyone that truly cares and loved/liked him.. This isn't even all I have to say about them.. I have soososososo muchh to say!! LITERALLY EVANGELION IN GENERAL IS BEAUTIFUL! Did I mention the psychological themes? I will NEVER forget about Evangelion. Evangelion will forever resonate with me, eternally.
(So ungefähr.)
This masterpiece has taken a special spot in my heart. After watching the anime, I thought how about read the novel. So I did it. Since it was soo good that it left an impact on me. I decided to go on and research about Evangelion. This leads me to discover the depressing things author Hideaki Anno had to go through. He mentioned in an interview that Evangelion is a way of expression Hideaki Anno was using to burn down his feelings of depression. I wouldn't say that Shinji Ikari is my favorite protagonist, but I can't help it but feel relatable to him. During this novel as well as the anime it almost feels like I am Shinji, I felt like I was betrayed. My feelings were betrayed. Shinji will always be the most unique protagonist I will ever see, because the protagonist is not the ideal version of himself, as if Evangelion is telling me that Shinji is the person you would never want to be. This is my review of Evangelion as a whole.
There's just so much going on here just behind the curtain, and what spills out into open view in this volume is earth-shattering: Ayanami's , Gendo offering up Ritsuko to SEELE for her flashback sequence to protect Rei, and Ritsuko's strike back at both of them when she reveals Rei's secret to Shinji.
But more than anything else, what fascinates me about this version of the story is Kaworu's attempts to grapple with... humans and what messy, contradictory creatures they are. While Shinji is our nominal protagonist, he's had a really hard time and a number of severe shocks, and I found a lot of dark humor in the way Kaworu's alienness and openness seem to draw a lot out of Shinji that otherwise he would have kept very tightly bottled up.
4.0 stars this volume left an indelible mark on me. it marks a significant point where the narrative undergoes a jarring metamorphosis into the darker realm. with every preceding volume, i question the depths of this series' bleakness, yet it consistently manages to surpass all expectations in its unyielding strangeness. i feel so sorry for Rei, being on the precipice of self-discovery and meeting a tragic fate.
moreover, the "romance" between Kaoru and Shinji is seen so lightly despite its despairing depth. it's an exploration of yearning and loneliness. Kaoru, despite being an 'angel'—an entity typically revered as being superior to humanity—harbors envy for Rei, thereby revealing the irony behind his character. he represents a longing for the very emotions that come naturally to the flawed human existence; to him, these emotions are akin to divinity.
Well good news !! The last volume’s quality seems to have been a one-off, because we are back to the really good shit here.
I mean obviously I was going to like this, because Rei is easily a top 3 character in this series, and this portrayal of her is probably the most interesting that we have gotten in the Manga thus far.
That being said, I still don’t really care for Kaworu here and I don’t LOVE how exposition is handled here at times…
But honestly that exposition problem only really hurts my enjoyment of the manga during the Seele chapters (which tend to be the chapters that have the highest chance of taking me out of the immersion of the volumes as we are spoon fed cryptic messages that have always been the least engaging part of Evangelion).
“People found a G-d. And in their folly, they tried to possess it. And so, retribution was visited upon humankind.”

RATING THIS ONE BC I RLY HAD A GREAT TIME AS A RITSUKO ENJOYER also I think anyone who hates Manga Kaworu is the weakest link that gayboy has just learned what love is and he is making it EVERYONES problem. The kiss scene is really funny actually people treat it like it’s “fucked up” but bro he literally just wanted to help him breathe 🙄 he’s a test tube angel okay give him a couple tries at the time loop to best understand how to Romance Shinji Ikari
The good: -Great revelations. -Gorgeous dialogues. -The plot starts to get some shape and is amazing. -The character of the scientist Ritsuko is very interesting. -Some scenes are drawn very beautifully.
The bad: -The father of Shinji must show his more humane side soon or he will become an unidimensional villain. Right now he is simply evil.
