"Everett held her tightly, aware of the violent beating of his heart. He felt as if he was falling—freefalling through 15,000 feet—without a parachute. It was exciting, thrilling—and deadly. He’d brought Kate up here to protect her, to keep her out of trouble. He’d told himself he owed that much to Keith. Now all he wanted to do was take her down into the cabin and ravage her ’til dawn…"

Freak accident or attempted murder? Kate needs answers to her brother's plane crash, but her quest to unravel the mystery throws her into the turbulent wake of suave pilot/mechanic Everett Larsen. His penetrating gray gaze ignites in her a passion as powerful as a jet stream, but it also sparks a memory...

Drawn to Milwaukee by Keith's cryptic message, Larsen is unprepared for the assault of emotion he feels when he sees Kate--after his wife's death, he is afraid to love again. But when Kate insists on helping out at her brother’s aircraft repair shop and gets too close to the truth, he is even more afraid to lose her.

I write because I can't resist the challenge of taking the intriguing characters and storylines that pop into my head and fleshing them out into compelling manuscripts. I wrote my first melodrama in fifth grade for a Girl Scout Drama badge, not so different really than a romantic suspense novel. My love of characters lead me to pursue theater in college, and then brought me back around to creative writing. I received my BA in English from Columbia College, Missouri with an emphasis in creative writing.

I love writing romantic suspense because it allows me to combine a sexy, passionate love story with a gritty suspense tale—in my opinion, the best of both worlds. It also lets me express my appreciation for the outdoors in the settings which I recreate on the page.

Freefall, my second novel, takes place in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine Forest and beautiful Door County. ICE blue returns to the busy streets of Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan to continue the story of the DeLuca family which began in my award winning first novel, heartbeats. In the third installment of the DeLuca Family, TRUE blue, my characters must take a trip to Montana’s majestic Glacier National Park to solve a twenty-four year old murder.

When I’m not sketching characters or working out plot problems, you might find me on the golf course working on my handicap. I also enjoy traveling around the country seeking out new settings for my novels with my husband and my new puppy, Roxie, who has all the spunk and feistiness of my heroines. Tension, Suspense, Crime, and Mystery

The author has a knack for creating tension and suspense, not just to move the plot along, but to develop heated relationships between each of the characters as well.

The setting for "Free Fall" is a family run general aviation business. Rae knows the business and did a great job with the passages about flying and fixing small planes. Her main character, Kate Reynolds along with her brother Keith's Army buddy Everett Larson, are thrust together when Keith's plane mysteriously crashes.

Kate and Everett develop an attraction for each other and the romantic tension builds throughout the story at the same pace as the suspense surrounding the mystery of Keith's accident. To say more would spoil the fun.

Overall, the story's structure flows well and the writing is smooth. Rae does something that is rare for this genre. In a few of the passages, she presents the body language of her characters through a smooth flow of prose. The reader not only comes to know the characters through dialog, but can easily visualize their interactions.

For those looking to enjoy a good aviation yarn, "Free Fall" is sure to satisfy that itch.

Well of course, I'm going to give it 5 stars, I'm the author! But what do you think? I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I loved writing it! Freefall takes place in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine Forest and in Door County,Wisconsin, one of my favorite places to vacation; but don't let the idyllic setting fool you. Freefall has plenty of sensual romance and intrigue! You can read more about me and my books and follow my blog at www.susanrae.com

Full review can be found here.

The book opens with “the pilot” taking off and soon realising that there’s something not right with his plane. He’s faced with the choice of attempting to right the problem by continuing with his flight – and thus potentially endangering citizens – or returning to the runway in what can only be a crash landing. Following the pilots’ code of ethics, he chooses to put only himself at risk rather than innocent people who just happen to live close by the airport.

We then meet his sister, Kate, who is having to come to terms with the fact that her brother has almost died in an accident involving a flying machine for the second time in his life. The doctors inform her that despite the extent of his injuries he still has brain activity, which is a good sign, but there’s no telling when, or if, he’ll wake up. Kate basically puts her life on hold in order to tend to her brother, but she also wants to help keep his business, an airport, running while he’s unable to keep on top of it himself. As she starts to uncover the events in his life leading up to his accident, though, she also finds herself wondering whether she really knew her brother as well as she thought she did.

