The Search To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life—a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescue. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare. Several years ago, she was the only survivor of a serial killer—a madman who stalked and abducted young women, strangled them, and left them buried with a red scarf on their bodies. As authorities were closing in on the Red Scarf Killer, he shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner. On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude she needed to rebuild her life. Yet all that changes on the day Simon Doyle barrels up her drive, desperate for her help. He’s the reluctant owner of an out-of-control puppy, foisted upon him by his mother. Jaws has eaten through Simon’s house, and he’s at his wit’s end. To Fiona, Jaws is nothing she can’t handle. Simon is another matter. A newcomer to Orcas, he’s a rugged and intensely private artist, known for creating exquisite furniture. Simon never wanted a puppy, and he most definitely doesn’t want a woman. Besides, the lanky redhead is not his type. But tell that to the laws of attraction. As Fiona embarks on training Jaws and as Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands.… The Collector As a professional house-sitter and freelance writer, nothing ties Lila Emerson down—not her work, not a home, and definitely not a relationship. The Search was my first e-book when e-readers first came out. Since then, I've revisited the story multiple times. I never tire of the plot or the characters, and I always find something new I missed before. I love the development of the main characters. Fiona learns to trust again after trauma, guilt, and the grief of losing her first love. Simon learns to open up to love rather than be a lone wolf (pun intended). The dogs are the tool for the main characters' growth, and the balance that holds them together. The antagonists are so different, but interdependent, but really oblivious to the people they focus on. The secondary characters like Mai, Sylvia, and James leave the reader wanting to know more. Top all that off with an exciting series of events taking place right from the first chapter and Nora Roberts has an exciting, loving, warm read to start the new year off right.
The second book in this two book collection, The Collector, is totally different from the first book, but just as interesting. The main character Lila, is so self confident on the surface, yet so insecure underneath. Just like the art that is discussed throughout the book, the viewer either sees the surface image, or digs deep for its actual meaning. The reader needs to look deep to see Lila's vulnerability. As to Ashton, it’s not often that the male lead is more in touch with his feelings than the female. He feels deeply but hides it behind a gruff bossiness that only Lila sees through.
The antagonists in this story are so hateful, but I wish they had dealt a little more with their personalities and how they got to be so evil. Unlike in the first book where we really get to know the two serial killers. However, I like how it's fast paced and focused this story is, and how well it flows. I originally thought that an epilogue was needed at the end, but I now see why the author stopped the story where she did.
The Collector 3 stars Read from November 05 to 06, 2014 Format ebook (edit) Review Lila and Ash
It's a quick read ... an adventure story starts with an apparent murder/suicide in Manhattan. It continues with a lost treasure, hired assassins, and an unlikely relationship between a perpetual wanderer and an un-starving artist -- not to mention the best friends (small world) and a very extended complicated family. --------------------------------------
