Stylish, delicate, and consistently edgy, Der Mond collects the color illustrations of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, perhaps the most acclaimed manga and anime artist of all time. The book includes 74 pages of paintings and designs devoted to Neon Genesis Evangelion, plus another 50 pages from The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia--The Secret of Blue Water, Blue Uru, and other works--including Sadamoto's cover to Eric Clapton's 1998 album, Pilgrim.
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (貞本義行) is a Japanese character designer, mangaka, and one of the founding members of the Gainax anime studio.
His notable works include Neon Genesis Evangelion character design and manga. He is also the character designer for the .hack//Games and the Package designer for the .hack//GU games. Also publishes with the doujinshi pen name 45yen.
Der Mond: The Art of Neon Genesis Evangelion is just one of the many books on the popular anime. Many of them are in Japanese. This is one that's translated to English by publisher Viz Media. It's a larger than usual art book, hardcover, 120 pages and reads from right to left.
It collects the art of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (貞本 義行), the Japanese artist who created the characters for Evangelion. The pages are filled with huge beautiful prints. If you collect the manga series, you'll find some pieces familiar because they are the chapter splash pages. Most of the art are character based, and there are also some sketches which I like.
It's not all Evangelion art though. Towards the back there are also illustrations from other projects like games and other anime. The only I recognise is Fatal Fury fighting game. The others are The Wings of Honneamise, Leiqunni Nondelaiko, Nadia of the Mysterious Seas, Aoki Uru and others. There's even an album cover for Eric Clapton.
There isn't any commentary beside the credits for the illustrations.
Nice book for the anime and manga fans of the series.
If you know Neon Genesis Evangelion then you need no introduction to this book - it contains many set pieces of the characters from the Anime series which defined the genre. The book is a joy to read and look at and reminds you of the skill and vision of the artists which to be honest are victims of their own success. After all if they can convey realistic and believable characters, their work blends in to the back ground and you get drawn in to the storyline - therefore their creations are ften over looked. Well this book brings that to the front and it certainly is impressive
Fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion--and who isn't?--might recognize this name as being one of the men responsible for the anime and writer of the ongoing manga adaptation. This oversized book is a collection of various pictures he's done, primarily during the EVA period, though there are a few other pictures added in (including his cover for an Eric Claption album, of all things).
It's nice to see some of these stills in a larger-than-life format, particularly ones that were used for filler pages on the manga. He does really amazing detail work on the art, which you don't get to see as much in the shrunk-for-manga-digest size. There are also character sketch pages for many of the EVA characters, including Shinji and his father.
Perhaps the best thing about this book, though, is for showing to people who tend to dismiss the artwork that goes on in manga and give them a new appreciation for it. That's definitely what I'd do with it.
Sadamoto, in the back of the book, explains where all the various pieces are from. It's a shame there wasn't more about this, the notes are more like one-sentence offhanded comments. He does think this was a stagnant period for him, oddly enough. If only a lot of artists could be so "stagnant!"
This won't take you long to page through, but it's a nice thing to have as a companion piece to the EVA works. I'd definitely buy a copy if I found one. (Library, 07/08)
Wonderful Art book of the series including some really interesting concept art, only wish there had been a bit more info from the artist on the images and his process of designing the art.
God I love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto... I already knew some of the illustrations in this book, since many are printed on photo paper in the omnibus volumes, but some of the beauties I just witnessed were completely new to me. Many pieces with Rei that I've never seen with an unmatched beauty. I stared for minutes. What I loved most were the comments to each illustration in the very end. I love hearing the artist's thoughts on their own pieces or information to the process. Truly amazing. The size of this book is also impressive... I love seeing the art all big and beautiful, it just doesn't fit in my shelf T T I had to angle it a lot in order to make it fit lmao
If you’re a fan of Sadamoto’s style at all, this is a really beautiful collection of his original paintings/artworks. I particularly liked the early renditions of the Eva characters, before they reached their final forms.
Art was fantastic, I just kinda wish the descriptions of each piece were next to the art and a bit more detailed rather than at the back of the book.
Also, the book is titled as the ‘Art of Evangelion’ but it’s more of the ‘Art of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’ since the final third is other art he made for promotions of other series, etc.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my favorite anime’s of all time so I can’t get enough of the characters as well as art style that’s within the series. Being the big fan of the series that I am I decided to get this it only contains art from the show or pictures that aren’t involved in the show yet have the characters and it’s simply beautiful I can’t explain how much I appreciate this. If you’re a big fan of the series I would say it’s really cool to have in your collection.