At the same time, we’re introduced to Everett Larsen, an army buddy of our beloved coma patient, Keith. Keith had contacted him prior to the accident about something fishy taking place. What’s more, it would appear that Keith’s accident might not have been an accident at all. Everett, now an undercover investigator, is determined to get to the bottom of what happened to his friend, which puts him in Kate’s path. She doesn’t recognise him, though, and he’s happy to present a false persona in order to keep her from learning the truth.

There’s a lot of truth being kept from others in this story, which is usually the way of things in mystery, but Kate and Everett do tend to take it to an extreme. They’re both damaged individuals with previous relationships that ended in emotional turmoil. As such, they’re still working past their demons, but in each other they find a way of coming to terms with what happened – the past is the past and both realise that they need to turn a new page and look to the future instead.

I enjoyed the budding relationship between these two characters as well as the glimpse into life around a small airport. With Schiphol being one of the busiest airports in Europe, my experience is obviously very different, though I have visited some smaller ones in passing (like the “field” in the photo above), which seem much more relaxed and very quaint! In fact, the little views into the life running an airport like this were the highlight of the story.

My only real gripe with the story was that the truth behind what happened to Keith was fairly transparent. As soon as any new information was imparted to the characters, even if it was misleading, it was possible for the reader to put the pieces together much faster than the story was keeping up with. It was just too easy to unravel the mystery and I could see most of the twists and turns coming from the moment they were introduced.

Despite this, I enjoyed the read!

Kate's worst fears come to light when she hears about her brother Keith's accident. Her parents died from the same fate. An airplane crash took them and now Keith is in a coma.

Kate inundates herself into Keith's life and business to keep his life on track while he's laid out. While in the process of helping him with his accounting program she discovers somethings a miss. She goes to JT her brothers partner and he brushes her off like its not a big deal. Then the next day the problem is magically resolved. This happens on numerous occasions and things get fishier with each incident. What is JT up to?

Everette has known Keith a long time. In fact the guy saved his life while they were in the service. Now with this accident he feels like he can somehow repay him.

Kate and Everette might have Keith in common but they have never met. They do for the first time at the hospital. When Kate lays eyes on him she feels as though she knows him from somewhere.
Who is Everette Larson?
What is he doing there?
What does he want? And what does he know? All gets revealed in due time.

Kate and Everette team up and soon they are fighting for their lives. There's so much more to the accident and they are going to get to the bottom of it.

This is a first for me from Ms Rae. She does a great job unraveling who done it and why. The story was somewhat predictable but overall it was a good read.

Well, I was proven wrong again. I began this book with the idea that it would not be a big deal, and I may just only like it minimally. The story was good enough, but it wasn't going to be anything truly spectacular. Please notice that I write all that in the past tense. Why? Read on!

This was a fantastic mystery with so many twists and turns that I honestly lost count! I thought I might have it figured out, and just about that time, the author threw in another shocker. I was glad to discover that some of my assumptions were right, but I sometimes found that I was second-guessing myself. I am glad to say that this mystery resolved itself in a very appropriate way, and I sincerely thank the author for that.

From the beginning, I honestly was drawn into the story. I enjoyed Kate, and who could resist Keith and Everett? The action was virtually non-stop. I don't recall there ever being a dull moment. For a short book, it surely packs a mean punch.

The only issues I had with the book was some mild profanity and some mild bedroom scenes. But those issues truly did not interfere with my enjoyment of the book. And for the hopeless romantics, this will appeal to you as well. If you like a good mystery/suspense with a little bit of romance, this is for you!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

What a perfect book to read in the summer! Romantic and suspenseful, freefall is a story about a woman whose brother is now in a coma after surviving a terrible plane accident. Or was it an accident?

Kate puts her own life on hold as she rushes to her brother’s bedside. There she find her brother had a fiancée she never knew about and starts to uncovering things that make her wonder about his accident. Unknown to her DEA agent Everett Larson is also looking into the crash. Keith’s former army buddy had received a message from him just before the accident took place.

I truly enjoyed reading freefall by Susan Rae. The characters and the plot made for a nice, fast read. The romance was perfect and the suspense wasn’t to dark or scary.

Can Kate solve the mystery of Keith’s plane crash before she has an “accident” of her own?

After losing her job and going through a tough divorce, Kate is just beginning to put the pieces of her life back together and has even started her own business. Her brother’s plane crash throws Kate’s life back into chaos. When she learns her brother needs her, Kate braves her fear of flying and immediately heads out to Wisconsin to be at his bedside. I admire Kate’s strength and stamina when faced with the severity of her brother’s injuries and the fact that he’s in a coma. She literally puts her life on hold and does whatever it takes to remain at his side. When it becomes apparent that Keith’s crash wasn’t an accident, Kate is determined to find out why.

Kate is a well rounded, likable character. She’s an intelligent, strong, and stubborn woman who isn’t about to let anyone push her around. Kate tends to want to do things her way, so when Everett pushes his way into her life, Kate grudgingly accepts his help. Kate and Everett have great chemistry, and it isn’t long before the sparks start to fly and culminate into some very well written love scenes. However, there are a lot of trust issues between Kate and Everett. They both profess to be falling in love with each other, yet their actions sometimes tell a very different story. I was disturbed at how often they withheld vital information from each other. Kate and Everett both expected trust from the other, and yet both weren’t willing to give trust in return. Their dishonesty gets them into several scrapes that could have easily been avoided had they been upfront with each other.

I think that the mystery of Keith’s plane crash was too easy to solve, and I was able to figure out who the culprit was very early on in the story. Consequently, I found it frustrating to watch Kate try and put the pieces together. My main suspect’s behavior was so obvious. He had a convenient answer for every question Kate threw at him and that should have been a huge red flag for Kate. Despite this issue, I will say that there were a couple of characters who did manage to surprise me in the end. Also, the suspense regarding when and if Keith would wake up from his coma is very well done. I couldn’t wait to find out just how much Keith knew about his “accident.”

There are many attempts to tarnish Keith’s good reputation throughout the story. While Kate says she doesn’t believe the accusations, she actually begins to doubt her brother’s character. I was very surprised and saddened at how quickly Kate began to think the worst about her brother because I got the impression they had a fairly close relationship. I found it hard to believe that she’d easily swallow horrible stories about Keith, especially given the questionable source of those stories.

Overall, I enjoyed reading freefall. I recommend it to anyone craving an aviation themed suspense steeped in romance.

3.5 stars. What caused the plane crash that leaves Kate Reynolds' brother Keith in a coma? Was it an accident? Or was it sabotage? Find out in freefall, an intriguing mystery by author Susan Rae.

freefall is an interesting mystery with a bit of a romantic angle. While helping keep her brother's business running while Keith is in a coma, Kate Reynolds discovers a few inconsistencies in his business and personal life. Equally suspicious of the cause of the accident, ex army buddy Everett Larsen is determined to find out what happened to Keith. With a few misgivings, Kate reluctantly teams up with Everett to uncover the truth.

Kate and Everett are well developed and likable characters. However, I was surprised that Kate would so easily believe the worst about her brother. Kate and Everett find it difficult to trust one another in spite of their growing feelings. They continually keep important information from each another and Kate's lack of trust in Everett puts them in harm's way.

Despite the fact that some of the characters' thoughts and dialogue are a little dated and unnatural sounding, freefall is a fairly well written novel. The plot is well-conceived but it is fairly easy to piece together the mystery. However Susan Rae does an excellent job at throwing in a few unexpected twists and turns.

All in all, an entertaining novel with a pretty steamy romance, freefall is an easy to read novel that fans of romantic suspense will enjoy.

Freefall by Susan Rae is a contemporary romance novel with a good storyline, great characters and a mysterious accident that might not be an accident at all.

Kate Reynolds gets the message that her brother Keith was in a plane accident and rushes to his bedside. Her world turns upside down when she hears that he is in a coma and the doctors are not sure how long this is going to be. Then she discovers her brother has a fiancée she never heard about and strange things are happening at Keith’s business. In order to save Keith’s business she will do anything in her power to find out the truth.

Everett “Spike” Larsen is an old army buddy of Keith and a DEA agent. He has been contacted by Keith just before the accident but never heard about what. So Everett goes undercover to find out the truth about Keith’s accident because he is convinced that it wasn’t an accident at all. Meeting Keith’s sister Kate will complicate things because she lights up the candle inside him he thought was burned out long ago.

That Kate and Everett keep a lot of secrets from each other isn’t a good thing to start a new relationship with, but luckily those two characters are very forgiving towards each other. In the end they both do this to keep the other save and to find the truth about Keith’s accident.

Susan Rae has written a great novel where two people with damaged relationship in the past are able to find happiness again. This book has great characters, a good storyline and is very easy to read. I truly enjoyed reading this.

I felt this book had a rough start just with the way that it was bringing things together. However, the story immediately took off and I was hooked. I chose to read this book because I love a good romantic suspense. This book had both the suspense and romance. I definitely could compare this to a Sandra Brown type book.

After the story took off, this book was a page turner and did not let me down. I also loved that the story continued to the end and that there wasn’t any extra “filler” at the end. When the mystery is solved and the romance finalized, it was over. I enjoy that in a book. Unless of course, there may be another in the “series”.

I enjoyed all of the characters. Kate obviously was dealing with a lot as far as her brother and then remembering past events. She was a little hesitant to the romance, but I adored how Larsen was able to handle her. Larsen was a tough man and proved to be her hero. Kate being a strong woman, Larsen knew he couldn’t smother her, but was able to prove he had something to give. J.T. just gave me the creeps, even in the beginning. Wow!

I definitely recommend this book to all lovers of romantic suspense. The mystery plot is something new to me. I have not read it in other romantic suspense books. I liked the newness of that whole idea.

I would give this book 4 stars as it got me hooked and kept me reading to the end.

Okay I admit the title of this book said “Read Me” when I looked at it. I don’t know why but it just kept nagging me. I was a little slow in starting this book. After I read the first chapter I wonder what took me so long to start.

Kate is a very likeable character. She is super with computers and has her own consulting business. She is divorced from an officer of the law and just trying to live her life.

Everett comes off as a tough guy, someone that might give you the impression that his actually job might not be legal.

There is no much I did not like about this book. The only problem I had was my working 14 hour shifts and not able to read it fast enough. I love how the author put a phobia in for Kate. It made her character seem more real. I also liked how the author had a military career in Everett’s past.

If you are looking for a read with some romance, crime and a mystery to solve, then check out this new book from Susan Rae, She has wrapped everything up in a great read.

Thanks for the wonderful read Susan.

I need the ability to add 1/2 a star as I would say it was a 3.5 but not high enough for the 4th star. Also before I begin my review I must warn that this book should be read by mature audience as some of the scenes described can get very steamy.

I found the characters to be very well defined and unique in each their own way. Some characters would even surprise you. The bad guy isn't hard to figure out but that doesn't stop you from reading the rest of the story as you want to throw both Kate and Everett in a room and lock the door until they admit everything they hide from one another which isn't just feelings.

A fairly easy read and enjoyable. A great addition to any mystery, suspense readers collection.

This book had me crying, angry, and happy at times. I was an emotional wreck in certain parts of the book, but that’s because I’m a big sap when it comes to happy endings and of course parts that make me cry no matter what. I recommend this book to mystery and suspense readers out there. You’ll enjoy unraveling the mystery with the characters, just like I did. This was an exciting story, and it was my first story that involved airplanes. May I say…I have a fear of small planes, but maybe I can get over my fears eventually.

This was a mystery romance read and I truthfully enjoyed the book very much. Character development was spot on as was the pace of the writing and action. I pretty much had the villain picked out before the halfway mark, but there were other characters who threw in a surprise of their own along the way. Somewhat typical of romance novels, I wanted to shake some sense into Kate Reynolds and Everett Larson for not being honest with each other and keeping pertinent information to themselves. That didn't stop their animal magnetism for one another . Definitely an adult read as the physical aspect of a couple scenes was very steamy and sizzled my socks off!
